I was playing the free to play Mythos Global, which "borrowed" a lot of UI ideas from D3 and couldn't help but notice how well the WASD movement felt. Since this works in addition to the mouse, sometimes it's just nice to move the character in one direction while having the focus on my enemy on the other side of the screen.
Now, I have seen posts on this before where people asked for this feature in D3 but those threads were shut down with "this isn't WoW" replies. I understand it's not a necessity and the original Diablo games were just fine being mouse driven, but if you haven't tried it, how do you know? When the console version of D3 comes out, they are most certainly going to add directional movement that does not rely on moving a mouse cursor with a gamepad stick.
Anyway, for anyone interested in the feel, try Mythos Global and you'll see what I mean. It really made me wish D3 would allow this simple control functionality which could be totally optional to every player.

It will not work the way the binding is initally released.
Right hand = Mouse
Left hand = 1-4 Keys for additional skills.
How can your hand function for your skill bar and WASD simultaneously.... Witcher 2 tried to do this but failed miserablly... it was fucking awkward.
I hear the game was 10x better with a controller than the awkward ass keyboard binding...
WASD simply doesn't provide enough accuracy. While they have said that movement feels better on a game console because of the joystick, I dont see what that has anything to do with allowing WASD on the pc game. If you want to hear it from jay himself watch any of the diablo 3 QA sessions from either of the past 2 blizzcons, it was asked at both.

Sure it works, I even gave you an exact example. The hotbar in Mythos works exactly the same way as Diablo 3 (except you have 12 buttons). Using WASD works just fine in combination with using hot key attacks, besides this is not something you have to do all the time. I still move around with the mouse, but use WASD 50% of the time to give rest my finger from the clickfest.

So how do you plan on using the skillbar AND WASD ... ? Diablo is and has always been mouse game
So far the only responses against this have been the standard "It wont work" "mouse is fine" etc.etc.
The OP never said it didnt work or that it wasnt fine, but I am 100% with them on the point of having an ***ENTIRELY OPTIONAL*** WSAD movement system implemented. Even if it isnt optimum and doesnt allow for the range of movement clicking does, sometimes, I just want a fucking break from clicking/holding the mouse buttons 500 billion times per game.
Watch some porn... your hand will get a rest from clicking... give your wrist and forearm some excercise then

Erm...just rebind the keys? Like I do now? All my action bar skills are bound to my mouse. I never use my keyboard while playing.
And the whole "diablo has always been a mouse game" is a load of old bullshit. Slavery was normal until someone decided it wasnt.
Thalidomide was used for morning sickness, until it was found it caused horrible birth defects.
And before you go off on one about how they arent linked, my point is:
Just because something HASNT been done, doesnt mean it SHOULDNT be done. Just because something IS being done, doesnt mean that it is the BEST or ONLY way to do it.
Such a well thought out and eloquent response. Clearly you have bested me in this argument...
You are comparing apples to oranges and throwing a hissy fit. Comparing slavery to changing a perfectly fine... optimal gaming input method is no where similar.
Just because you are an exception to the majority and bought a mouse with 7,8,9,10,11,etc buttons doesn't mean blizzard should change an entire game dynamic.
I would like them to make it work with console controllers. But I think it won't be possible to select far away archers easily enough for that to happen.

I don't know, I think it could work quite well. It's no different than how WoW works and many people move with WSAD while casting spells. If you want an example that's closer to Diablo, look at Alien Swarm that's on Steam (it's free to play so you could try it if you want). It uses WSAD for movement, you aim with the mouse, and you use other hotkeys for items or grenades and it works really well.
I actually would like to be able to move with WSAD, if only to move while not clicking. I also like the idea of moving in one direction while aiming in another. I've gotten used to moving back and forth using micro management (Starcraft players know this one) but being in direct control wouldn't be bad.
In the end, I'd like it, but I can live without it

Thanks zerObit, I kinda figured I'd get a bunch of "this is not Diablo" childish responses, even though a working example was given to them. Mythos is basically a 100% Diablo clone, it was even created by the original Diablo 2 developers, but people don't listen to logical reasoning. I've seen Jay Wilson's video where he commented on this and just because he likes to use the mouse ALL the time, why can't we get a simple 4 directional key binding option? This is not a giant feature to request.
Personally, I found it very nice to have the option to move around between battles using the WASD keys and give my mouse a rest for a few seconds.
I actually think the REAL reason is simple, they don't want people to be shifting gear around the inventory while the character is moving.
It really depends on how you set up your bars. It's already been mentioned you can reassign keys. I tend to keep most of my well used abilities on LMB, RMB and button 1. If I get the chance, I do change things up to my mouse 4 and 5, but let's assume I don't have that option.
You would then save buttons 2-4 for abilities you won't use that often and only want for certain situations. Don't forget, even with a WSAD system, you could still have click to move, so there's really NO downside to this. It would let people use any system they wanted to.
In all truth, I'd only really see range/caster classes use it, but who knows, some melee might have fun with it.

I use it on my melee character mostly between battles. Usually while looking at the new drops in my inventory while moving to a new area. Works very well.
A locked isometric camera angle is not conducive to having WASD movement unless the terrain and player pathing are built around it from the beginning. This game was built ground up with the notion 360 degree movement will be fluid and easily achieveable rather than quadrant based movement.
While it could work, it is certainly going to give a significantly worse user expirience in many areas of the game relative to the default click-to-move control scheme. Blizzard wouldnt give an option for something that is going to produce a poor user expirience, thus it will mostly likely never be added to D3. This idea is further supported by the fact the in game HUD is completely based around click-to-move as well.
TL:DR- it works in some games well, but this game isn't one of them. If they cant make it match the user expirience of the current control scheme, they will not even consider adding it.
I was just testing this some more on a caster (again in Mythos) and I found it REALLY nice to be able to move away from the mobs while keeping my focus on them and spamming fireballs. The character stops during the cast, but it's still nice not to have to move the mouse across the screen to click where I want the character to run then move back to target the mob. The mob is always targeted no matter the direction I move. It's really puzzling how anyone could argue with this system, especially if was added an an option to the controls.

Good point, would be a nice feature to have just for that.
Diablo works great as a clicker just get the hell over it already. THEY ARE NOT GOING T CHANGE IT. So this discussion is mute.
I believe the word you are looking for is "Moot", I also think that word doesn't mean what you think it means. Moot means a subject is debatable, which is what we are doing now, debating.
So the word you're probably going for is "pointless"... however, the requesting of an optional system is never pointless. A control scheme like this would work very well in Diablo 3. Using WSAD for the 4 cardinal directions (up, down, left, right) works in other games that are top down (or isometric). Truth is, adding it as option means it wouldn't change anything for the game as you may want to play it.
Quick question, I don't have D3 Beta (never got lucky), but can you hold the mouse and keep moving in the direction of the pointer? As in chasing the pointer without having to click every time?
