If an open Beta happend I think There would be alot less push from everyone for a release date. Just a 2 day any one can play experience. One people would be able to try the new rune system and see it's not as bad as they think. Secondly the outcry from every one who wants a beta key would also be fixed! Last once the weekend is over people will be rejuvenated and happy to wait just a little longer for the games release.
if they did open beta you wouldn't even be able to play you know right?
They only have some many dev servers, login servers would be in a constant que, game servers would be crashing left and right with horrible horrible server lag.
they really need to do a full server stress test to see if they can handle it. the only way to do this is to open the beta up. if they dont, there might be problems on release day

they already did that, you dont need to stress test every single server, just a few, which they already did with the 100k, the first few days until they opened up more servers

don't you mean will have problems on release day? this is blizzard we are talking about. I don't recall any release where severs didn't crash and was almost unplayable for the first week.
i recall when WoW Wolk came out... that was crazy severs where down for 2 days and didn't work right for 3
An open Beta Would be good not only for the cummunity but it would work as a good server stress test for a large scale amount of people. Doing ths would show that the game is close to being released also so its good on many levels.
The reason for no open beta is a simple one....betas aren't for people to play, it's for the company to stress test. They don't need 1 million people stress testing a whole bunch of servers. Just a small server or two then you can replicate them all. They know the testing and they know what works from internal builds and testing phases. HAving the open beta would then also mean everyone downloading the beta client, getting it up and running then all of them losing their access after 2 days...that would be a nightmare (no pun intended). The planning and logistics would be two weeks easy for everything to be completed, two weeks they can spend finishing the game. As awesome as it would be to be playing the beta, doesn't look like it will happen via 'open'. Gotta win a damn key.

Sometimes you don't always know where you stand... until you know that you won't run away.
As much as all of us without beta keys would like it, blizzard won't do an open beta. It would be immensely fun to play with a ton of people; however, as said before, a beta is for testing not for everyone to try the game.
On a different note, I do see them doing some sort of free trial in the future, after the game is out, not that it helps us out now.
Blizzards not doing an open beta, because open betas are for media hype, and showcasing the game. D3 is different in that they are trying to preserve almost everything in D3 before release, hence the 1 and a half hour beta. It's strictly for testing, and most people who don't follow forums all day won't understand it. If anything rage will be higher because people (and paid off gaming magazines) will yell that the limited content means D3 is nowhere near done / finished / ready to ship. The case is the opposite, but the masses won't know any better.
It's just best to keep the numbers lower; Enough to test servers (which they did) and that's all they need. I'm thinking they might give out a huge batch to EU players, but I've got a feeling that besides that, the fansite beta keys are going to be the last major giveaways, because we are pretty damn near release =D
They don't NEED to. They are giving away more keys to rebuild hype for the game but not every single person who is interested is entitled to play. While beta's are certainly enjoyable they shouldn't be treated as demos although I think it's the direction PC gaming may be heading to. It's why Bioware let everyone signed up into Swtor beta and on top of that gave away hundreds of thousands of keys making it impossible to not get in.
I really wish they would make a better outline of how Beta testers get selected. My friend and I have extremely similar setups with connection, living area, and everything else but my computer is just a little bit better. He was selected and i was not. Obviously this had made me furious and he doesn't enjoy playing as much because we cannot do group activities. If they would just tell exactly how they decide these people i would be happier.

Hmm, I don't remember that at all, I remember WotLK and Cataclysm were both quite smooth launches. BC on the other hand, was quite the mess.
I think an open weekend as release approaches is a good idea. Those servers are gong to get hammered when the game goes live. It would give them a good test case to work off of to see if they can handle the load. I like what they did with SC2 also, when you pre-ordered you got early access tot he multiplayer part fo the game.
Yep, test weekend, when nobody would be able to play just because nobody would be able to log in in time to actually play before the weekend ends from exploding servers.
Would be interesting to see it though, just to see if I'll ever actually get in.
An open beta would rock but there have been plenty of blue posts saying its not going to happen. And as flexable as Blizzard are to the community I just know they wont open it up, as stated in other posts everyone hammering the servers would chump it up in no time flat. Everyone is keen to get into beta and have a chop but all we can do is just keep up our contest efforts and just hope for the best while we wait for release date.
Expect the worst and hope for the best and release date should be here eventually.

I dont think that the servers are full thing will be an issue, considering its not an mmorpg like wow, and the max number of players that will be in 1 game will be four. though i would not be opposed to an open beta, but id rather things just wrap up so all of us can enjoy what he have been waiting so long for.
(that's what the beta is currently)
