Question Regarding Socketable Gear

  • #1
So I've been looking everywhere and seem to be getting quite a bit of mixed information.

My question is what item types are socketable and how many sockets can each item type have?

Using the filter on the D3 official site doesn't even show weapons as being socketable, which is obviously wrong. Any blue posts I've found are all outdated and are likely irrelevant now.

If anyone has any information, preferably a hidden blue post or an official word of some kind, feel free to shed some light on the issue.

I know they have said they are going to update the official game guide at release, but I find it hard to believe they would wait until the release to reveal something so crucial to the core gameplay experience.
At the End of Days, Wisdom shall be lost, as Justice falls upon the world of men.
Valor shall turn to Wrath, and all Hope will be swallowed by Despair.
Death, at last, shall spread its wings over all- as fate lies shattered forever.

Weapons and helmets only, no idea how many gem slots there will be though.

This is the closest to an official source that I know right now:

    http://www.d3inferno.com/mods/ItemMods.html
    http://www.d3inferno.com/affixes/group_Sockets.html

It's datamined info from the beta client. It's not perfectly clear, but I think that Chest Armors can have a maximum of 3 sockets, Pants can have 2 sockets, and everything else can have 1 maximum socket.

Doesn't make much sense as something like a Shield could easily have 2-3 sockets and a Chest Armor could have 4 (sounds perfectly normal), but maybe they're toning down the number of gems we can equip precisely to force us make a choice.

    That's all I got :fret:

Gem socket types are special for "Helm" and "Weapon". The third type is simply anything else, which I'm not entirely sure what all that encompasses.

Sockets will be in all types of weapons and armor. Not just helmets and weapons. The Game Guide is wrong on that.

The amount can and will vary, even within the same piece of gear I think. Diablo II had as many as three sockets I believe, so we could see three. Any more than that is just overkill if you ask me.

While I'm excited that a wide range of gear can have sockets, I'm a bit dissapointed that everything other than weapons and helms will be basic stat boosts.

It seems to me that, other than weapons and helms, a Barbarian will put Strength gems in every open slot and Wizards will put Intellect gems in every open slot. If that is indeed the case, then the point of having sockets to add diversity and customability is lost.

Perhaps in Inferno you will need to mix the various gems as resistances, dodge chance, etc. may be invaluable. Time will tell.

Where are you getting that from? The only info on the Game Guide is of helms and weapons. They haven't added other armor slot bonuses yet.

Oh, ok. I'd still wait and see what the up-to-date Guide says before we make any final calls though. They might make it more interesting.
