obviously, you will not get too many drops in the beginning. Most of your "high end" gears will be from the smith. To upgrade the smith, you need gold. If the upgrade are exponential, starting from 2k (5 times I believe), by level 10, you need a million gold for each upgrade, that's 5 millions gold. Where are you going to get that much gold without fighting mobs?
I just wanted to point out, It will take 593,000 gold to completely upgrade the blacksmith.
If you ignore the 50x Pages of Blacksmithing 50x Tome of Blacksmithing and 35x Tome of Secrets this is true yes.
Last I heard, they decided on gold being the only requirement to lvl artisans, not any sort of drops. Or maybe they changed the minds again?
May be true, but game guide says otherwise. And I'm pretty sure if it's "Gold Only" they would raise the costs too. Current ones seem pretty low
According to the page you require some regiments in order to progress, so it's not gold only. However, finding these 'pages' or 'tomes' might yet prove to be the most difficult part.
I remember they said somewhere that the artisans will stay unlocked for each new character created, so I assume it would be difficult to unlock all of them in one game? Perhaps you get some of the regiments from quests or whatnot - lowering the drop rate.
I'll look this up a bit later when I'm more awake.
Its gold only to get it to lvl 4 which is the max for normal difficulty.. nightmare uses gold and pages of training, hell uses gold and tome of blacksmithing, and inferno uses gold and tome of secrets.
Another thing is, what about upgrading the jeweler, if your interested in gems in Inferno, though I think it might be important to ensure your survival. And your forgetting craft costs, which can range from 40k to even over a 100k per item, and then you'll need to keep crafting to get the stats you want. I'm hoping gold will be very scarce, so it'll at least have value, unlike D2.
im not going to try and craft the perfect gear for my first playthrough, or even try for high rolls. just craft a couple of each at the most, or even just one of each to get some decent gear so the first playthrough wont be impossible. ill be stacking pure damage and xp gear from normal through nightmare then switch to defensive stats from hell onward. obviously if some gear rolls all crap/useless stats id have to keep crafting.
(yea yea bla bla "omfg if u think u wont need defensive gear in nightmare your high", please... you didnt need it in D2 u wont need it in D3, overestimating hell and inferno is one thing but nightmare is just "normal mode" while normal is "easy mode")

Yeah, I don't know. I'm really hoping D3 will be more challenging than D2. The only trying moments in D2 was when you encountered an monster that's immune to your main damage source, but that was just stupid.
I also hope they make it a bit tougher than you suggested with gear and crafting. If you can breeze your way through it, then what's the point. I agree that Normal is easy and Nightmare is where the game starts, but even then I hope that Nightmare has some challenges and Hell has some very tough battles.
I know, right? The journey is supposed to be the reward, not so much the destination. And you will only experience Diablo 3 for the first time only once, with consecutive playthroughs you'll get used to things and the experience will become jaded, so why rush through your first playthrough? What's the point of getting the game over as fast as possible without actually slowing down, seeing the map, listening to every conversation, enjoying the story, playing around with crafting a lot? People pay for the game, so they may as well enjoy the entire experience.

i think the main reason people are getting so upset with me how im "boasting" about beating the game within a couple weeks is because they think im saying i will do so easily or "breeze" through it. im expecting it to be one of the toughest games ill ever play and be playing 8-14 hours a day powering through being very careful and using all my skill so by no means will it be easy or a breeze once i hit hell.

LoL, this guy again. Random Pro Internet Gamer #34587239, please tell us again how your going to drop inferno by June 1st 12:00 am. ... Or are you going to say that was just a troll when you miss the deadline?
- You start with 0 gear
- As you progress through the story, Acts become shorter and shorter (just like in Diablo 2)
- Levels are randomized
- Areas are bigger as you progress
- Diablo 3 will be harder than Diablo 2
My estimates are as follow:
- Beta content: ~ 30 min
- Act 1: ~2h
- Act 2: ~2h 30min
- Act 3: ~2h 30min
- Act 4: ~2h
- Normal: ~9h
- Nightmare: ~20h
- Hell: ~40h
In all ~70h for 3 normal difficulties
I would be surprised to see anything below 50h for the world first

decent estimates for hours. although i know the world first will be done in less because it will be a group of 4 very skilled players feeding eachother gear and gold and most likely upgrading just 1 of their blacksmiths/jewler to make gear for everyone.

I'm pretty sure this will be the expensive part though.
I didn't call you intelectually challenged. Perhaps I should have?
:Thumbs Up: Well, you have all the time in the world, so go ahead.
Like I said, done arguing.
