About a year ago... I was the most excited about a game that I have ever been... We were seeing the skills, the rune system, Gems... Loot... talent calculators... oh man I was so happy.
I even made a diablo 3 fansite, which still gets a few hundred vistors a day even though I have not updated the content in 6 months...
But as I have been playing the Beta... patch after patch... watching features be ripped out or changed... I am less and less excited about this game.
I feel its being made for.... well new players who were probably in 3rd grade when I was killing Baal in Diablo 2.
Community Interaction in D3 will be slim at best. Gone are the days of public pvp games. Games where you could join and test PvP builds in a 100% un-restricted environment. I love that you can't hostile anymore, which was annoying even for a hardcore pvper like me.. but being forced to use the arena for any PvP is annoying. Hopefully they at least have arena options that don't always force you into a random 3v3 match. Hopefully there is 2v2, 1v1, FFA, Testing modes etc.
Say goodbye to trading games as well. While the AH is nice, its one more aspect of the game that removes player interaction and bartering.
The next thing that bummed me out, was adding the % weapon damage to every skill. I loved seeing that skill damage change with every level, every item. I mean my skills will still do more damage as I level and acquire new gear, but if I ever wanted to see the actual damage I was doing I would have to calculate it myself. Kinda annoying considering in things like PvP scenaries, knowing how much damage you can do at the right moment can be essential. Oh well, a little more work required on my part. They could of atleast kept the estimated skill damage on the skills.. at the bottom or something. Plus now the skill will "feel" the same all the time. It will always be a fixed % number. It's just not as fun. I love numbers.
Now they have removed the Rune drops, something else I was looking forward to. I wanted that satisfaction of working my ass off to increase my skills and progress my character and earn my customization. Now that is all removed and runed skills will just be given to me. Even though all the runed skills will still be there, it doesn't feel as customizable as before. I feel restricted to only use what blizz feels I should use, when they want me to use it... at least until after level 51~ when I finally have full access to everything.
I don't want to hear about how the new rune system gives you something to do from 31 to 60.. it wasn't like you were going to be getting the highest level runes as soon as you hit 31. You probably wouldn't even have them all by 60. Oh well doesn't matter now.
The new UI is... bad. It's clunky, restrictive, time consuming... and once again locks you down into what blizz wants. You don't have full access to a hotbar?? Limit the levels I get skills but don't limit what I can put in a hotbar. Don't force me to have a skill on Mouse1 and 2. Let me choose where I want my skills to be placed on my controls. I'm sure the UI and how it functions will change 10 more times before release, or will it?
The worst part of all is even with all the removal of features, the release date keeps getting pushed back. The longer they wait, the more other games have come out... and the more games will come out.
I feel we are going to get a highly streamlined & linear action RPG with very little customization and very little replay value. I don't feel this is the game that last as long as Diablo 2 lasted. I have a feeling that as soon as you roll 1 character for every class and beat Inferno with it, there will be no desire or reason to keep going..
There are a few quirks I hope change with upcoming patches or the release, but I personally really like the changes in beta 13. I was in my teens and early 20's playing the same Diablo games as you, and I'm really glad that D3 is not D1 or D2 with updated graphics.
The one thing I do not like in its current state are the public chat rooms. It is the only thing I miss from D2's bnet not being in D3. I liked seeing who was in the chat room and seeing their avatar at the bottom.
I think after I get past the SK in the final game the fun will come back. It's hard to become immersed in a beta with chars that aren't really your own in a story you only get a diluted fragment of. I am sooo excited to walk around Caldeum for the first time and go to to toe with the act bosses.
Player 2 joins the world, Diablo's minions grow stronger
Player 2: Wug?
Player 1: Wuw?
Player 2: Offer.
Player 1: Blah blah.
Player 2: Nty
Player 2 has left the world, Diablo's minions grow weaker.
Woo! Player interaction and trading... >.>
I don't like the RMAH, I really don't, but as long as gold as lasting using via good gold sinks, the AH will be a god send. I find it ridiculous how un-needed and completely useless gold has become in Diablo II (even though it was never all that useful to begin with...).
As to those third graders this game is "made for"?
Inferno will beat the living shit out of everybody, including me and you. This game is going to be hard. They've already said it's meant to be easy and casual in normal, then start kicking your ass in nightmare, and dominating you in hell and beyond. So if you're judging this game's feeling based on the first hour of act 1 normal.. I think you're kidding yourself. Act 1 normal in Diablo II doesn't feel like Act 1 nightmare, nor does nightmare feel like hell. The difficulty ramps up exponentially between those two things. And guess what? Unlike Diablo II hell, you'll never outlevel inferno monsters, so you can forget about the hit % advantage that high level 80's and above enjoyed in Diablo II.
No, the new skill UI isn't all that great, BUT I think they showed extreme intelligence simply by including the Elective Mode. Seriously, how many times does Blizzard preemptively include a way to let players who don't like the new features enjoy the old ones? Next to never? Somewhere around there, yeah. And I fully believe, after all the negative feedback about it, that they'll either change Elective Mode to look like the old UI, or just go back to it altogether.
I know you're concerned about the release date. We all feel that, and I'm the last one to blame someone for be on Blizzard's side about that issue, you can see my blog for further proof of that. However, you'd be doing yourself a great injustive by not playing this game. With every delay release, etc. I have doubted and been more and more angry at the Blizzard employees, but I have never doubted for a second that I would love this game and play it for years.
In all honesty, I told myself I wasn't worried about it, I lied to myself, I still go crazy over contests, and as soon as they end I'm going to tell myself I don't care again and then pray secretly for a beta invite.
I was extremely excited about Diablo 3 when it was announced. Now it's been so long since, that excitement has waned considerably. In the end there's only so long a dog will stare at a steak in a butcher's window before he goes elsewhere for food.
It'll be nice if it's a challenge, especially if it's one I don't need anyone else in the game to achieve. I spent years raid leading in wow. I want to be as far away from other people in games as I can now. Anyone who's had to raid lead should understand that.
I'll most likely stay away from the AH too, as well as keep any chat windows closed.

I'm less excited now than 1-2 years ago for sure. Many "'less good" changes since then, and some feature removals which seems to hurt the game.
Still, I basically went from "That game is game of FOREVER, I need it now!" to "I cant wait to play that game". So the excitement isn't totally gone yet

Wonderful analogy.
What made D2 cool: difficulty, builds, & equipment.
Blizz has stated: millions of combinations, more loot at launch than D2, & 4 modes of difficulty that you WILL die in.
Hmm..
Now, with all these investors, I'm sure they'll at least TRY to make the game good.
About release date:
They are admittedly so far behind. Shoulda been out already, but oh well.
If you're getting that bummed, stop paying attention until release.
Buy at release & love or hate what you get.
There's some excitement.
Yeah, none of the stuff you mentioned really matters all that much to me.
What excites me?
1. More emphasis on defensive skills. Less reliance on just doing a lot of damage and more on reacting to enemies to stay alive. More emphasis on tactical combat has me very excited for late game where you really need to focus on what you're doing as opposed to FrozenOrb, FrozenOrb, FrozenOrb, etc. Also read: removal of TP escape cheese/potion spamming. This is huge.
2. Skill system having a lot of viable skills. Moving away from mathematically correct builds and putting emphasis on ensuring a large variety of viable builds based on what you enjoy as a player. I like this as it lets you dictate how you play your character as opposed to it being hardcoded into a tiered tree or what have you.
3. Inferno. Having a difficulty that gives me a consistent challenge is really exciting to me, especially if game play is as tactical and interesting as mentioned in my first point.
4. Runes are just plain cool regardless of how they're applied.
5. All of the classes are very distinct/appealing and look like a ton of fun to play with skills I just can't wait to get my hands on.
Naturally it's impossible to say if they'll succeeed at any of this but it's obvious these are the things they're attempting to do, and that's why I'm so excited. Conversely, it's why I don't become frustrated at minor changes like PvP, lack of a barter system, lack of griefing, or how runes work, etc. because I still expect the core experierence to remain satisfying based on the principles they had when they set out to make this game.
. I have a feeling that as soon as you roll 1 character for every class and beat Inferno with it, there will be no desire or reason to keep going..
and this makes me very sad.
damn i got same consern from when D III was anounced i will be happy with getting my wizard through inferno if i am lucky
there is just nothing for you to go on after it nothing on what u can use that gear u farm on. There are no raid or any other content pve that u can do after inferno ofc and there is no rated pvp (we know why i still meniton it) so we farm for what killing monsters faster....i am losing my interest the furder i go on with this....as i see it there is 3 possibilities
1. i was wrong ( i hope i am ofc )
2. they will get new expansion out real fast after loads of ppl finish inferno
3. they will give us something to do bisides farming and pvp that is there just to gives us a brake from farming
i think both 2 and 3 are likely to happen we'll see
In all honesty, I told myself I wasn't worried about it, I lied to myself, I still go crazy over contests, and as soon as they end I'm going to tell myself I don't care again and then pray secretly for a beta invite.
I think the game will be awesome , i saw the video of the devellopers they were saying that we were gonna die alot and thats all im askin for !! play with my friends , pvp , finding nice items , trades , helpin other people, but the most important : we will have alot of things to do in the games ! I truly hope that its not gonna be easy to kill the last boss in the last difficuly , i mean i wanna have challenge !
thats all that matters really i think , play with friends , challenge , competion in pvp and ill be satisfied not you ?
I think the changes are awful, the hype has rebounded, and the nostalgia is losing its luster. Yes D3 is not looking as awesome as when it did half a year ago.
The game is starting to look like duke nukem forever. Blizzards ideas were awesome last year. Now I feel as though they are removing the functions we grew accustom to last year. To make it easier for casual players. This game doesn't look as fun as used to.
Jay's right. No one will remember how long it took for this game to come out. We ll remember how they gutted the game constantly and killed it.

Went outside today, the graphics were ok. But the gameplay sucked
But as I have been playing the Beta... patch after patch... watching features be ripped out or changed... I am less and less excited about this game.
It's tough to make a call on how good this game will be right now unless you're an internal tester at Blizzard and have played well into the game. I admit I get a little worried sometimes when I see how the game is being tweaked, but I have also played every Blizzard game since Rock N' Roll Racing for SNES. Blizzard has never let me down before and somehow I doubt they will start with D3. Let's talk again in 3 months.
people get so turned off of a game so easily, like the rune system, its not like they implemented that in d2 its a whole new system, the way they had it before wouldnt work, so they had to improve it, and thats what people dont understand, if it bothers you that much then dont buy the game... like im not a fanboy of blizzard, in fact ive grown to hate blizzard, their nonchalant devs and their condescending answers piss me off, but im not gunna go and say omg d3 is gunna suck, they change this that this and that, they're getting bitched at by every d3 fan to hurry the fuck up, then when they do people say is it just me or does it seem like blizzard is rushing.. well no shit, give them a break, wait till the games out decided whether or not you want to pay the 60$(not including tax) and if you dont like it then dont play, simple as that, but bitching about changes all day isnt going to change the game, i know someone will say ohh we've waited like 10 years and its a game that isnt anything like d2, i agree ive been waiting myself very long, but this is D3 and a wholeeeee new era, shit is bound to change, all im saying is go ahead hate blizzard but dont hate d3 cuz its not even out yet

Yea but blizzard north was the branch that made diablo. And they have been gone since 2005.

Yes I do hope endgame will keep me playing for a very long time. But with that being said, you've just been too hyped for too long. Just put it off your mind until the actual game comes out, your just ruining it for yourself with all these assumptions cause the game isn't going to be good for you with all these thoughts in your head.
All that old stuff has been ripped out theres nothing left. The cauldron the stone the cube. The companion scrolls. The runes. Its all gone or changed in a bad way.
