you can rule out diablo GO. pokemon was a major success due to its novelty, how would another game with a much smaller fanbase fare?
you can rule out world of diablo. why threaten the big wave legion is swimming on top now?
you can rule out diablo 2 hd as a serious game from which they expect that you sink many hours into it. they might brush it up a bit, but they won't compete with their own rpg game. also: no d2 hd without some major gameplay changes. i cannot tolerate that archaic gameplay in this day and age.
you can rule out anything with the name diablo, unless it is a 4 or an expansion. the name just doesn't have a big ring to it right now.
what does that leave us with? expansion, 4. announcing the 4 while the 3 is still hot (it is not that old nor is it fair to abort it in such a manner) seems impossible, if 4 is an arpg too. but why make a 4 then? it can only be an expansion, which should overhaul every mechanic in this game. loot 3.0, fleshed out follower system, complete revamp of that awful paragon system, meaningful seasons, randomness in this dull grind game (can't bring myself to grind three 65 gems for the journey while legion is installed. really.) and finally some high-res textures for the player characters. it isn't 2005 anymore.

This could not be further from the truth. Similar games can easily hold a market, especially from the same company.
Further, a game such as "world of diablo" would not really be like WoW in terms of raids etc.... All it would really be is what we have now, with towns to trade in, reputations to earn, etc.... but it would not be this massively dynamic world like WoW is.
Well the last job available for the new Diablo project on Blizzard Careers is for the Game Director. This is the home stretch for their new team. In my mind they will have a little somethin' somethin' to show at Blizzcon. If not a build then concept art, direction of new game. You don't post over 15 new critical jobs for an expansion. This will be a entirely new game people.
Question is; will it be shown this year or not?
This is just opinion of course. Could be anything, but that's what I "think" is happening.

since the "world of" turned warcraft into something which could be explored via third person with an avatar in a persistent landscape, one would expect the same from diablo when they say "world of diablo". you lose the fixed iso perspective and move freely like in WoW, you make a massive persistent world and drop some meaningful content in it. after you reach some max level, you always want to kill something bigger. that would be where bosses come into play and where you would need a few more people.
but you want none of that. you want the grindy part (reputations), trade (which would be interesting in a mmo environment) and obviously the setting. you won't like raids or a massive dynamic world. so basically, you want a smaller diablo and still qualify for the mmo moniker. yeah, that won't happen.
...Maybe a live movie is in the works or something similar ...
It would be almost as bad as some mobile game
Sorry but for "Diablo fans “are going to lose their shit” in 2016" i expect way more then some new patch for D3/D2hd remake (wasnt it already announced in like 2015?) especially with Lost ark/Lneage Ethernal around the corner...
Given the info we have, i'm completely clueless at his point. Multiple occasions for an expansion for D3 have passed with literally ZERO news, so if i have to imagine something about the future of D3 i think they will reveal some sort of big-ish patch with a revamped paragon system and maybe something else than GRs to progress with a character (not tied to ladders). Or better it's what i hope for without going too high with expectations.
Other than that i don't know. Given the lore and story of Diablo, it makes sense for a game with an environment like Dark Souls/Bloodborne due to the grimdark setting. Also the cliffangher we have now about Nephalem being so strong and easily corruptable can open up some sort of two-factions environment that opens up to PvP, while all Nephalems can fight together both Angels and Demons to protect Sanctuary.
Overall i think it's a good setting that covers both single (becomes like a Skyrim/DS) and multiplayer (MMO or co-op) options. Combat/gearing would need to have a MAJOR role howwever, since they're the trademarks of a Diablo game.
But in the end, i really expect nothing but some sort of "meh" things like a retrospective due to teh anniversary of the franchise and while D2HD would be nice, it won't be anything relevant due to its archaich gameplay system which will be appealing only for a small subset of players.
Your posts are always utterly insightful Bagstone and I agree with 99% of what you said about the unlikelihood of D3X2 and D3mobile.
However in my opinion, the Diablo story and franchise is far from over. The fact that they're hiring new employees that "think there are countless stories left to tell in the Diablo universe" makes me think otherwise. Not to mention the end of Reaper of Souls left several possibilities and hints up in the air and on a massive cliffhanger.
I think it would be really cool to start a Diablo MMO where Diablo I started. All the awesome lore is there. They just need to put a nice dress on it for the party.
I agree. Definitely no mobile only game no D3x2 (why hire an all new staff?). I can see D2HD for the exact reason you stated (Could be a filler for a brand new project if it is true that Blizzard has allowed the staff to work on remakes in there own time. That would require the development to be near completion. Given the SCHD remake rumor and how it has been worked on by the staff no reason a D2HD remake is not in the same situation) and definitely a new project.
On the mobile portion I think they may try to incorporate the game with some mobile features similar to what WoW: Legion did with the Legion Companion. Ignoring mobile is no longer an option more and more people are there phones. Maybe they will add a feature rich app to go with a brand new diablo. I would imagine being able to do simple task and being rewarded for it. Maybe mobile only cosmetics or what not.
My ideas aside I would put my money on a "Legion Companion app" but for a new Diablo game.
I could see them hiring a new staff if they decide they want to take a completely new direction but finish the current story.
In fact, if we do get news of Xpac 2, it is possible it releases shortly after announced, much like new wings in Hearthstone were, or surprise open overwatch beta access, etc..... Not saying December or January, but a February or March release could be possible if all the design and concept work was already done by the old crew before they moved on or if the new crew has a better grasp of how to make said concept successful.
I have thought about that to a complete rework of the current game. I just don't think they would invest all the resources into to fixing a current game when going in a completely new direction is better for the brand.
With the patches they have been releasing it was clear they had a second expansion. I just think they failed to reinvent the game and Blizzard felt that a new game is in order.
It is all speculation at this point so who knows what could be. We can speculate all we want but Blizzcon will be the answers (hopefully)
My response to this thread was obviously tongue in cheek. I'm trying to downplay my own expectations as much as possible to either a) not be so entirely disappointed by whatever potential asinine decision blizz has up their sleeve regarding this IP or be absolutely delighted at whatever interesting and no doubt fully focused upon prospect blizz has looming over the horizon.
As long as newbs like you try to troll the topic, it is very obvious it has a future. Because even people that do not give a rats arse about the franchise sit and talk about it lmfao.

expectations here are high as f##k...
People are gonna get so disappointed...
"Do you guys not have phones?"
I would bet anyone here 100 dollars Diablo 4 is being announced.

You're a wizard Harry.....
I know what will happen at Blizzcon.
The Diablo booth will be bigger than the toilet area this time.
The rest are just speculations!
My D3 armory

Perhaps we are hyping ourselves up too much. Maybe a live movie is in the works or something similar, but I do hope there's an expansion on the way!
Blizz earned 300 millions on Warcraft movie across the globe. So yeah, might be something.

My money is on a fighting game in the Diablo universe. Something like Mortal Kombat i mean.
Either that or something 3rd person action like a God of war game but with multiplayer or some shit.
It would be almost as bad as some mobile game

paragon grinding is long time OUT OF CONTROL imho and leaderboards are more like a "no-life check". So if we see some Paragon 3.0 it will be cool.
