So I bought the game today because me and an OW buddy are looking for a new game to kill our time with and we've both enjoyed Borderlands. I have a few questions. How does leveling influence the first playthrough? Like if start playing when he doesn't and move though the campaign, does that affect anything? Would I be able to help him through the campaign if I went ahead if I joined his game? I know we basically need to complete the game once to open up adventure mode and stuff but I don't wanna leave him behind or anything. It seems I'll hit max level way before I finish the campaign, since we got to 20 and we're still in act one. I'm guessing that doesn't matter? Once you finish the campaign and open up the other modes, how does one start progression? Are there torments or whatever that are accessible to a basically fresh player?
Well I'm more concerned with campaign progression than anything really. If I go off on my own and move through without him his character will then behind in levels and in campaign but I'm guessing I could join his game and we'd just go through it again. I have no idea what seasonal or anything like that is. I know about Tadventure and hardcore mode, that's about it really.
You cannot do seasonal adventure, until you play through the campaign one time first either in non season or season. Also even though you get through campaign in soft core, you still have to do it again in hardcore to play adventure mode in hardcore. Hitting 60 lets you go above expert and join others games up to T6, you must be 70 to go above T6. There is a way around finishing the campaign without playing it all the way through it, but that involves finding someone who has gotten through the campaign. They invite you into the last battle of the ACT 5 campaign and you kill the last boss, this will open adventure for you even though you did not play through it yourself, but most people do not want to do this unless it is for hardcore and they already did it in soft core. i just did this on the PS4 and XBox for the first time and I forgot about all these limitations, having played on PC for 5 years. I didn't have any friends playing it on the PS4 or the XBox so I played through the campaign twice on both HC & norm, it was a lot of fun and it didn't take as long as I remember it taking on the PC.
Enjoy the campaign. That is the only real fun you are gonna have in this game. Then you will still have some fun getting your fist set and weapons. But ater that the game is just pure gringing to make the numbers slightly bigger.
The Quests in the Campaign are Global for the the session, meaning whoever joins the game will be on the same level regardless if they did that quest or not, and the accessible areas depend on the quest too, so if you play and he joins you then when he gets into your game he will have the same quest as you and if you join him you will have the same quest as him. You can always change what quest you want from the Menu outside as long as you unlocked it by progressing to it.
Just play and invite him whenever he gets online or go join him after he creates a game. Monster levels are usually at the level of the creator of the game, so maybe it would be a better idea if you create the game at the same quest that he was in and invite him, this way he will catch up faster to you with levels and you will still get loot and so will he.

Why complicate something as simple as joining his friend's game?

Well I have to play the campaign at least once lol
Your friend can just join ur quest or your game and it dosnt matter if hes under levled. etc.
when u 2 complete a quest in ur game he will get all old quest completed.
thats why u can look for someone to start a act5 last boss so u can go directly to adventuremode.
:):) ! sorry for bad english!
This is incorrect for consoles. From Reddit and from my own experience, this is true:
you DO need to beat campaign mode on a fresh account for adventure mode, even if you are only playing seasons!!
this is what I had to do to powerlevel a brand new account:
1) have them make a non-season character
2) beat Diablo in campaign mode to unlock Master difficulty
3) beat Malthael in campaign mode to unlock Adventure mode forever
4) now they can make a seasonal character
5) rifts in Master until 60
6) switch to torment (because it doesn't unlock until 60!) and level to 70
This is so for the consoles, not sure about the PC version, as I haven't leveled anyone on PC since last year.
Peace.
