I thought that Blizz said they were doing away with MF, and that drops would be such that you wouldn't just go boss hunting and skipping the rest of the content. I'm in the F&F Beta, and there's MF all over the place sadly, so once again I'm trading off (the admittedly unnecessary) good stats for MF. Also, bosses still seem to drop a lot more and a lot better loot than even yellow "mini-boss" creatures, so I'm not sure how that will push people not to just run the last bit of each section. The only reason I can find to run other sections is for crafting papers, and even then, at least in this first part, they are far more common at the end near the boss.
So... when did they change their mind on the direction or am I missing something?

You're missing something. This isn't inferno. In Inferno difficulty all mobs will be balanced out for drops, prior to that it's going to slowly ramp up with later mobs giving you better loot. So for the Beta, absolutely, once you've got yourself up to max level, there's no reason to farm the early parts. Just like when you're level 60, but not quite geared for Inferno you'll go to Act IV Hell to get more items, not Act I Normal.
I'm also a bit confused about the whole MF deal. I remember that some months ago they were talking about the choice of MF was not to be made vs the choice of more "killing power", but when I look around there seems to be a lot of MF affixes which could instead be "fighting" stats if another affix was rolled so I don't know but it seems they have gone for something more similar to D2.
I'm fine with that as long as they don't overdo it and balance it in a way that some classes desperately needs the "fighting" stats over MF to be comparable in "killing power" (as in D2).

I have a feeling that mf will be plentiful on lower level items to help you with finding better gear initially, but higher end gear won't have as much mf on it. That way you will use mf stuff until you actually find good items; but when you have to decide between a lvl 40 legendary and a lvl 12 "+25% mf" it's really no contest.

I remember blizz saying the same thing about MF. To compensate maybe we get an extra affix with mf gear. Example: meh sword = 2 affixes of damage. meh sword+1 = 2 affixes of damage 1 affix of mf.
Hopefully then if you do find gear with MF its actually better than a non MF weapon since it has the bonus MF affix... but I doubt we'll be so lucky that way.

Playing Diablo since 97. I know nothing and having nothing good to say, I be a troll.
Blizz said they wanted people to have to give up on other stats to have MF. They essentially accomplished this by having all characters be more gear based. In d2 you could just roll a dirty Meteorb/Blizz sorc and not really require any gear other than MF. Whereas in D3 the wizard will rely more on gear, with spells that do damage based on weapon damage, and +attack giving overall damage increase to all spells.
The boss does have a chance to get better gear but at the same time it will be more difficult and likely slower to kill. Also do not forget we do have the option of using Artisans to make gear as well. How well they do for crafting gear for Infernal remains to be seen but from what I have seen in the streams that the crafts were better than what dropped.

No I think your missing something, what hes trying to say is that the bosses drop better gear. Unless you can confirm that bosses in inferno drop no more gear than regular inferno mobs, than there is no reason why people won't stack mf and rush to inferno bosses.

@Upgradez I could've faceplanted on the keyboard and still killed everything in act 1.

Ummm...I can't confirm it, but Jay Wilson has confirmed it a number of times. Bosses after you kill them the first time apparently don't drop loot any better than what you can get off of anything else, sure they have a higher chance to drop an item than a fallen, but they also take 50 times longer to kill, so there's that tradeoff. Blizzard has explicitly said they are going to balance things to encourage complete runthroughs and wandering around wherever you want, not boss farming.

Yeah, no. You're definitely missing the something. The whole point of inferno is to make all monsters as equal as possible across the board to encourage running whole areas instead of just bosses. Obviously, even in inferno, killing one boss will net better loot than 1 normal monster, but in the time that it takes to get to and kill that one boss, I could run a huge number of mobs, including whatever champions and whatnot spawn, and get way more stuff.
Most likely, the most popular runs will be something akin to the Diablo/Baal runs in D2 where, instead of the best char teleing to the boss, everyone just runs on foot, killing everything on the way, and ending with a boss kill. I hope they add some incentive, though, to make it so people will want to run entire acts, or maybe the entire game from act I-IV on inferno, that would really be awesome.

Maybe once you complete all of the quests in inferno, they reset and bosses can drop better loot again.

That would be a great way to make people want to play the entire thing over again, permit resetting of the bosses...I like this idea! I mean it might need to be tweaked slightly, but I think it's a pretty good thought!
maybe once you kill and loot uber goblin item off of a randomly scripted goblin in each act of inferno, you can then use their magical skills to summon a one-time portal that opens to a unicorn universe

I think you are on to something; those goblins do open portals (you can't click I dont think) and the lore says somethi g like it's a portal to gheeds realm ( I think it says gheeds) maybe the insentive is to kill every one of them like you said, then an uber goblin appears with a special portal
I imagine that balancing all the item drops and such hasn't been tweaked yet and so the items that drop right now are actually fairly set (I know some of the legendaries that are dropping are all dropping in the same spot). So I'm pretty sure this is just a temporary situation. I'm fairly confident in their previous statements on the matter.

I never really understood magic finding in D2 well. Sometimes I had tons of +% MF and after a dozen drops still wouldn't get what I wanted. Sometimes I'd get it on my first boss run
