I have not had the pleasure to play the beta as of yet so I hope the demon hunter will be a suitable replacement fot the zon. The amazon was my favorite character from its uber times through its nerfs. I felt it was the best "rounded" character that fit my style of play. I always seem to verge towards the ranged style of play. I played a ranger on DAOC for example. Perhaps it comes from my real life afinity of archery. I am so hoping that the demon hunter suites my style and becomes my fav. I am not so concerned with having the uber of uber but would rather have a good rounded toon that allows me to play solo as well as jioning and contributing to a party. oes anyone with experience from the beta have any words of wisdom in this regard?
I don't think you'll be dissapointed. To me the Demon Hunter seems to be a mix between the Amazon (without the javalines) and the assassin (with the traps) and has some of the same skills that the Amazon had such as multishot, strafe, and so on. The play style seems pretty similar, and there may be other moves in common as well, but I didn't play my amazon very long.
I do think though that of the range classes the Demon Hunter will have the steepest learning curve, your slows will be super important, but you'll have plenty of time blazing through normal to get used to it, so I think you'll like it.

You do have a good point. You won't be limited to crossbows, there are regular bows, and you can duel wield one handed crossbows. Which I guess isn't much better.
But you are right in the instance of Javeline based attacks and the kind of versatility they provided.

I don't think it was very common in D2 to have an amazon that used both the bow and the javelin skill tree. If you wanted both, you had to make two amazons, not switch between the two weapons. With that in mind the Demon hunter is a fine replacement for the 'bowazon' and if you were more a fan of the 'javazon' then maybe give monk a try.
I've had the chance to play beta on the past weekend (before and after patch) for some hours.
The experience I had with my dh was very similar to d2 amazon (bowzon) and it totally rocked. In terms of damage over distance, sniping ability and overall feeling it was very close. You wont be disappointed, I can approve that. But you can also play your dh into a very different direction (trapper build e.g., utility build, close range build, dual wield style ak the wild wild west style).
I had a lot of fun playing the Amazon as well, wasn't my favorite char but I did enjoy it. I liked the Assassin as well, again wasn't my favorite but I think they took the best of the Amazon and the Assassin in one character for the Demon Hunter. I look forward to playing the char, think it will be pretty good later in game and pvp. DW crossbows.... yes please.
You may miss the Amazon now, but when D3 comes out you'll be happy with the classes they give us. Plus Im quite sure that with each expansion pack they will be adding at least 2 new classes. And Im sure at least 1 of them will be very similar to the ones in D2. I personally am hoping for a shield wielding class such as the Paladin !!

Blizzard used to care about releasing Diablo III, then they all took an arrow in the knee...
But be carefull, as far as I know righ now Demon Hunter is weakest class in beta.... But it´s only beta right.....
I honestly disagree with DH being the weakest in beta. Their ability to kite and dps is great. I've come closer to dying on my undergeared Barb than with my DH that had crap weapons and missing tons of gear in slots.
thanks for all the responces...it lifts my heart to hear so many people are embracing the new changes that are coming to d3 that deviate from its predecesors. it is also good to hear )from what it sounds) that alot of the basic strategies have caried forward. it will be fun adapting new skill sets to tactics of old and to possibly consider new tactics that the new systems should open up. From the looks of it their seems to be good opotunity to build toons that are truely "multi-pupose"..i will reserve my opinion on the "skill tree" that i have thus seen in the game. I wonder if i will embrace the ability to "change" my character at will without have to create a new build. I suppose it will be more equipment oriented i that respect. I do, however, hope that it does not lead to coockie cutter builds that will be cloned and rampant through out the world.
I seriously thought you were talking about the company, Amazon.com... I feel mislead.
Me too lol

DH is extremely strong right now. Monk is the weakest. A few of the new runes really helped DH.
I never played Diablo 2 or 1 or whatever amazon was from, but DH is a blast. I doubt you'll be disappointed if you want a ranged class with a bunch of cool skills. Even the autoattack modifiers are pretty awesome looking.

I never said that I used the 2 trees at the same time; that would've made it impossible to finish Hell, you would just be too weak. But you could start a new Zon and pick the Jav/Spear tree, and it'd be nothing like your Bowazon. With the DH...yeah, you can start a new DH and use a bow or 2H xbow instead of dual-wielding 1H xbows, but it'll be pretty much the same thing.
I do recall players making hybrid builds in D2. I never have because bowazonz were my go 2 char i did not care for javazonz though some skills were awesome, not like multi shot but still. The zon would switch between bow and her javeline and her skills points would be spend on guided arrow, the jav lvl 30 skill, and the rest spent on critical strike and evasion and dodge passives. I am excited for the demon hunter because what many beta users have said, and I don't believe the development team will allow her to stay weak after they aknowleged that they sense she is the weakest of the toons at the moment.

don't worry, shes okay she got lots of awesome ranged skills, snares and great damage. but ofc, she cant take that many hits just like it should be!
i got a friend who also was all sold on the Amazon in d2 (multi+guided and jab and so on).
he tested DH at my place a few days ago and he loved it
as DH have guided arrow "hungry arrow?" and multishot (higher level then beta), even a cool version of strafe!. and for all those speed freaks out there. she does have that rapid fire whitch is amaaaaaaazzzzziiiinnngg
(( he also had to point out that the DH traps are AMAZINGLY powerful if used correctly! he loved them!))
The Amazon was always my first pick in Diablo 2. I remember having a Bowazon, and Javazon. I use to play them all the time, and start all over just to get those few skill points back and into the right areas.
I am excited to try out the demon hunter though, it seems that those that have played the beta say it incorporates parts of the bowazon really. I never really used strafe and always multishot on my amazon. From what I've seen Demon Hunter is the class that most likely will suit my type of play.
Who knows expansions will most likely bring new classes.
I do think that things need to change from Diablo 2 to 3. Having a class that is different but carries similar parts of classes such as the amazon and assassin brings a new life to Diablo. Who would want to keep the same skills / and exact abilities from Diablo 2, when we can have some of the same(exactly or similar) plus a range of brand new skills and abilities.
rehashing content is sometimes ok. It is always fun and exciting to have something new. e.g. class, abilities, skills, movement and how it all comes together.
I think you'll really enjoy the DH as a ranged class. She has a very interesting dynamic that focuses a lot on keeping distance between her enemies, so you'll have a lot more to concentrate on than just running around shooting piercing arrows. The class looks very tactical with it's various snares and the like. Plus she has a ferret.
(I'm talking about Nightmare and later difficulties of course. We know the story of Normal, lol)
I'm actually kind of glad that they have finally changed the amazon some. I didn't like that you could use javelins. i was a huge bowazon fan but now that the demon hunter has made the bow its main weapon i am very pleased. They have very interesting skills as well. So I am ok with amazon being replaced with demon hunter.
