Basic Attack hasn't been removed from the game, though it is currently unavailable in Beta Patch 13. The development process is all about iteration, and in the beta specifically, the result can sometimes lead to situations where certain mechanics aren't available or are implemented in a way that's not totally complete -- at least temporarily.
In later builds, we're looking at having Basic Attack as an option under "Primary" in the skill UI, which will (by default) assign it to the left mouse button. Also, as many players have already noticed, your hero will default to Basic Attack if there aren't sufficient resources to power a given spell or ability.
I, for one, am very glad its not removed. Thoughts?
when your basic attack only hits ONE target for only 100% dmg. there is zero point in ever using it. ever. wouldnt make a difference if it was removed. but when you take away peoples choices they get angry, even if its a bad choice. lawl

Its better that the option is there imo. Melee classes will probably never use it, but I'd like to think that casters might in later levels with some crazy builds, maybe not viable, but still fun.
It shouldn't be too much to ask to just give us a few extra action bar slots and the ability to drag and drop skills (and basic attack) onto them, rather than making basic attack a sub-par Primary ability to waste one of the 6 skill slots.
Well, thats one thing that finally leaves up to basic standards. I don't care if that attack did 1% damage, there was no reason for it to be removed, especially when it keeps existing in various states. Besides, the "let me do what the hell I want" phrase comes to mind.
Personally, the only reason I want it, and why I want it on the left mouse button, is because I hate having skills on left click, thats for movement and basic attack, its simple, its how its supposed to be. Melee characters do have good replacement for a left click, but others simply don't.
Peoples only want basic attack because they can't. When it comes in game, they don't care anylonger. Give me an exampl of when basic attack can be better than any generater skill, or a skill that don't spend resource.

Because WD and wizard all don't have melee attacks, who said it needs it needs to be better than another build.
Telling to people to use spectral blade to play as melee is like telling them to use shock at point blank. Sure your in melee range but your not swinging a weapon.
Good to hear this... although there needs to be a dedicated button for basic attack, maybe press another button to toggle it or something.
It's just kind of dumb for a character to be holding a weapon and be unable to use it. Without basic attack you'll have a WD holding a knife but with no abilities that even resemble melee attacks. There's just no real reason to take it away, even if you won't use it 99% of the time.
Also, for as many times as Jay Wilson mentions melee wizards, having basic attack in the game is the only way you truly get a melee wizard. Otherwise you're just casting spectral blade, which is a spell. I'd like to see them (re) add passives or something that would take advantage of basic attack though to create an even greater variety of builds.
Is it wrong that all I read from that was "in later builds"
on topic, I'm so glad I went to make a Melee DH last night in the beta but essentially couldn't because prior to getting a full set of "melee" type skills I had no choice but to use bows,

At least the option is there.
There's still literally zero reason to use it. Even the casters have zero-cost spammable abilities that do more than 100% weapon damage. There is literally no reason, none, zero, to ever use basic attack, unless you were purposely gimping yourself for challenge or for fun.

But hey, keep it in, and keep the crybabies from crying. I want to see them go and make their stupid builds that require basic attack now.

Melee Wizard and/or Witch doctor.
