I realize the game is not endorsing addons or mods. However this one will probably happen reguardless. So basically I'm tired of all my friends saying "man I pull sick damage". I just wish I could be like "oh ya?" and whip out epic meters showing locust swarm/haunt dps lol
a dps tool would never accurately display the effectiveness of someone's build or gameplay
there are too many things in d3 that are important which are not damage
I completely 100% disagree. You can measure the effectiveness of the dps of the build. Yes there are other important factors but those can not be measured by a dps counter. For example I would love to know how much dps my zombie dogs put out compared to my gargantuian.
To be honest I am not sure I want to know my DPS or even a min/max strategy based on builds. But then again I did find the little checkmark that allows you to see damage done on mobs.
It seems to me, albeit I only have gotten to lvl 24, that the real trick is effect use of CC. Some mobs have boatloads of health comparitively speaking to damage done by characters and the only way to effectively beat them is to use slows, kiting, and CDs effectively. AKA if you do not have the CCs ready even with big burst damage you will get overwhelmed.
I think that the lack of DPS meters will be due to a limitation caused by damage not being reported in chat. It's much easier to parse text than do image processing for data collection.
I don't think it needs to be that complicated. Maybe in normal and nightmare will your overall damage matter that much, but after that what will matter most is your ability to survive. You're not going to be able to dish a lot of DPS if your resources are going to your defensive skills, mobility and controlling effects. Not that it would be 100% useless of course, but I don't really think it would be that much help. You're going to know pretty easily whether or not your can succeed in defeating the bosses and mobs of a difficulty.
Wow your attitude is just dumb... He is not comparing D3 to WoW anywhere, he is talking about a usefull tool and you should shut up a go play with the rest of the kids. You can't read bro so at least don't point it out...

This
DPS = What I need to know for a boss fight
Diablo Series = mainly random mobs and battles that last less than a minute; therefore DPS is irrelevant.
Damage meters cannot anticipate random monster situations in game that doesn't really have any traditional rotations.
As for a comparison between dogs and gargantuan it's obvious that dogs do less, you can perform math or even experiment on a predictable set of monsters but nitpicking this much is a waste of time at this point.
There are a few threads on DPS meters, I recommending reading them.

Playing Diablo since 97. I know nothing and having nothing good to say, I be a troll.

I've been playing a while, have 2 characters in Nightmare, and I have to entirely disagree. I don't care about my damage on boss fights - that's super easy to maximize. I want to know my damage the rest of the time. I want to know if using armor or damage boosters is going to be more effective without having to take hours to run through, exit, restart a quest, run through, exit, restart a quest, repeat... EG: As a wizard it would be beneficial to know if a high-intelligence shield is worthwhile for the defense or if I should just go with the magic source and a bit extra vitality. This would take at least an hour to figure out in the current game since multiple different ability and rune options are also available. However with a dps meter it would take at most an hour and only one quest restart (depending on your area, I'm thinking Desolate Sands and the like).
I also know that Blizzard supports a lot of the addons for WoW so I don't see why they would actively disallow an addon for D3 as long as it doesn't actually modify the gameplay. By the way, we're not comparing WoW and D3. We're just taking an idea that we have seen in WoW that we know 1 - works, 2 - adds to the game for those who want it, and 3 - is possible in a Blizzard MMORPG.
Now lastly, and address to the haters:
If you don't want to see it in the game, don't use it. If you get bothered by people asking for it, don't play with them (I'm pretty sure you can even IGNORE people). If these people are your friends, talk to them about your distaste for ____ like an adult OR just find new friends. There are MILLIONS of people playing this game; to say "I find people who want this annoying and so it shouldn't be allowed" is like going to a restaurant and saying "I don't like fish, you shouldn't serve it."
If you need something in D3 to hate on, hate on the Gold/Gear/Whatever sellers/spammers. Hate on the fact that you are now automatically joined to General chat upon login so that you get those spams if you happen to forget to go and click "Leave Channel." Seriously folks, there are plenty of problems out there to complain about. Stop complaining about something that doesn't even exist (yet).
EDIT: "(and a dummy, I loved that idea, even if I have to find a way to build it myself using the BS and/or JC)" removed. It was an idea from a forum thread on the D3 site itself and thus the reference made no sense.
Only thing I would like in Diablo 3, is not only to see my DPS (as it is in the in-game stat screen), but also to see my damage range per hit (ya know..... XXXXXX - YYYYYY damage).
Otherwise, I'm good with no recount-like feature. It isn't needed.
I don't agree, you can judge how much damage you're already doing would be easier just for them to put a target dummy in each town you can bash on to get a "dps" number over it's head instead.
Would rather they fix buff/debuffs showing up properly than add support for addons =\, may have worked for wow but they're not needed for D3. It would just open the floodgates for more tweaks and fixes then more intense addons which gather data about drop rates, AH prices etc etc.
Does anybody know of any?
is.
not.
wow.
stop comparing it!
want recount to FIFA 2012 as well? <.<

Agreed. Apples and oranges.
You can easily check effectiveness of build by simply killing same HP mobs with different build.
Get to Inferno.
If you can kill shit and find loot, it works.
