New Battle.net Mockup

Bottom right corner could be your party members displayed. Also it would be great if you could right click the avatars in the chat to invite to your party, that would be awesome.

I like it! But I don't think the Battlenet feed is necessary. I'm thinking all that info can be displayed when you enter the chatroom, like it did back in the day.

    Really great job man!

Fair enough. But yeah I'm not really caring about specifics like that... we shouldn't have to. Blizz can figure that out :D

My formatting isn't the best either, and clutter/buttons, centering, etc... I didn't put as much thought as Blizz would, so criticisms are valid haha.

Get it to the Blizzmans NOW! :D As said before overall looks great. could perhaps be a bit cleaner or small diffies but indeed let Blizz figure that out! If they arnt changing it to this they are just weird in the head tbh!

    Very well done
Send it to Blizz, they would sure change it a bit, but oh well... everything is better than a character just standing there and doing nothing at all.

OneTwoSC, would you be willing to try to make a few more iterations based upon the feedback from this forum? I realize it takes up your personal time, but from the feedback that you are receiving here and on the D3 forums, I really think that it might help to convince Blizz. Just a thought. Thanks again for this awesomeness!

Maybe? It's hard to push revisions once the original is already popular. Honestly if I wanted to go further it would have to be a flow chart (if I actually wanted to be serious)... and that would take far too long lol. A lot of the criticism on my design is based on what they're seeing IN that image alone. There's so much I can't convey, like how the chat wouldn't be initially open, but rather it would be manually opened by the user if they wanted. Or how the chat avatars get replaced by party avatars when in a party.

And on top of this it takes a long time to think through what people would want and how to make it look nice. ie a lot of people don't care for the stat window down at the bottom, and I think that's fair... I just threw it there for fun. But what could replace it?

And is there something better than a crude lineup of avatars? Maybe there is, and I'd really have to think that through, so the people shouting 'you're all just nostalgic of D2' crowd can quiet down lol.

Edit: Though I may give it one more try... we'll see.

Really, them using their old system just updated and such with better graphics and more functionality would be a far step above what they did with Starcraft II. Watching a video someone posted on the warcraft III battle.net and discussing the features made me realized that so much has changed I wish they would take a step back.

Sure, make great games, but there is more to it then that. You could share and stream live replays on wcIII/sc, clan support, etc, all things people want with scII, but don't have. I hope they have a better system with their Diablo III battle.net. Would be a shame to ignore such a good service they had back in the day.

Looks kinda silly with the main game screen/menu looks like its been squished and moved aside for a... chat box.

It was okay in D2 but now its just thrown in for nostalgia sake.

imo the "main game screen" had a lot of wasted space...this makes much better use of UI real estate

I like it! But don't let that flatter you too much, you are still a mortal and could die if you are struck by lightning.

And I don't know why I said that... but you should make a topic on the official forums and watch it become highlighted.

I'm no designer but I thought it would be fun to shuffle stuff around and see how a new D3 bnet (once you logged in) could look... I tried to go off of Diablo 2's Bnet.

The chat itself could probably have tabs or whatnot. Also, I imagined that when you join a party or create one, the little 'avatar lineup' at the bottom would switch to your party's avatars (since there isn't much room behind your guy anymore lol). Then you could use the tiny arrow button next to "Monk Chat (1)" (which would say "Party") to switch back to avatars in the chat channel.

Also not really sure what "Leave Chat" would do... maybe or maybe not downsizes chat window, but it would take you out of the channel, leaving you to still type to friends/party.

    Edit: V2.0:

Better than Blizzard's current set up. Not just better looking but more user friendly. It also captures that good feeling we get when we get see people's characters and our own and compare and such.

I really like this design. My only real concern would be people playing on a standard resolution instead of a wide screen resolution. The UI would need to be able to support that.

Also, for party, it could probably just use a tabbed view where the chat avatars are. A tabbed interface for channel, party, guild, etc could work.

I'm guessing the chat/news side could shrink?

If you know anything about online chatting, a prominent chat window like this will never, ever happen - especially an unmoderated chat window. Oh the horrors.

    This.

I don't get why people are raving so much about this mockup. Sure, it shows a lot of dedication and thought from the person who designed it, with some added Diablo 2 nostalgia and such. But really, why such a huge chat window? And why the idiotic puppets in the bottom left? They're nostalgic, sure, but they add no value to the user at all. Also there really is too much stuff on the screen now. From an HCI (Human Computer Interaction) point of view, this is not a very good design. The eyes don't know where to look at first.

Not that I love the current chat implementation in D3, not at all. But a solution like this mockup isn't really a solution at all.

Let Blizzard now this and work with it! And pay you a few bucks for it! Hehe:)

    Best setup ever!

I am curious how many avatars would be shown? My understanding is that there won't be a ton of servers, so will there be literally thousands of avatars to display? If true, then there would have to be hundreds of individual channels to make it even remotely manageable by users.

You have some really good points. Again I don't want Blizz to implement my cluttered HCI disaster. But I want to highlight features that are simply social or fun.

I strongly disagree with your quoted statement though. My mockup goes on the basis that you won't start in chat, that it will just be news, and then you could join it which would make it like my image shows. Regardless of this, Blizz ALREADY added unmoderated chat, and look at their past games:
