Now that the F&F Beta has been out for a few days, I wanted to see what people think about the graphics. We have obviously seen some previous footage and screenshots, but it's never quite the same thing as the actual game.
Generally I guess I am positively surprised by some things, while disappointed by others. For instance, the lighting effects seem really nice. However, something that I can't get over is how grainy the textures are. They don't feel crisp or clear, but as if somebody was playing with a lower resolution.
Now, I'm not in the beta myself, so this is only from the 1080 videos. Any thoughts or comments on this? I just wanted to see how people felt about it. Anyone else notice the textures or have other things they do or do not like?
Moreover, do you guys think there will be any improvements to the graphics or are they pretty much done?
The 1080p videos that are available on youtube are probably not true 1080. Im sure the game gonna look better and less "grainy" when you actually play it on highest settings.
Other than that I like what I've seen so far, definitely a good balance between realistic and "cartoony."
Yeah, I like the balance. I wish it'd be a little bit darker in terms of the theme though. I mean D2 was right out nasty. Shredded bodies and torture racks with limbs still hanging on them all over the game. It was always very depressing. Now the graphics made it so you couldn't always make it out; but if you stopped and thought about it... it was rather creepy... I hope that some of the later levels will incorporate that darkness. However, considering the current esrb ratings, I doubt it.
this ^^^. They've stated they want to have alot more graphics options in before release. and FSAA has not been activated yet but will be later on. AA will help ALOT with smoothing out edges and making the game look less grainy.

I think part of the issue is also the style that developers have gone for in Diablo III. They have stated they are going for an environment that is more of a painting style. Personally, I love this style, but can certainly understand it is not everybody's cup to tea. I think this combined with the less than perfect feeds are causing the perception of smudged environment.
Wow, I didn't actually know that the Anti-aliasing wasn't in the game yet. That's great :). It's not like it was gamebreaking or anything, but definitely something that kinda bugged me.
@cain85
Dayum. Didn't notice one of us said FSAA will help make textures look better. Wasn't my point anyway. The only thing I saw that was a bit disappointing were exactly the jagged edges of characters. Where FSAA will make a huge difference, as you pointed out. Also no one said anything about lightning in the topic.
Anyway, Blizz said DX11 support "mainly for FSAA", but they never said it's the only feature they'll be adding. FSAA may not be a DX11 feature but Bashiok pointed out that this is exactly what they'll implement with DX11 support. :]
3. the fact that we're watching it through lossy video compression (this might seem like a non issue but it really changes what you perceive of the game)
Until you see the game running on your own computer, don't criticize the graphics too much. The difference between watching the game and watching the FRAPS videos, or what have you is the difference between watching TV and watching an iPhone video of a TV show and watching that. You lose a ton of resolution and framerate when you record youtube videos and even more when you stream, so I expect the game will look far better than most people currently are seeing.
@cain... Go read my post I never said it would make the textures look les smudged I said AA will reduce the jaggies, and make everything blend better instead of you seeing the clear pixel cutoff of the character and the environment. Stop putting my words in my mouth and learn to read before you spread your ignorance to other people. Plus they only have about 5 options in the game so far.
Current D3 options :
Window Mode
Screen Res
Texture Quality
Shadow Quality
Physics quality
FSAA" NOT ACTIVE
Triple Buffering and Vsync
Current SC2 options
All of the above except FSAA plus Lighting Quality
Shader Quality
Terrain Quality
Reflection Quality
Effects
Post-Processing
Models
Movies
And Indirect Shadows
All of these contribute to how it looks not just a single thing. And to you saying they won't be adding Dx11 features, maybe they will maybe they won't I personally hope they do because then you can take advantages of the better resource handling for multi-threaded processors. This would mean better optomization for us all. So in your own words "Seriously if you don't know shit why even bother spreading your ignorance to other people? Just dont bother posting instead or say you're not sure. "

@Entity : Also i wasn't talking only to 1 person, i basically "answered" to all the posts in this thread. And if you check correctly you'll see that Xerlane was talking about AA making the textures better so you can basically quit crying.
Also there isn't anything that they could implement dx11 related except tesselation, and you won't see that happening anyway for a game like diablo. And like i said before AA isn't a dx11 feature.
you're making yourself sound stupider and even though I know you weren't directly talking to me about saying AA would make textures look better you said everyone who was saying AA would make the textures better, and that everybody implied everybody talking about AA in general. Second I gave a prime example of how Dx11 can be used in other ways BESIDES TESSELLATION. Tessellation isn't the only feature of DX11 it is a prime feature but there are others. Such as the example I gave of how there is better resource management between multicore/threaded processors so that the game can be better optimized for multi-threaded computers. This right here is a prime example of feature of DX11 we want to see in D3. Also Dx11 uses less memory of the computer, not only that but Dx11 also has better display scaling for when you use things like projectors or bigger screens. So don't be so quick to say oh no dx11, there are useful features that can be introduced that will benefit D3.

I doubt we've seen the true potential of D3 graphics at this point. Even the 1080p recordings are likely not at full detail settings. I will also note, Blizzard has upgrades the graphics of Starcraft 2 since launch adding a number of "Extreme" options under graphics settings.
Oh i'm sorry, and there i was thinking we were talking about making the game LOOK BETTER, not RUN BETTER.
I'm sure plenty of people who play on the PC really care about the game being 10% more optimized considering this game will barely tax a mid-range pc maxed out.
Are you sure you're ok? Cause it ain't me making himself look more stupid here.
Also the first part of your wall of text makes absolutely 0 sense. I said AA won't affect how the textures look. Now look at what you wrote. My mind is full of fuck trying to decipher wtf you were trying to communicate.
Let me rephrase for you.
I understand you were not talking to me directly when you said that AA won't make textures look better, don't post your ignorance, But you implied me when you said everybody talking about AA. Happy now. And I am okay, And making the game run more efficiently can have a hand in making the game look better. If it runs more efficiently then you can make older machines run it at higher setting ultimately allowing developers to make their graphics more detailed and better looking in the end. And are you being sarcastic when you are saying this "I'm sure plenty of people who play on the PC really care about the game being 10% more optimized considering this game will barely tax a mid-range pc maxed out. " If so then yeah people do care when things are optimized. It means they can run other things more efficiently in the background without having to worry about D3 clogging up the system and hogging it's resources. People who want to capture their gameplay whether it be through a capture card or screen capture software require high end computers to process the game and the recording of the game at 60FPS 100% uncompressed, Allowing people to have a more optimized games allows these people to not have to spend money on more expensive rigs creating more videos for you to see of this beloved game. And I'm pretty sure you make yourself sound stupider and more like a troll when your posting because you're providing 0 evidence and are talking out of your ass. To you saying they won't have any Dx11 features, find me a single quote saying 0 Dx11 features will be in Diablo 3. Maybe then I'll stand down but for now I stand where I am. D3 can be improved by using Dx11 features such as the ones I've posted. Don't just post about us spreading ignorance. Because you're not helping by sitting there and saying "stop spreading ignorance" how about you help and explain some things first, make back up your argument. And I know you realize AA has no effect on textures, so try to back up what you are saying about 0 Dx11 features please.

Here's 2 tips (why im so sure about my statements, all you need to do is use your brain to think):
1. They won't bring tesselation at this point into the development cycle because they're basically almost at release date. It would take them a considerable amount of time (6 months up to 1 year maybe even more) to redo all the ingame assests to support tesselation in a way that would actually make a difference (Aka not smoothing character models since those look perfect anyway considering you play zoomed out)
Also most of the environment is just blocks being painted over with no real complex 3d geometry so once again a quick tesselation job would be totally useless
2. They also won't improve the game looks if they do manage to optimize it further because once again THEY'RE ALMOST AT RELEASE DATE and improving the looks would once again mean going over the game assets and you can go back to reading my first point
Also to the others saying "bla bla sc2 beta didnt have extreme settings till later on", this ain't a BETA in the real sense of the word. It's just stress testing servers so what you see is what you'll get in the final game (90%+ anyway).
BONUS TIP : TRY USING PARAGRAPHS FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. Reading walls of text can damage people, please respect those people and use paragraphs.
I'm not sure you understand What Dx11 entails. Dx11 is not just for more detailed graphics, It's for optimizing graphics performance as well. I agree What you see is around 60% of what you'll get remember they don't have some of the options I mentioned before in the Game Yet . Dx11 if used will effectively allow a 5+ year old computer run at med-high settings due to Optimization. I fully understand though that they won't go back and edit in super hq graphics. That's not to say they won't add DX11 optimization to the game.
Dx11 also allows those with Dedicated GPU's to have physics/AI processing on the GPU or split with the CPU to further enhance how smoothly the game runs. Cutting resources from one and putting it to the other that has much less going on, depending on your card, Is a huge weight being lifted off older computers shoulders.
Do you understand all of what I just said. I've put it as simply as it is. but in case you missed the point here it is in one sentence. Optimization can effectively make the game run better on older computers allowing for everyone to play at higher settings, playing at higher settings makes the game look better. Do you understand.
I'm also sorry but, EXCUSE ME. Apparently the Diablo 3 BETA, Isn't a BETA anymore. Well would you lookey here they must've done something wrong cause apparently this isn't a BETA. Nice logic there... Of course it is a beta in the truest sense of the word. What do Betas do? They test things. What is Blizzard doing with the Diablo 3 Beta? Testing things. there having been some changes to the game already read some of the patch notes and you'll see. I know that they've also already fixed some bugs in the beta, but they're still finding new ones and are fixing them. Yes it is mainly as a stress test of servers but that doesn't mean they are testing the games content with this Beta as well.
And finally as a closing to your pointless arguments that are either A. Obvious or B. false. Have you played the SC2 beta, then compared with hwo the game looks today? I recall looking at videos of the SC2 beta and seeing how much less appealing it looked than it does today, not only that but I'm pretty sure they fixed lots of bugs in that one too even though again it was mainly a stress test of the servers and a balancing Beta. So no this is not 90% what we'll see I'm sure they'll be changes made maybe this is 50-75 percent of what we'll see but certainly not 90%.

@Deckardcain85: Try being a bit more civil with your posts, that might just be why the first one got deleted.
As to tessellation, if they're going to be supporting DirectX 11 in the future there's no reason not to include it. Now it might not be ready for release but honestly who cares? If I get prettier eye candy in a patch a couple months down the road I'm not going to complain.
I'm done here anyway no point arguing with people when most don't even know anything at all about the subject at hand.
Have fun debating whether the new D3 login screen will need PHYSX to run.
You're mad because you trolled then got shown up. You have no IDEA what YOU are talking about. D3 is a tru beta. It's testing bugs and glitches as well as server stability. Sc2 did the exact same thing. Visually yes I believe D3 will change a bit. Higher quality, shadows better lighting. All that isn't in the beta right now. So you arguing against it changing is pointless because It isn't there yet but will be so there will be a change.
You're trying to argue that we know nothing yet I've given multiple examples of DIFFERENT dx11 features this game could use. apparently your definition of knowing about Dx11 is that the only Dx11 feature is Tessellation which is completely false, and is just the opinion of some uneducated fool. Maybe if you read on the differences between Dx10.1 and 11 you'd understand the reason Dx11 could be a huge supporting feature that can ultimately make the game run smoother.
Just to be a dick I'm going to reply to your sarcasm that D3 login screen might need NVIDIA PhysX. It won't because there's 0 objects on the screen besides a simple .gif background that runs loops.
Again to you saying that we can enhance AA in our CCC or Nvidia panel well yeah you can. But then it does it for everything on your computer and will significantly reduce performance. Obviously AA is not a Dx11 feature I completely understand that AA is not a Dx11 feature. but that doesn't mean there will be 0 Dx11 features in Diablo 3 Get over yourself and your whiny attitude thinking that you're always correct. How old are you ten? Be a man and grow up.

From what I've seen in HQ/HD, the graphics look great. I was positively surprised by how fluid and alive the world looks, but even more surprised by how dark and foreboding the atmosphere is.
I'm also a huge fan of the art direction, so that helps. It might get a bit cartoony at times, but if it's not stylized, it will look like Path of Exile. Now don't get me wrong, Path of Exile looks great (esp for free to play), but given the choice I prefer Diablo's living painting approach.
Slightly off-topic, but speaking of atmosphere, the sound design is flat-out incredible.

Well, it's not so much the colors I'm complaining about. Rather the crispness of the textures. They just feel smudged... I dunno... maybe I'm wrong.
