I've thought about this since Blizz announced that only 4 players can be in one game at a time. In D2, (when I was not grinding) i had some of my friends in a game just chatting around and showing off our recent finds and best loot. I also liked to join some other games, just to interact and TRADE (best times ever :P). But now, with only 4 players cap in a game (excluding PVP Arenas), the experience will not be the same.
Do you think it will be a good idea, to have in a the game modes a place like a "Tavern", where more players can inetract, trade, spend some quite time chatting between PVE and PVP?
The 4- character limit is a very bad thing for me, because I have a guild of real life friends and we won't be able to play together like this... I guess there was some sort of limitation, didn't they say that the screen would become waaay too chaotic 'cause of the spells if 8 people were allowed?
What you suggest is a very good idea I think - it would be very useful I think...But you might get too much spam from the other people? Diablo 3 would be played by a lot of people, so I suggest a limit again...(certainly not 5 or 6 )
I understand the idea of not having more than 4 people in a PvE game... But a game mode, like a "Channel" (I like the Tavern idea) where you don't fight, jsut woner around in your gear and chat/trade. Many ideas may come from this - like "tables" where you sit and chat wil some of the players in the game. Hmm... it makes you think more...
A "Tavern Mode" would be awsome!! "Hey let's hang out and have a beer while I show you my big axe of awsomeness I just got last night!" Would be a nice way to make trading too, instead of just using the AHs.
Yep, I'm sure so many interesting things could be created around such a "game mode". But possibly it will interfere with some of the game mechanics which they cherish so much. Especially the Auction House. They would love it to be the primary trading grounds, or at least I think so.
Sometime last year there was a guy claiming to be a beta tester, he was talking about a trade bazaar, quite similar to the bazaar in Everquest, he was full of BS but i was quite disappointed when the AH system was announced without any indication for a more serious face to face trade option (yes i know you can meet people 1 on 1 or in a game of 4).
I know that its too late in the development cycle but I like your Tavern idea. I think you could really expand on that as well. Game news, patch notes, and maybe a link to the auction house could be posted in the Tavern. In hardcore mode, it could have a recent obituraries of high level players. And here would be something really cool . The tavern is in the stands to an arena. You could stand by the windows and watch an area match up from a different angle. It would be something different than just a spectator view. Biggest problem though would be the taverns would have to be fairly small. 30 people tops or you would end up with a chat that moved way too fast and full of spam.
I like your idea, but it would be a lot of work for Blizzard to incorporate it into the game.
I'd like this. Especially with no ability to make games with custom names, I feel like player-player trading is going to be non-existant other than between friends and of course through the AH. A "tavern" type game as you say it would be great, allow 8-12 people or something for trading and maybe even allow duels between mutually consenting players just for fun with no death penalties. This game definitely needs a good gathering place to just chill though, if you join a pub and game try to chat or trade people are gonna flame you for being a leecher and tell you to start killing or gtfo.
this whole tavern idea reminds me of org in wow, everyone just standing around,
You have a point. But I still think that if the mode allows as Baconweave said - 8-12 players, it will be taken up with enthusiasm. I know this is not a MMO, but this does not mean that at some extend the MMO features can't be usefull and fun.
It seems Blizz is scared from evolving, they don't like taking risks... But still, there will be 2 expansions... We shall see...

Then don't use it?
A great idea, especially if there were some other mini games involved such as dueling and trading.
im optimistic, if it works great if it doesnt well better luck next time, thats if they had something like that in d3, i just said it reminds me of org in wow, i didnt say i hate it or like it

Basically what I thought.
Don't get me wrong, I like the idea and loved that game but don't you think that this is too leaned towards being 'WoW-like'?
I think having server-based chat rooms would be sufficient. Although i guess they could add whole-open public areas that are themed different depending on which act your character is in.
The main problem is that Diablo is a game where all of the players group up together and slaughter whatever monsters are in a screen's width at any given time. If there were reasons to split up to divide and conquer, having more than 4 players or having instanced areas which seperate groups could co-exist in one game would be possible. If you combine Diablo's mob-like mentality of gameplay along with the developers being unable to make the game less visually noisy with 8 players on screen, you have this situation were you just can't go beyond 4 player gameplay.
Now, when it comes to PvP being limited to 4 players (as far as I know) that's just lazy game design. It could and would be possible to add group PvE scenarios alongside the main quest progression, or even 6-8 player PvP scenarios along with arena, but it seems like Blizzard doesn't want to be bothered.

Some people tell me I'm going to hell. I just let them know that I've already packed my bags!

This would not be wow-like expand your game experiences a little.
Many many games have instanced towns where communities gather while fight areas are party only.
Dragon's Nest and several other free, steam, iiji games and so on work this way.
Wow has the entire game in one roaming area until you have to travel to what is somewhere very distant/different expansion game content a raid or dungeon with a party.
First I want to say that i didnt expect the difference of the quality of the users here and in the official Blizzard forum to be so huge! Even dough there is always someone who acts like a hater, you are really able to think and make good arguments... I've had to move here long ago...
Now on the point... I'm sorry that I couldn't make pool with 3-4 options, so we could be clear where are we all at. But as I can tell, the situation is 50-50. We like the idea of communicating in some more direct/visual way, but we are scared of the game becomming WOW like.
I understand. Sad to say is that I won't be able to join some of my friends game and would have a dilemma if I have the highest MF amongst my friend and 3 of them want me to join them and the other 3 as well.

I feel socially disconnected in Diablo 3.
I know it's not an MMO, but playing socially is a HUGE part of a game's longevity in 2012.
Then don't use it?
