That bloody room filled with corpses and with people going around telling you it was a giant demon, your wild imagination made the encounter even more fearsome. And thus many had nightmares about the first encounter of the Butcher..
The weapons from the butcher returns in both Diablo 2 and Diablo 3, but what about the Butcher himself? Do you think he will return?
I don't remember much from the first Diablo, it's been years since I've played it, but as soon as I looked at that screenshot I remembered quite clearly the Butcher. Mmmm... so much blood...
If they didn't bring him back in DII, I don't think they'd bring him back in the third game. If they do though, they better put just as much carnage in as there was in the first game.

They didn't bring The Butcher back in D2 they also didn't bring back the Skeleton King in D2... The Skeleton King is now a Mini Boss in the first act... Who knows what we'll see for the last 2/3's of Act 1.
I think they could bring him back, he was freaking scary the first time you played through the game, open this door and hear "AHHHH FRESH MEAT!" your like "wtf?" then see this bloodied hellspawn ogre looking thing making a beeline right to you. You try to fight back but he's hitting too hard, so you turn to flee (slow walking lol) but can't get away cause the butcher has a knockback ability ...
Great times, really enjoyed him and viewing that gruesome room +1 Blizz, now bring back that gorey room in true 1080P HD please !

I don't remember much about the first game, so I didn't remember this. Thanks for pointing this out, so I guess they could do anything (well, when couldn't they do anything anyway?).
I certainly hope so but I would think not. A comeback in D3 would maybe take away from some of the mystique of the classic Butcher encounter in Diablo. Here's a gruesome 4 second "cutscene" that never made it into the retail launch.
I remember the first time I encountered the butcher. I was terrified to open the door to his room. Then when I finally did and he cried out his iconic line, I started running around the (ingame) room screaming (in the real life room) like a little ninny
If they DO have him in Diablo 3, I sincerely hope that it's a completely unexpected surprise. I think it would be terribly difficult to live up to that original experience and the only way they could do it (or come close at least) would be if we had no idea, until he showed up on our screen.
I'd like to see him and Zhar the Mad. Since the Fallen Star revived the skeleton king I wouldn't be surprised to see a bunch more old enemies back. Maybe even have a Gharbad the Weak quest xD.
Other possibilities could be Lochdanon's cursed form and Lazurus. Obviously the entire game isn't gonna be in the cathedral, so maybe 1 or 2 more of the old enemies could return after the skeleton king. I think they redid the entire cathedral too. So you could argue they passed the butcher already. But the structure of the first third of the game, really doesn't represent what it looked like in Diablo 1 at all. Nor is it impossible for him to move his little meat house somewhere else.
I think they would bring him back. They made a reference to him in Warcraft 3 Frozen Throne because he was so famous. By their humor they just would bring him back XD.

Like being killed over and over again in Diablo?
Lore would be awesome!

Still pretty disturbing despite the dated graphics.

Unless they just kept him out of the beta for surprise purposes.
Since he died, and went whereever, he could be a resurrected miniboss in act 4 or act 6 (expansion). Just say'n..

Possibly, but I think that's lame.
If he is in the game, he had better be in that same awesome room on the same floor of the Cathedral.
I need a source if there is a statement.
