So I just checked with my local Gamestop, where I have a copy of the CE waiting for me on May 15th and they told me some sad, sad news:
They didn't sell enough pre-orders of the CE or game to do a midnight release.
So I have to wait until 10:00 a.m. (central time) on Tuesday the 15th to get my copy and put in the CD key to the client that will already be downloaded to my machine.
So I'm sure there is some rock solid logic and reasoning as to why the game can't be sold and picked up sooner - with the client already being able to be downloaded and ready to go - why can't we get our tangible copies a few days eariler and be ready to put in the key and play when the servers go live.
I know, I know - "OMG just buy a digital copy you noob!" And I may still go that additional route as well. However, I'm throwing out the question to the DFans.com forum cosmos - Why no Blizzard gimme mah game noaw!!!
Server collapse I can understand. And in Blizz games of the past, the server is usually pretty wonky the first hour or two after it goes live. So waiting isn't such a bad thing - however, the store doesn't open until 10:00 a.m. the next morning....
The more that I think about it - it really doesn't make any sense. Why not let the game be purchased in a brick and morter store the day before - Monday the 14th - and then let people input their CD key at midnight PST on the 15th?
Never preorder (or buy) from Gamestop. They are utterly awful. According to my calculations, Amazon.com is roughly a billion times better (give or take a few million, depending on rounding and the price of tea in China that day). Plus Gamestop is really scummy. Terrible business ethics and all. But seriously, I'm getting my CE ASAP from Amazon. Then again, I do also have the Annual Pass, so it doesn't bother me any. My plan is to sleep until midnight EDT (or 3 AM EDT if they open the servers at 12 PDT) and play all day.
Isnt CE a waste of money really, you can get all those infos like behind scene artwork form internet later after relese anyway, and CE dont make you any superior ingame than standart edition, except for heroism that u spend more money on it
The way I see it is that I'm gonna be pouring hours into this game for a long time to come. I might as well get as much out of it as I can. Besides, those wings look neat, unlimited exclusive dyes sound cool, and the exclusive banner is promising. It sets me apart from others who don't have it.

Anyway I preodered D3 DVD version from shopto.net and am very pleased with they services.
Pssh, if that was the qualifier for what's a waste of money, University Degrees would be pretty worthless too!
Well see it like this, 10am will enable you to sleep, so that when people that started playing at 1am will have to sleep at some point you can still be fresh and really enjoy the game.
Getting your copy early would work well for games like Rift, Starwars, and other MMO's but this is Blizzard. It's safer to let people trickle into the servers then too all try and upload all at once, Blizzard knows this, hell Diablo 3 already sold more the Starwars...and it still has a month to go till it releases, thats not including all the pre-orders at game stores or online ordering, that just includes the Annual Pass/Digital Downloads.
Diablo 3 will easily have 4mil+ possibly more in its lifetime, so no Blizzard will not let everyone get ready for it, they will let you trickle in.
heh I'm sorry sucks to be you? Sounds like you probably live in a pretty rural area because I can't imagine any gamestop in metro areas not having a midnight release. And no just no. A. Blizard and other companies would not allow that. Partly because people will datamine and manage to find a way to play if they have a full unencrypted copy. And also a lot of companies are trying to push their own digital download services. Why would they give incentives to buy at brick and mortars? If you want it up and ready shoulda bought a digital version or suffer through somewhere with a midnight release. That or take a chance you get it early via online retailers.
If this the case for me , which it probably isn't because I got my preorder at a downtown location, I am going to exhaust myself so that I fall asleep early (the green stuff is not barf!). I'm going to get up nice and early eat a nice breakfast and be there when the gates open up to pay my bill and get the hell out of there. At this point I will literally be at a sprint everywhere I go and don't plan to drive any slower than 30km/h over any speed limit.

Im from Aus and my local EB Games told me that they dont get told until 2-3 days till release if they are having a midnight release. They had always done it for the wow xpacs so touch wood D3 gets the same treatment. But the strange thing is the store manager said its not up to her or head office its up to the company releasing the game and they only get about 2-3 days notice.
Sooo not sure weather thats blizz or the Aus distributer but fingers crossed.

Laws are different in Australia. The guys at GAME told me I would receive my CE the day before release, only because I preordered using the online store and there is some different law/loophole regarding shipping from a warehouse compared to retail sales. That is straight from the horses mouth - as I wanted to guarantee a CE copy ready to go at 4AM AEST (fffuuuuu so laaate in the niiight!!)
I have already prepared for such a thing to happen to me. I got the WoW annual pass so if my local Best Buy doesn't have a midnight release, then I will just play the normal version when the servers go live. Then, during school, I will go to Best Buy and pick up my CE. Go back to finish my last class of the day, then D3 for the rest of the night.

I don't always burn. But when I do, I use hellfire.
To those who asked, I live in Des Moines, Iowa, US. Des Moines is actually a fairly large city so I too was very suprised when they told me that they weren't planning on a midnight release. I never thought to check the other Gamestops in the area (thanks phatosen) to see if they have a midnight release planned.
I am totally a fan boy of Blizz and the CE is just too good of an opportunity to pass up. However, I feel that Blizz should re-evauluate their stance on hard copy vs digital copy of their future games.
I know that the benefit of all of us trickling in over the course of 24 hours might be a good idea for server stability - but I don't think that should be an excuse. We are rewarding Blizzard by purchasing a more expensive copy of their game with the bells and whistles that come with - yet we have to be the last line, so to speak, to get in to play. Now I know that its my local Gamestop's fault that I have to wait and not Blizz's - however - even if you break all speed laws to get home, you are going to be a few hours behind the rest. When they market "get the digital download and be the first to play when the servers go live" than I have to feel they support and encourage the desire to be first to play. So I don't feel too bad for whining about this
Ahh, I'm just rambling. Come Wednesday evening I will be so coked out on caffeine and all of this will be just a distant memory of annoyance. And @Ayr - waiting until ten the following morning might not be a bad idea. I just hope that I don't wake up every fifteen minutes going "is it time yet?!"
Even though I have the digital version also, I plan on going to my Gamestop the day before with a couple 20s to see if giving me my CE early is an option
Hmm I need to call my GameStop again. I called a few weeks ago and they said they didn't know yet, to call back in a few weeks. I better have that game at midnight!

"The Unchosen" Pain of Admirance Sigil (For those without -Feat of Strength-):
I will just do the 100% safe b.net download ready for midnight. I will 99% buy a CE as well after the fact and I don't think they'll be that scarce on amazon or ebay or wherever.

Good luck with that, collectors eds are selling out everywhere. I saw someone chucking an A grade meltdown at a local store here when they were told they cant get any more collectors eds. (kinda weird considering they have plenty of time to crank out more)

i ordered my CE from amazon... in conjunction with the digital copy. The CE game disc is a present for one of my good friends lol but I'm keeping all the goodies that come with it.
my closest gamestop is about 15 minutes away and they aren't even advertising for D3. I haven't seen any ads anywhere for Diablo 3, it saddens me. Come to think of it, i have never been inside a gamestop that sold PC games. I must live in a weird place
