Doing a casual run through the skeleton king with my level 12 Hardcore monk I encountered a group of skeleton archers with a "Nightmarish" boss in the middle of the group. After hitting him a few times It hit me with fear and I started running away. Being the first time I seen this, I was shocked. Well on my way back over to kill it with ease, how it should have been, it does it again. A total of 5 times in a row and it pissed me off. It wasn't doing enough damage to matter or kill me but the fact I ran away and back 5 times in a row before I could touch him was ridiculous.
I'm not sure if anybody else has encountered this but I think one of two things should happen.
1) The time enemies fear should effect you be reduced or
2) the frequency fear effects you be reduced.
If I was going up against monsters my level. I undoubtedly would have been killed, and quite unhappy.
Sounds like some serious bad luck; being a ranged monster pack may even make the "Nightmarish" type a bit OP?
I've run into packs of Nightmarish monsters before, and at times, I throroughly enjoyed the challenge!
I don't believe this type of monster champion is imbalanced or anything of the sort, but without really testing it, I do wonder if the "Fear" effect has a diminishing return...
@Feralio: I love the idea of a "Jailor" type monster! Sounds like a great idea, especially for a ranged mob vs. Melee characters (or even to root Ranged characters attempting to run away )

Build Courage, when Courage seems to fail...
Regain Faith, when there is little reason for Faith...
Create Hope, when Hope is forlorn...
I've only encountered this issue once but imagine running toward an enemy with a melee character. about to swing and boom. your now running half a screen away, you get so close once again and boom. Fear. for the second time. Adding up to a total of 5 times.
I think anybody would agree, running back and forth 5 times before being able to kill an archer constantly shooting you would be extremely annoying. That +being the same level as the monster +mob of enemies = you being really pissed or losing your hardcore character or just dying in general. Either way I wouldn't be very happy.
"... but please don't complain about the way they put it. It is "modern" gaming..."
I know the game, i love the game, but there are updates and patches for a reason. theres a beta for a reason. they make minor changes for a reason and my complaint stands. 5 fears in a row is annoying as fuck and i think it should be less frequent.
This seems like a good reason to first play through normal, before jumping into hardcore.
When you play hardcore its really not that difficult if you keep an eye on your health and make sure you keep some potions handy. But in further difficulties is where you need to be careful, take things slow. Do a little extra grinding. It'd be much better to end up in an area where your a higher level then you would be if you just stuck to the paths.

Yes, but some new mod on a mob could catch you by surprise if you didn't know what it did. Like Iron Maiden.

I used to shoot people in the knee with arrows, then I took an arrow to the knee.

Ive come across NM a few times. Imo, its nothing gamebreaking, even when done repeatedly. I personally think its fine as is, but Im sure at later difficulty levels and areas it might mean alot of deaths. Just another challenge we need to overcome, and I welcome it.
Please don't let this be nerfed... Yes, they're annoying packs. Yes, you could die from them if they were your level. Hey, that's gaming for you. There's a chance you might not survive!
Have you ever done a D2 Hell difficulty Immune-pack with Lightning Enchant, extra fast and Fanaticism (to name a random pita combo)? That takes you quite some time to kill at a high risk of dying if you don't have the right element to counter the immunity or a good merc. Suck it up and live with it. 8-)
agree with most of the posts here. the fear is not even bad. you were probably unlucky to get it 5 times in a row, but as far as i can tell youve only encountered one nightmarish monster. I personally think they are fine as is. i can barely tell a difference against them except for its "different" than what ive been used to in beta.
If all else fails, im sure someone will post a walkthrough for you post release
I disagreed, this group of mob should not be nerf. All of the mobs ability cast their ability on a random timer Therefore, sometime you won't get fear and sometime you do. This is how Diablo's sereis has always been, and that is why a lot people like it. This is especially true for myself. I like the random prevalence of the game.
Another example I can think of is when peeps cannot get the loot they want, and they go on the forum and right up a thread about the loot drop rate should increase. I seen these kind of post many time, and every time a Blizzard's employees would responded with "It is the random nature of Diablo game." Thus, this is my point is that, the random nature of the Diablo's series is what some peeps should assimilate, and embrace it.
I love it... When a mob doesn't have any random affixes, most think the beta is "way too boring and easy".. Put Nightmarish on a pack, and a nerf is wanted.. LOL, just wait for when the game actually gets hard.

I don't need advise how to kill it which people are responding like I can't play the game.
The point of this is..
I don't agree with me getting Feared 5 times in a row...
