I'm not understanding the mechanics, I finished Nightmare at 50, was using a Rare 2-hand Bow at 186 dps, went to the Auction House to see if I can find something stronger, and found a blue at 348 dps, that was a huge dps jump, so I got it.
But now I'm in Hell and I've just entered Act II, I've seen many Ranged weapon drops (2handers), but never a piece, magic or rare higher than maybe 240 dps or so, and these items are levels 53 and 54, my question is, how is it possible, than on the AH seen like 20 pages of bows, at only level 51 with over 100 more dps than what I'm seeing at even higher levels?

Maybe you should check other people that posted this question, there's many answers. Blizzard clearly said that the RMAH will be the main focus of D3. It's normal if your gear don't drop, find other classes' gear, sell it and buy your own. That's how it works
Thats not a problem, I just want to know why its such a huge differential if the items are the same level. When you say your gear, or class gear normally you are talking about stats you need/want on each item for your specific class.
My question is a basic as, if there are these weapons for level 51 toons with 340 dps, why is it that none that I've found at 51 to 54 come close to that?
There has to be a place, difficulty level or something making this huge difference in drop quality at the same level.
Anyone understand this, or can explain this to me, damage doesn't gradually rise with the level of the gear, I know stats are random but the damage is that largely random as well?
For a top-notch rare weapon, you need 4 things to roll in your favour. The item level itself, the base damage, a damage-increasing affix (e.g. 50-120 poison damage), and (ideally) a decent amount of your class' primary state. The chances of all four appearing on a weapon you actually care about is, obviously, rather low.

- base damage
- base attack speed
- bonus damage
- bonus attack speed
- primary attribute
- socket
All 6 of these will make an item top-notch and leagues above other similarly levelled items. Since some of these things mean huge number changes, you may have a 100dps and a 1000dps item of the same level (no accuracy in those numbers, just saying the potential RNG range is massive).

Thanks Mr. Duck, that was what I wanted to know, I used to WoW, so if an item is a certain level, other items of the same level normally match, that's what threw me off.
