I can't recall if this was ever touched upon, but is it necessary to complete normal before nightmare can be played? I realize that normal difficulty is Blizzard's way of introducing players to the game, but I was just wondering if later difficulties will be locked unless you complete the difficulty before it.
Thanks for any answers. I'm asking this on behalf of my father.

yes, you have to beat normal to play nightmare, nightmare to play hell, and hell to play inferno.

Diablo Fan 2000+ posts, can't answer question... i'm confused?
in all Diablo games, the start from Nightmare difficulty the AI level is equal to if not higher than someone who has completed normal. there is no chance you could get through Nightmare without finishing... you couldn't even hurt anything.
or is it that you were just planning on xp leeching?

You say that like Blizzard hasn't given us drastic changes to the series gameplay style..............
I find it a perfectly valid question if you haven't followed the game at all since announcement, not to mention I don't think its ever mentions from the development team and its (safely) assumed that its how it works.
Really strange question. Compare this with the attempt of going to any raid with a lvl 1 character in WoW.
Though, as it was showed (or is it shown?) in some quick run video, D1 was completely finishable with a lvl 3 sorceror.
But i really doubt Blizz will allow same tricks to stay in a brand-new game.
Fuck, looking back, I realize that this was a really obvious question.
Of course you have to play normal because they expect you to have a leveled character going into nightmare.
Thanks, guys. I don't follow every detail about D3 to a point.
fair enough, you definitely can't... though maybe xp leeching is a possibility, expect the answer to that one coming out within a few hours of launch.
Though i'm fairly sure i heard that you have to be within a certain radius of other characters to get xp, so even if it is possible it's probably going to be extremely difficult.
Well, it wasn't even that; my dad didn't want to have to play through normal before experiencing nightmare difficulty. I'm pretty sure he only played the higher difficulties in DII and, in his mind, it's not worth it to play through it once and then have to play through it again with "one eye closed," so to speak.
