Followers
Followers are NPC's that will follow your character around, aiding in your attack against the demons of Hell. There are three different Followers, each with their own unique way of helping you.
There are three Followers; the Templar, Enchantress, and Scoundrel.
The Templar is focused around close combat with tanking and healing abilities.
The Enchantress is focused around ranged magic abilities and buffs.
The Scoundrel is focused around ranged bow physical attacks, disabling attacks and attack boosts.
You may only have one Follower at a time.
Even when not being used, the Followers will level up to a close rate as your character.
Followers cannot be used in multiplayer games.
Followers will automatically resurrect a few seconds after dying in battle.
Followers can be switched out at any time in town.
Followers will be an integral part of the story, each adding their own dialogue.
Stats and Equipment
The Templar requires Strength to increase his damage.
The Scoundrel requires Dexterity to increase his damage.
The Enchantress requires Intelligence to increase her damage.
Much like normal classes Strength increases all Followers' Armor, Dexterity increases their Dodge, Intelligence increases their Physical and Elemental resistance and Vitality increases their Health.
Followers receive 2.5 times more Vitality per Vitality point.
You can respecialize (Respec) your Followers at any time, for free.
Followers are able to equip weapons, amulets, 2 rings and a unique item for each of them.
Anyone else notice that the followers have 3 skills in each skill tier in the videos but only 2 in the calculators we have access to? Anyone know if there will be 3 or 2 at launch?
Can we expect the followers to really make a difference? Not sure if i remember correctly but aren't they too weak to make a difference past normal mode? Is a templar really gonna get mobs off of you and survive for a while in later difficulties?

i read somewhere as a followup to that they decided to make them viable, even in inferno apparently.
edit from diablo wiki:
Followers are only usable in single player games; they return to town and will not assist you when playing with other players. While the initial plan was for Followers to only be usable through Normal difficulty, fan feedback influenced the developers to revise the system to make Followers viable companions[1] throughout Nightmare, Hell, and Inferno difficulty.
I really cannot see them being viable past NM. But who knows....if the scaling is worked out then just maybe they will. If anything, it gives Diablo something else to swing at.
And seriously, had they made these classes and not simply followers they would be amazing.
I absolutely adored the templar in beta. For normal I think I'll just pick whichever follower I like best, but for the record my nerd senses are pointing towards the templar, since it is voiced by Malcolm from Enterprise.
Since followers require no input to revive they will always have some use while solo. I'll be playing a Wizard and I plan on sticking with the Enchantress mostly and giving her my hand-me-downs in gear, and even if she dies in one hit in Inferno her abilities will be extremely useful for control when she does happen to be up and about. Forceful Push for some AOE knockback, Powered Armor for a little extra armor and some attacker slow, Disorient, Mass Control. At the very least she's good for a nice AOE CC every 30 seconds.
