I read this--> http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/4079846429 today and was devastated. I really did not mind that D3 did not have a built in voice chat feature because I knew of other services available that would meet my needs. I actually recently purchased an one year mumble service with 5 seats so I could VC with all my friends while playing Diablo. But now, it sounds like I may not even be able to use mumble. This will really make the game less enjoyable for me.
I guess I have a few questions for the community:
1) Will Blizzard find a fix for this before release; if not, ever?
2) Will Blizzard surprise us with their own VC built into the game?
3) Does anyone other than myself really care?
I really hope Blizz will fix this problem in one way or another. FYI, I am not trolling, I will buy the game and love every minute of it regardless of if they fix this issue or not, I would just really like to see this fixed.
When the newest patch was deployed I was able to play with a friend with mumble going and the overlay on top of the game. He did have a few crashes trying to start up a new character while it was going though, but it soon worked.
Question for all. Would blizz have any obligation to fix this or is it up to mumble to patch their app?
That is a good question. Personally, I would say that Blizzard is obligated to get it fixed. The only reason I say that, is because I think that Voice Chat should be a feature that all modern multiplayer games should have. The fact that D3 will not have a built in voice chat client lends me to think that they should at least support the use of a 3rd party service such as mumble.
They likely don't have an integrate voice chat yet because they're (again) likely developing a general Battle.net voice system that integrates all Blizzard products.
Actually everything Blizz will be working with after Diablo 3 goes out will be Battle.net account wide. Mists of Pandaria also finally introduces account bound achievements.
They're just keeping to good stuff for later. Though later is always a vague thing for them. But I'm pretty sure they'll never support any kind of 3rd party software unless it was developed by PopCap. Because PopCap is awesome. When it doesn't cater to the mobile audience.

Is this a guess or has blizzard made any comment on such a thing? that would be awesome.

Blizzard never comments on things that they've no idea when they might finish. But when the voice chat for WoW failed miserably and pretty instantly Blizz came with the response "we won't be reiterating this version of the voice chat and instead will be focusing on making it from scratch".
It's been quiet since then and there's no voice integration for D3 and the really buggy voice chat of SC2 that I don't remember anyone being happy with (having a lot of people switched over to Skype/Vent/TS).
From my point of view of an avid Blizz follower for more then a decade now, it's pretty safe to assume Voice Chats have so far been done just so they can say "oh yeah, we totally have voice chat in our game" and there is something bigger coming down the pipeline. Blizz never leave anything in such bad shape. They'll always find a way to make it awesome, but it usually takes years. Just like the SC2 marketplace, or account bound achievements coming in MoP.
I won't be surprised if we need to wait for Titan to see a crossgame voice chat but it's gonna happen. Just like console and PC players will soon start playing games in coop mode through the internet. Maybe even D3. We'll see.
Well, unless sony and xbox find a way to use blizzard servers for the console version we won't be seeing it for D3, and in all reality that is still a bit far away. I don't think we'll see cross game chat either through battle.net either. But I think that you guys are onto something that they will eventually release a much better voice chat that will then be implemented into whatever games are the most current in each franshise.
No it would be mumble responsible for patching it and fixing it so that it didn't crash, they aren't going to worry about you using third party sites with their game, and have no obligation to either. But from what I know of the mumble developer he/she is really good about this kind of stuff, and will be wokring on it as much as possible, always heard that the developer is really good in that sense. Personally I'll be using vent, but I haven't tried to see if it crashes the game or not. It could have something to do with D3 pulling too much bandwidth then the pull from mumble (even as small as it is) is enough to crash the game, but that's just a guess.

There is much work to be then in that sense but progress is being made as we speak. Sony, Valve and Blizz are patting their backs over the last few months for working towards achieving this thing. Microsoft on the other hand will probably only do it to integrate Windows with Xbox so you can play just those two game types. And they're not working with any other major developer.
It's in the near future though. And if not - there's always cloud gaming to look for. But I'm very skeptical for it. Don't like the idea in general.

This works on my mumble, so I hope this works for you guys too.
Configure > Settings > User Interface (tab) > Expert Config (box = tick) > Overlay (tab) > Enable Overlay (box = untick).
Done!
