I wanted to take a moment to maybe counter a few people talking about white items now being 'useless'
While they don't fill in a particular niche in itemization, they do help balance the loot tables.
If Blizzard said they want x items to drop, the lowest denominator cannot be a blue item; that would screw everything up, because then the weakest possible item would be too powerful.
they would then have to arrange the item system so the blue items are 'useless' so more powerful items are proportionately more rare.
as far as making them unsalvagable, well... I think the salvaging value is only useful now because the beta is all we see. What about at level 60? will you really pick up all those white items to inevitably get common scraps? after act one or two, the time you spend picking up white items won't be worth it. Not for gold, not for salvaged items, not for anything!
tl;dr: White items are needed as a lowest denominator, and I'm guessing that nobody would pick them up for salvaging after act one or two anyhow.
Well their reasoning for removal is the dumbest shit ever.
They are trying to convince us going back to town is FUN. Oh my I hated it in D2, i'll it in D3. Who are they joking.
Might of seemed annoying but its the stuff like that, that makes the game addictive, its hard to explain but never having a full inventory defeats the purpose of having a limited inventory space, people like you probably like the way World of Warcraft is now, where you sit in town and dont really have to do much of any movement to do everything the game offers, its almost the same thing that D3 was gonna be which is you are out of town at all times and never go to it except to enter a game and leave a game, gaurentee the game will feel so much better with these changes. Like he says highs and lows are a good thing, he is exactly right as much as it might seem all highs would be great, but it makes it get boring like WoW real quick(how wow is now, not vanilla wow).

Being able to be out and killing for hours and hours straight was negating the fun elements. Just like a story arc has highs and lows, a game needs to promote those ups and downs through its mechanics.
What Bash is saying, if we play too long, its no good, therefore there should be forced pauses. They could just as well implemented the timer:
"You played 30 minutes, thats too much, you will be ported to town in 5...4...3...2"
Thats not smart if you ask me, such limitation shouldnt be in the first place, and different players have different playstyles. If I'm farming, I will HATE being forced to go back to town every half an hour or so, and thats leaving whites out. To reduce forced trips to town I would have to leave some Magic items on the ground too, and considering I'm farming for gold and crafting material, I would HATE to be forced to make such choice as I had to do in D2. At least in D2 gold was worthless, now it will be actually good currency, thus forcing us to leave money on the ground or to make frequent trips to town is a BAD design.
Speaking of the fun part, there is absolutely no fun element in being forced to teleport to town, neither in D2, nor in D3. Bash logic is on the level of: "Driving is fun, lets increase the fun by stopping at every gas station!" Would it still be fun to drive? Definitely not as much, it kills the fun to be forced to stop at every gas station instead per our choice.
Official Blizzard Quote:
As far as harming co-op, there's really no difference now. Before you'd say "WAIT UP" and everyone would have to stop while you examined each item and decided to sell, salvage, or keep it. In the best case scenario everyone would agree to stop and do this at the same time. It's no different than everyone agreeing to head back to town, and in fact it provides a more prominent, not to mention safe, pause point where everyone can take care of a few quick tasks, and then head back out.Say your friend's inventory is full, but yours isn't, well you both decide to TP and while he's going through his bag you have time to craft a few things, or alt+tab free of fear to read reddit or something. Whatever. It's not different to the co-op game because you had to stop before, and the benefits to being in town now are actually pretty substantial.
Absolutely not true, especially not in pugs. They wont be waiting for you, and either kick you for frequent trips or you'll be forced to leave a lot of loot on the ground.
Even speaking of friends, due to difference in loot collecting style and random drop rate, pretty much EVERY 10 minutes someone will be going to town.
Basing on Bash logic, it would look like this:
"10 mins are up, everyone to town!"
"10 mins are up, go to read reddit or something."
Again, I find it as a BAD design. Blizz designed this game for SO LONG, they're overthinking. Cauldron and Cube were brilliant ideas, and they threw it away by forcing us to do extra annoying tasks. I understand masochists will welcome this change, however VAST MAJORITY of players hate this change, and would prefer to have Cauldron and Cube - it should be up to us when to take a break, when to read reddit, or to visit town.
Cauldron and cube were horrible ideas, why even have town, why not just add crafting to your char and and illiminate it? As much as people might disagree but i do beleive that D3 would of been a flop if this wasnt changed, it enchances the expeirence of every drop, vs picking up everything and salvaging everything, with these changes you will only want to pick up items that are worth inventory slots to you. If you could play a released version of both patches, i gaurentee people would stick around 4x times longer on the game that it is gonna be vs prepatch.
Generally and speaking overall about the article and the changes involved::
It's a step backwards. Taking out more customization and cool looking effect received by the Mystic (remember, they are comparing the Mystic to Gem/Slots. Mystic has (had) dozens of possibly attributes you could choose from, plus they add cool effects to your armor; gems have a total of 4 attributes, and zero cool effects), forcing us to go back to town to sell and salvage items which takes us away from playing the game, making white items completely and utterly useless except for filling up your screen with text. To me it sounds like they are now making Diablo 2.5 instead of Diablo 3. Hey, it's still better than D2 I guess???
Well, I'm really glad they put this out. I've been frustrated by the lack of anything, for weeks at a time. I probably won't be following D3 as heavily now that this is out, seems like a bit of work do be done, and I'm still not in beta... but no biggie.
Glad to see alot of the changes, I always wondered about the whole townportal thing.
Yea, not sure whey they have whites keep dropping, if you don't want them... Well, that's not really true, it does add to the feel that you are getting more done, seeing all those items. I dunno, I'm kinda split, if it's anything like D2, later you don't even pickup magic items sometimes because they become so common... Then again later you don't see as many whites either (or maybe I just got really good at ignoring them).
Actual changes wise I don't think it really matters, the beta itself wasn't enough to have a strong enough grasp on all the balance and everything. Now that they have changed it all how do we compare it to what it was?
This is why I don't see why they bother trying to string us along without a release date with these changes, yes its good to see what the game will be like come release, what does it matter if we don't have a release yet, all this could change agian tomorrow making this stringing along just more PR bullshit.
Well its obvious that Blizzard really are messing with things that shouldnt be messing with. I also think that Blizzard all along knew they didn't want to release this game anytime soon. So what they did is made a release date, then eventually delay it (keep the hype going) then came out with a way to keep customers paying by coming out with this annual plan. This then gets people to keep paying for WoW which will allow them to release the expansion before Diablo 3, then finally d3 will come out where you paid your year worth for WoW and you get Diablo 3 for free! They obviously planned this out from the beginning. They need to show they were making money some how, so the annual plan helped them show investors that they will still bring in cash while trying to make diablo 3 perfect.
^^^ I think thats all true, and real, and maybe even hard for many to believe. I also think that now Blizzard has chose to keep the game in development they are now messing with the overall game. Its done, and I think they are making changes that shouldn't be done. I think that these changes shouldn't be happening considering these all came from the drawing board, which went through very long thinking to see if they will last. I wonder how much money they threw in the air since they totally just cut the Mystic astian outta the game. That had to be worth... at least $5,000 at least worth of work? I honestly have no idea but, id just throw it right there.
Another reason I wanted to support my educated guess, is that in the beginning Jay Wilson said so many times they do not want you going into town, or taking you away from the combat or action. They are totally going against what they always been saying and now, I just don't get what they are doing. I think they are getting to the point were you can only edited a game so much, eventually after so long your going to over think and start messing things up. Will I ever know if the game is messed up? Probably not, since I haven't played the full game. But to me, it seems like Blizzard is getting a bit psycho over some things within the game.
Anyways, in short words, I dont like the update. You messin with the game, THAT IS DONE.I don't know I've heard of games going back and changing things, or scraping things and from what I can remember in the past. Its doesn't work out that well. Star Wars Galaxies is a perfect example.
"Scrolls of Identification are no longer in the game" - I think this is the worst of all the things they messed up. Why would you even go half way about it. The fact you have the fucking scroll there makes it more real, realistic. Like no, its awesome that we must spend our ingame gold to buy scrolls to identify are items. Blizzard obviously never understood how life works. This just BUILDS TO THE BIG BANG! If you ever gotten high in your life, you will realize that the whole drive to your dealer, grab your drugs, drive back to your house, and then finally doing the drugs is the BIGGEST RUSH, maybe even closes to EVEN DOING THE DRUG. Why would you take out something that even players love. Yes, it could save inventory. But its the fact that you need something to indentify the item with. Like jeeze, whatever happen to the Open World MMOs like Star Wars Galaxies and Ultima Online, where it was actually cool to plant trees in front of your house. Shit like this, its just stuff people like. Its makes it more life-like. If you just take that item away, then its like 'oh I just have to right click to identify my items now'. Well fuck it, might as well scrap the whole system then. EITHER GO IN, OR DONT!
The #1 thing that made me sad was the removal of the Mystic. It looked as though she added a lot in terms of atmosphere and the foreshadowing aspect of Diablo 3's story.
Removing that element from the story just seems so bizarre :(. They had her background and everything. I really hope that the void she left is filled by new NPCs who provide the kind of dialogue she does. It makes me so sad to know that Diablo 3 will be losing so prominent a character.
