I was wondering if anyone could impart some knowledge as to the different types of playstyles a WD is known to have. I know there are many but a classification of types would be a huge help (ex:summoner, melee).
I am a huge fan of trap type characters similar to what the assasin looks like in D2 and was wondering what you guys felt was the closet thing? I know that the DH has traps but I rarely find anyone really using them, the Witch Doctor even seems more trap based.
If anyone knows what character seems to best fit that build please let me know.
feel free to drop in some builds if you want to show something specific.
Kinda sorta, The DH definitely has the variety of potential traps though the WD has a handful of AoE crowd controllers and debuffs. The WD is potentially more closely involved in the battle since a few of it's skills and passives require close proximity now and again.
The DH has got the Sentry, Spike Traps, and Caltrops as well as a handful of delayed detonation skills which are trappish like the grenades and bola which lend well to good targeting and allow for more defensive play. Dont forget the five runes per, there's definitely room for a trapper type. Inferno viability is debatable, but I wont go there yet.
i like to classify skills in teh following categories.
Fire and forget: most spells that are Auto aim and/or a duration (DOTs,)
Summons, Zombie dog, gargantua and spider queen?
Single target:
Multitarget: Diffrent then AOE acctualy
Area effects:
Buffs:
Crowd controll: including slows
Healing: health and mana
Sure some skills fall into multible categories. but it does not
I tend to build my build mostly of fire and forget spell, mostly cos i loved the trapsassin in D2, and cos im to lazy to aim properly most of the time

EU Season Achievement Ladder: Season 1 : #773, 7150/7880 | S2 : #742, 5970/8280 | S3 : #1000+, 810/980 | S4 #? 0/? |
- Fire Bomb w/ Pyrogeist
- Locust Swarm w/ Pestillence
- Spirit Barrage w/ Manitou
- Fetish Army w/ ANY
- Zombie Dogs w/ ANY
- Gargantuan w/ ANY
these are all no skill abilities... closest you'll get to traps on a WD
I dont think I understand how persistent summons, or turrets (oh, i get it, I called the sentry a trap) are traps.. Does this make the Sorc's Hydra a trap? j/k
Where as the spike"TRAP", damaging caltrops, and sentry like I mentioned, could make a really nasty combo for a mob to unsuspectingly walk into and spring while you're also pummeling from a distance. Much improved dps over raw pummeling and marked for death makes that that much better.
By "traps" I was referring to spells you cast and let to their own affairs... like the D2 traps were... but I agree, the DH has more what he is looking for.

Edit:
I suspect the answer is yes.
