I just thought about some thing when I was looking at the new follower page at the official website. Now I've played d2 before of course, but since this is the new Diablo 3, can someone kinda explain why Blizzard decided to bring these guys back into the game? Did they explained like why we need followers? Like did Blizzard prove that it will be a hard journal to get through the game if we don't have a follower. When I say hard, I mean, similar to Diablo 2, and the way their followers work within the game.
Honestly, I really don't understand why this is being brought into the game. I'm not thinking its a bad idea AT ALL. I'm just wondering what is their 'math' behind these guys. Like is there statics proving that players don't like to play alone? I probably would rather play with a follower, even if the game is too easy because of them.
Also, I was looking at the skill calculator on the d3 site, and I don't really understand it yet. What does it mean when a skill is "grayed" out? Are you only allowed to pick one skill each level? Its sorta weird how they setup this page, when your really not "calculating" anything, if you get what I mean.
Anyways, yeah, maybe someone can explain this concept to me. Like I don't have a problem with it, but just like as far as I know, they will just make the game easiler for you. Do they even hold items for you?
Followers were added to be placeholder fighters when players played single-player, but moreso to add more depth and responses to quests. The followers were designed with specific responses to all of the quests you undergo.

Oh, well heres my next question.... I'm pretty sure Blizzard is still promoting "Heroism" in Diablo 3. Doesn't adding followers take that away? Like that goes against their whole "hero" idea. Like having your character kill 8 enemies at once!
I dunno, but thats all I'm gunna say to go "back and forth" with this conversion, because now it would just be getting into a "what if" conversion.

The follower isn't a supplement for a poor character/player. Your strategy--indeed, the essence of a good hero--is seen in your follower's skills and equipment, and your choice of follower. Was Stonewall Jackson less of a hero for the South because he relegated most of the action--the killing--to lower-ranked men? No. His choices are what we remember him by, not how many enemies he shot.
But besides that, there's also the fact that we had mercenaries in Diablo II. I didn't see a problem with it then. Your mercenary didn't necessarily share your all-consuming desire to rid the world of the Primes--he/she came with you because you had the coin to hire him/her.

Orignally the followers in Diablo III weren't going to be end game viable, but because the followers were quite popular, Blizzard changed that. So, I believe they put them into the game in the first place, not just to add depth to the story, but also because many people like the idea.
Blizzard has said that if you play solo you won't NEED a follower, that they aren't designing the game to be that way. How they are going to do this, I'm uncertain, as the skills I've seen that the followers have are a really nice addition to any class. I think it would be silly not to have a follower if they can give you buffs. Who would say no to buffs?!
And like Verity has already said, you only choose one skill per tier on the calculator. Every time you're able to pick an ability, you have to choose carefully between the two skills because you can't have both. I think this is a great idea, so you actually have to think about your decision because you can't get both skills on a tier.
Every Hero needs a sidekick, I hope you can name them.... I'll have a Enchantress called Sooki, cuz she is MINE!
I doubt you can name them, since they already have names (even though they run around with the name "Templar" in the beta anyway...). But I was also wishing we could name them as well. >.>
I dunno I kind of liked having a dude fight with me back in D2, it brought a whole new level of bro-time in the game.
Not only that but now D3 followers are more viable and have a decent/interesting backstory I guarantee I will have alot of fun killing demons with my bro-follower.

There is no "math" behind it. They are catering to fans and feedback.
Originally Followers were more of a story piece than something for us to "use". They added some items and customization to them to add a little fun because, who DOESN'T like customizing stuff?
They were never meant to be used in "end game" content (passed Normal). People really loved them so Blizzard listened to them.
They will not be mandatory to solo anything or Inferno but they are there as something extra to customize and min/max if you're into that sort of thing (min/maxing and customization really is the heart of Diablo end game).
i see a few people saying there not required, while that is true if you read the healing/guarding power of the templar you'll think twice before getting rid of him. at least in the templar's case, with his added abilities you could pretty much change your entire build around his build, such as getting rid of your CC or healing spells because he will do enough for you. if someone wants to try inferno/hell without a follower for extra difficulty ok, but not choosing a follower that is THIS powerful for any other reason is insane for solo playing.

followers this powerful will in turn give more customization overall, but it might hinder the whole coop advantage to an extent given that some of the follower's end skills are just too good for classes overall, so a group of players may be at an disadvantage in terms of individual performance with party buffs/passives against a group with followers instead of players.
Afterall diablo is a gear game and efficiency is not as important according to the devs
solo survival would be more interesting than to have this "safety net" but if i am to lose performance because of it i'll be forced to use them anyway
i do wonder if the drops aren't affected by having followers given that in a regular party everyone gets different loot, followers don't get extra loot, so that would prove to be a disadvantage in the overall party drops
i dont quite understand. are you implying you can use followers in co op? because you cant. followers are solo-only. and no drops are not effected by followers.

Yes, you only chose one of the two skills per tier. They can be respecced in town for a gold fee.
No they can't hold items for you except the ones that they can equip (Weapons, rings, amulets and respective follower's unique item).

Bro-time with your bro-follower, that's awesome!

Bro-mance in Diablo 3, hell yes!
I'm going to name my templar Eric Northman and he is going to have happy time with your enchantress
I think they put followers in d3 so that a heap of d2 players wouldn't qq
I think they gave us followers so that we can have RP relationship plot-lines. Mostly involving nocturnal bi-sexual immortals. I'M SO EXCITED!
