So I'm sure most people have already decided their first class. i was set on the WD, but after using the skill calc for all 5 classes over and over to see what i could make. i changed my mind to the wizard. because whatever class i make first i want to be the breadwinner of my team. so all my initial gold + initial starting gear for alts, and first play through of the game so its easier with the next characters i make. after making countless builds and watching playthroughs of all classes. the Wizard is hands down the best at damage and surviving. watching Force's play through he did the entire beta LITERALLY 25 minutes LESS then the other 4 classes. AND he spent time messing around with spells and such... he got a bit luckier with the quests and finding things BUT no way that would shave off 25 min. he didn't even rush through and did it in around 40 min. VS other classes taking an hour+. also he died on the barb. the others killed so much slower. and implementing the wpn dmg % for the wizard will only make it even easier. but I'm sure once all the gameplay video's come out after the major beta patch it MAY be different. but i honestly don't think so.
i know a lot of people want to really take it slow and enjoy the Lore and stuff, but personally the story doesn't mean much to me, i just love the gameplay and destroying things with crazy builds i make. just like in D2 the wizard will be the best first character to make (IMHO) and be a ton of fun too, unlike D2 a melee wizard is perfectly viable without amazing gear, if not even super OP (see here http://www.diablofans.com/topic/31148-legit-melee-wizard-build/page__p__695723__fromsearch__1#entry695723) all you have to do is get a few alabaster runes from act 2 and it has the potential to work great and be unstoppable right off the bat without super gear like you had to have in D2.
so thats my 2 cents on what class I'm picking and why. now pls don't comment saying "enjoy the game! I'm gonna go slow..". let me know what class YOUR choosing first and some reasons why.
I will focus on these two characters first and as time passes I will pick up the rest, although I'm not too hyped about the remaining 3 classes.
you didn't give any reasons why :/. also why is that?
Well I always play as the Barbarian so that's a given, as for the Witch Doctor it looks to be the most enjoyable class by far from what I've seen. The Demon Hunter just looks extremely boring to me so I doubt I'll play it much, the same with the Monk, the Wizard looks interesting but weak right now, but I'll definitely put some time into the class once the game has been out for awhile.

The question isn't why do I kill. The question is, why I don't kill everybody.

hmmm well after what i wrote and seeing beta playthroughs of the wizard i sincerely doubt anyone would think the wizard looks weak in the least. lol but ok. ya I'm not a fan of ranged shooters like the demon hunter/amazon. idk i just hate shooting things like guns...
At first it was going to be a Monk. The Assassin was my favorite class from D2 with the charge/finishing moves and the Monk was the closest thing to that. However, after seeing the changes they made to the Demon Hunter, I think I will have to go with that. It looked really boring in the beta videos I have seen, but with the changes that were made in the Skill Calculator it seems like it will be a lot more engaging to play (plus, they get ferrets, so cute!). Of course, if the Demon Hunter still looks boring with the new patch footage, I will change back to Monk.
I am thinking long term. I want to focus on one character. A PvE powerhouse with some fun mechanics in PvP. Healing is my thing in games that offer a divide of tank/healer/dps but Arpg's don't feature these conventions.
I also usually play a ranged character but I don't like the Demon-Hunter - it just doesn't excite me.
I really love the look of the monk animations and the way he fights but the magic casters have the whole ranged bonus thing (which is typically easier to start with as you can kite mobs etc).
I honestly feel like Monk would be the most fun in PvP but that really isn't something I am too bothered with...
I don't know... it is a tough one for me as I want my first character to be the one I get through the entire game with from start to finish.
I am also unsure which artisan to focus on first...
So much indecision recently... :\
well maybe talking it out would help? if i may be so bold as to help you decide.
if your not really into melee all that much compared to ranged, regardless of the class mechanics it should NOT be your first choice, i think.
as for having the most diversity in viable builds that differ id say the wizard wins over the WD, although my opinion is bias i do not make any decision lightly. I've spent countless hours thinking and theory crafting and watching videos (yes i have no life, i eat sleep and breath D3). the WD WAS my number 1, because of pets making him THE easiest class to breeze through the game solo. he will be my 2nd choice now. why? because after theory crafting with the wizard i realized his potential for insane damage in soooo many types of builds. i created a build (http://www.diablofans.com/topic/31261-raging-storm-wizard/page__p__697190__fromsearch__1#entry697190) which you just replace the top main skill with ANYTHING and its spammable infinitely with almost no downtime. its pretty nuts. AND my melee wizard build i posted in the OP seems insanely over powered and completely viable in the beginning of the game while leveling. so you can melee IF you want OR pick any skill you like and have the ability to spam it freely or spam 1-2 diff skills with tons of survivability.
obviously in survivability the WD always wins. with 5 minions tanking and possibly constantly healing you or taking most of your dmg (depending on rune) and his ability to slow/block with zombie wall its no contest. this may be TOO easy, and make it sort of less fun in a sense, the wizard will have more situations where you have to kite (IF you choose caster instead of melee) as the WD you will just plow through anything without worry. but kill slower. so do you want to freely plow slowly OR cast insane dmg with a higher chance of death?
i will likely play each class for a couple of hours before deciding, i just still can't get a feel for the classes no matter how many videos i watch, its just not the same. Still, im definitely leaning towards wizard (ever since BG2 i can't not play mages..), if not him as my main then probably barbarian, i will be going dual wield attack speed with super quick weapons, preferably with like poison or a groovy on-hit effect. i want diablo

I'm leaning on the Demon Hunter first, cause I think it will be the less played class and seems like it can be a lot fun if your into the whole kiting thing. They seem kinda annoying at times in all the beta footage I've seen but waiting on the newest change to hit beta, seems like they will make the class a lot more enjoyable and constant shooting instead of waiting on hatred. And a lot of the cool discipline cost spells(that actually do dmg) come at higher levels so that will open up another resource.
2nd/Alt will be a Monk, I want a melee class but not a Bar so that leaves me with one choice. And watching the pvp vid of the Monk just flying back and forth looks pretty damn amazing. And I think the hunter may suck in PVP so I want a solid class I can play in pvp which is looking like the Monk for me.

i think DH is gonna be the class that will be able to survive any situation easily if the player is good/quick enough. I mean all the classes are supposed to be like that of course, i just mean with her vaulting around and stuff i can imagine some dastardly DH's owning it up endgame, pvp and pve

Well that is exactly my problem. I am a veteran of Arpgs. Having finished D1/D2 several times over as well as done Hardcore runs of others like Titan Quest + exp. and some of the team based ones like NWN / BG2 etc. This genre is my gaming forte as it were.
I usually play 2 types of archtypes. Bow users (preferably pet based) or Healers in some manner.
The problem with D3 is that I do not like the DH for personal reasons (design, look, feel etc etc etc).
So it means the class I usually fall back on is now split between the three mentioned.
1: The pet route is the WD but of course it seems like the easiest and probably most boring of the bunch
2: A HP-regen Monk of sorts. Gives me the healing versatility but is a Melee class which I tend not play.
3: A ranged nuker to be found in the Wizard.
In PvE all three will perform well but the two ranged are probably the easiest to use due to dodging / ranged. In PvP, I really feel like a Monk is going to be the best character because of the group benifits they bring. Likewise as a wizard I feel like you will just be CCed / nuked a lot because people know what they can do if left to run loose.
But PvP isn't an overall concern; it is just something to think about whilst I am in Inferno.
so.... still no closer to choosing any of the three? i still say not monk, ruled out for the melee your not fond of. and the WD will be much like a summoning necro with decent spells. never being touched but actually able to launch nukes on enemies therefor it'll get boring as you are never in harms way so your never actually "worried" even in inferno, if your pets still distract the majority of mobs it still won't be nearly as intense as the wizard. i don't think you would enjoy the WD as much, i think you'll play him then around lvl 30 your like "wow i haven't been hit once in 25 levels.... *bored* wizard it is!"
Main: Barbarian - I always enjoy playing tanky DPS characters, where I can dish out a ton of damage but also be able to withstand a beating.
Alt 1: Witchdoctor - Looks like the most interesting out of the rest due to the variability of spells, summons, etc.
Alt 2: Undecided - I will most likely play the other 3 classes through normal mode before deciding which I want to level next. None seem to stand out above the rest in terms of sparking my interest. If one is better than another for MF (and I don't use my barb for this) then I will most likely level that character next.
Female Monk, always preferred melee characters to casting characters. Didn't choose the Barb cause most people will choose him, and I always choose the underdog/less preferred one. And the female monk looks hawt with her pixie hair cut!
I'll eventually play them all, but i'll most likely start with wizard then play witch doctor. As for why, i've always been fond of clothies and casters.
I'm going to play the Demon Hunter to start with because it appears to be the least popular class. I've always found that the least played class is the most profitable to play for several reasons.
First off, when people realize that you fit a niche that they need filled, you're always in demand.
Second, when you find gear for the most popular class you can sell it for a premium, while conversely gear for your class is significantly less expensive because there is less demand.
Third the least popular classes are often boosted and improved, while the most popular classes are more likely to be nerfed or otherwise subverted. Starting with the least popular class increases the likelihood of your class getting better in the future making it even easier to do stuff.
Lastly, I just like the Demon Hunter motif and think it will be a lot of fun. I mean, all the classes are demon hunters, so why not play the actual Demon Hunter? The female one of course, to me the male one sounds kinda goofy.
If your goal is to provide resources for future playthroughs with other classes, pick the least popular classes, if your goal is to power thru content and figure out how to rush, then by all means, pick Wizard or something like that.
As an aside, for Force's videos, comparing his first barb run to anything else is silly. Each class he played had better gear to start than the class before. After the Barb he always loaded each class up with all kinds of goodies from previous runs, making them insanely more powerful.

I really hope so, DONT KILL ME but I hope its not like the BC/Lich King WOW hunter when you had to play 100 times better than any other class to accomplish the same shit. It does seem like the one class where there will be a clear difference of a good and bad DH. I also think the WD and Wizard will be like that also. The monk and barb to a lesser degree.

im comparing the wizard's play through to the rest, NOT the barbarians. also the items he gave his characters made it a bit easier to level up they were not insanely over powered starting items except for the WD's one that gave him infinite mana at lvl 1. which the WD play through was extremely slow. so the wizard did not have "insane" starting gear and his spells are not changed to be based off % wpn dmg yet so therefor they helped him the LEAST out of all 4 classes that got gear.
I gonna roll a demonhunter first, because I loved assassins and amazons in d2. I also hope to reveal that demonhunters will be awesome in lvl 60 pvp, thats why I have to tryout him/her first. You also will play better pvp with the class you're used to under normal circumstances.
