I was wondering if there's a button to pick up everything... I'm pretty sure there isn't, since i've been watching streams, but if we have a portable vendoring item, then it wouldn't make sense to not have a button where we can pick up all of the items surrounding us. I don't want to click at every single item i see on the ground if i want to pick it up. I know it sounds like i'm lazy, which i partially am, but it would be a really useful button. The situation is similar to picking up gold. There's no reason why we don't want to pick up the gold, and that's exactly why they made gold auto pick-up. Hey, at least i'm not asking for them to make all items auto pick-up, because that would then be ridiculous.
It's either that or... make a viewing item option where you can toggle on and off white items, because i dont want to be looking at a lot of white items on the ground at ... like NM, HELL, or higher up difficulties, where i really have no use for them, other than to salvage... or sell for gold, which then brings us back to the issue of me having to pick up every single item with each click. Anyone else agrees with this? Or i'm free to hear what others might have to say about this as well.
This exists in some games (Dungeon Siege i think). Usually I'd find this a bad idea. But there are a few reasons why this would be a welcome addition in D3. First of all, your drops are personal, so you can't just grab everything from other players. And secondly, there are actually reasons for picking up everything (sell/salvage).
The disadvantage would be that you can just go around pressing that button, and then salvage everything in your inventory. That kinda takes away from selecting which items would be worth selling/salvaging. Also, imaging after a boss drop, you'd just always press that button without even looking what dropped, so the items might as well have appeared right in your inventory. It kinda takes away from looking what dropped, pickung up the uniques first, then checking the other stuff to see if there's something valuable.
So well I could understand them not introducing such a function, but I'd use it if it existed. They won't introduce it though: there are scrolls of companion, which create a little creature picking up gold for you. Also, if I'm not mistaken, there's a stat that increases your gold pickup range. If you could jsut pick up everything in a certain radius around you, both would be rendered obsolete.

I do agree that it does take away from some of the gameplay experience of sorting out what and what not to pick up, but as for the scrolls of companion, I did not know that That was their function in the game. I have noticed them, I was wondering why... D3's Dev put in a pet system, or in this case companion system. Now it makes more sense. And now that i know this, I take back what i said about the button to pick up everything, because before i thought the function of auto picking up gold was... well given, and not something you had to acquire, and can improve.
Thanks for clearing up this little problem I had =].

You pick up gold automatically, but only when you run right over it. The companions run around you and pick up the leftovers
But what I meant was this: in Dungeon Siege, when you press the button, your character will run from one item to the other and pick them up. This is the only way such buttons work: if you'd only pick up the item(s) right underneath your feet, it would become more tedious (right click to move, press button to pick up, right click to move... instead of just left clicking on the item you want to pick up). So if the introduced the button in a useful way (= your char runs around picking up everything in the vicinity), it would interfere with the companion system.
If I recall correctly (do not quote me on this), Jay Wilson (or was it Bashiok?) himself said they woulnd't add anything that automatically picks up items, because they tried it but it didn't "feel" right as it does with gold. Can't recall from where I got this.
Personally, I wouldn't like it. I like using my mouse click as the physical representation of "picking" a huge halberd or a plate mail.
It was Jay Wilson, yes. He said choosing which items to pick up is part of the feel for Diablo. After all, I play D2 on Players 8 beginning to end and some people have no idea how many white items drop on Nightmare and Hell. It's literally a "nightmare" and a "hell" if I automatically picked up those items. I assume many people would support me on this.
You will sell all the white stuff for tens of gold and salvage it for materials that you probably have thousands of. Trust me, the picking up every single item with a button things will get you bored very fast.
About the splash screen. How does it not add to the feeling? You leap with your barb in the middle of 20+ mobs, shockwave and whirlwind and a massage displays "MASSACRE - you killed 28 enemies, NEW RECORD". When was Diablo not about killing a lot of mobs? You simply could never keep track of just how many it was.
Quest tracking is there because unlike D2 you won't be keeping track of a maximum of 2 quests, which you know you will inevitably come by as you slaughter your way to the next zone.
People are going off-topic, it's a thread about looting and not about massacre screen.
As for the topic, I see no reason why there shouldn't be a button to loot everything close by. Mostly as people pointed out because we can salvage/sell straight from our inventory. I know I will feel really annoyed after a while. So as to make people have to live in both worlds, once you completed the game atleast one time you should be able to enable auto looting or a button to automatically loot everything close to you.
At one point JAy said that they didn't want it because the decision to pick up specific loot or not is a part of Diablo, so even if you will decide to pick up everything, they want that to be an actual decision you make on an individual item basis.
Maybe silly, but I don't think I want an auto-item-pickup button, even if I plan to get everything... it's just not right for Diablo in my opinion...
Gold is a constant pain and all of us who played the previous games know that. As for normal items we would just skip over them if we didnt want them. I don't want a auto pickup button for all items, it s not that out of the way to pick things up. but i do like the companion scrolls for gold, now i don't need to constant walk around to pick up every coin.

Went outside today, the graphics were ok. But the gameplay sucked

Also taking the time to pick stuff up helps your regen... Sorry Barbs
I think that picking up loot is part of the game that we enjoy. The excitement of seeing a blue or purple or orange, or gold, or mauve or whatever the hell the colors are for cool stuff, wouldn't be there if all the stuff goes straight to your inventory and you only see if for the split second before you melt it down for scraps. While it would be "more efficient" to have a system like that in place, games are supposed to be fun, not efficient. The card game war could be played most efficiently by flipping a coin to determine the outcome of the game, but where's the fun in that?
I was about to make a post disagreeing, that this would take away from the some of the excitment from actually picking up items. And while I do think that is the case, I can't think of a reason why having a toggle for it would be a bad thing.
For me, I will be picking everything up that drops. Not one thing will be left sitting on the ground (if I can help it). For this reason I'll use the always on setting for item names. My Current plan is to sell half of what I pick up and salvage the other half. If it turns out you need more salvage materials, or more gold, I'll adjust.
