I'll see you back here in 15 years when diablo 4 comes out and you are complaining about how its not anywhere nearly as good as D3 was. Funny thing nostalgia.
I'm really enjoying it and that game is well worth it but in terms of comparison to D2 I don't like how guided D3 is. It just feels to easy.
Well, it seems like, you know how in D2, pretty much all of Act 1 was faceroll? Well, its like D3 Normal difficulty is like that, but you get Inferno in addition to the other 2 difficulties.
So yeah, Normal feels "guided", I can see that, but after normal...... its like having a playground 5x the size of D2. (the areas are huge, with crazy random events, and bananas champ packs!)
So in Nightmare and beyond are the areas bigger and more random?
Only thing I wish they would have brought to D3 was runewords with +skills from other classes. That alone is what made D2 so great IMO. So many different character builds from other characters skills from items. Otherwise D3 is awesome.

I dont want runewords to be back personally, they were just either useless or amazingly ahead of everything else. Also, the whole finding magical and rare artifacts falls flat on its face when what you really really want is a WHITE 4 socketed piece.
The oskill thing was pretty interesting, but it may be nice to have around, but only on a select few legendaries. And they need to keep features for expansions

RUNEWORDS SUCKED BALLS! Once they came out it made gems worthless, and it all became about enigma. Which what crap to begin with because no other class should have had teleport.
As far as D2 being better than D3. D3 has fixed just about every single problem I had with D2. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT. The fact that I look at the clock when I start, and again when I take a break, and two to three hours have passed. That is the mark of a good game. The story is not only better, but told in a way that I think more video games should adopt. You just need to get off the skill point teet.
The only thing left that would make the game perfect would be to end this online only bullshit!
So far, Diablo 3 has been pretty fun for a basic RPG game, but it does not compare to Diablo 2 in its glory years.
It was definitely over-hyped.
Blows D2 out of the water.
Actually, out of universe, not even in the same league.
Etc....
I completely agree, D3 is fucking awesome. D2 was awesome because there was nothing like it when it came out, and we were a lot younger. Make a list of every aspect of D2 to D3 and you'll realize very rapidly how much better D3 is.
The mere fact that I dont have to hover over mobs to insure I actually get loot makes it better than D2. Keep in mind that is just a small yet convenient plus to the game, there a many more larger things that make it AWESOME
Sigh.. i really thought of all places, the indeviduals here would be more clear headed about Diablo 3....
Im sorry but the i just simply CANNOT agree more with the OP... i feel he simply is unable to describe the dissatisfaction he feels from the game....
As a game its great... as the next installment to the diablo series, it feels like a missed opprotunity.
First off, the atmosphere that the game delivers is nothing like both its predecessors, now its important to know that this has nothing to do with graphical fidelity and speaks very loud....
Diablo 3s visuals are incredibly vibrant, there is no claustrophobic feeling the player gets when traversing any of the many dungeons in the game. This is especially apparent in the cathedral. Lets take a quick look, again the argument can only exist when people are able to distinguish the difference people artistic approach and graphical design..
to
As if any visual issues matter though, lets go down the list
-Mini map with vibrant blips and icons to guide the player from point a to point b
-Large yellow exclamation marks signifying an available quest
-scrolling combat text on screen, including white, bright green, and yellow text as well as notifications of debuffs
-companions constantly spitting out zainy one liners, and just all around border line goofy voice work on alot of the side banter and lore logs... granted some of the voice style is ok, and i am not saying the actors themselves are poor... it just feels like dialogue you wouldnt expect in a diablo game...
diablo 3 seriously lacks macabre, and that is something that is inherently permanent.
and the absence of Matt Uelmen, while most likely an internal issue, is simply blow to fierce to diablo 3.
The majority of diablo 3s OST is spent either being incredibly passive, with an over use of ambiance and choir.
or its spent trying desperately to emulate Uelmens unique style, and missing the mark very consistently throughout.
again nearly the entire ost lacks that deep exotic / macabre feeling the previous 2 games provided with excellent success
or
it simply doesnt compare
Now im not saying the compositions in diablo 3 are by any means bad, its just that ulemens work on the first 2 games is simply to strong of a staple to the series
Its very apparent what demographic diablo 3 was/is geared toward, and by all rights it makes perfect sense...
It is a well polished game with tight controls fluid combat, great animations on abilites and spells but perhaps a bit too structured for its own good, at least in the earlier parts of the game. None can argue that, it has all the bells and whistles of a blizzard product.....
But it feels quite off, be it the wow engine, the ability to zoom into your character, the way inventory is now handled, the questing structure and the overly guided mini map leading you in the right direction almost always. Or maybe its the templar constantly reminding you that the carrion bat you just slayed is "a worthy opponent!" or maybe its simply the obnoxious white flashes that flicker all over the screen when your attacking your target, like some old school arcade beat em up, as if to make sure you know your hitting your mark..
Im still trudging through the game with an open mind but there is a constant feeling that so much could have been executed differently had they prioritized on what made the predecessors so iconic and enthralling and less on World of warcraft styled structured gameplay and what essentially should have been rated teen instead of Mature.

I've been playing D2 while waiting for D3 to be released. I think it feels very much like playing D2 with more options and sharper controls.

I grew up gaming without internet forums. The entire phenomenon of being upset with a game developer makes no sense to me. No sense. I cannot imagine spending my time and energy being upset about something I choose to do for recreation.
Diablo 3 feels like Dungeon Siege 2 but with more blood, and darker tones.
I actually thought there were similarities, too! And I loved DS2 DS3 was a huge disappointment to me.
As for Diablo 3, it's amazing. It fixed and improved so much from D2, while keeping and expanding upon most of the things I loved about it. I do wish there was a *little* less chatting and story going on at times, but I am definitely thrilled with the game and will be playing for a very long time to come.
I am glad overpowered rune words are gone, too. And the individual loot drops was one of the best things they could have done imo. So much less stress playing multi now. And it's fair.

Keep in mind runes came out in the expansion so that's not a proper comparison. Compare D2 classic to D3 "classic" anything in the future can happen but I'm enjoying this game a lot. The feel is definitely different but I already knew this in Beta, considering D3 was temporarily put on the shelf and a entirely new team worked on it I'm quite satisfied with the results; unfortunately with the Activision merger we all knew this game would aimed to larger gamer demographic, hence less morbid, but in all fairness D2 was lacking in that department as well.

Playing Diablo since 97. I know nothing and having nothing good to say, I be a troll.

everything about this post is tragically sad to have read..
Gameplay is much more improved.
