Hate to break it to you but I dont think Skyrim has won any awards yet. Plus the elder scrolls series is played by more of a select group of dedicated players than the casual gamer. I would say D3's competition for Game of the Year is actually Guild Wars 2. Coincidentally GW2 won Gamescom 2010 while D3 won Gamescom 2011. Personally I still think some of the systems in GW2 still top their counterparts in D3.

Blizzard used to care about releasing Diablo III, then they all took an arrow in the knee...

GW2 looks like a very good game, however it is coming out next spring so it cant be game of the year for 2011. If diablo comes out this year i think it will take goty. If it comes out next year i think GW2 will take the award. Regardless, i will be playing d3 for the rest of my life.
Like some have said before, it's apples and oranges, the 2 games have almost nothing in common, and there's serious competition out there as well.
I do personally believe though that if Diablo 3 is released on 2011, it is most definitely taking at least some of the "Game of the Year" awards out there, unless they screw up biiiig time with balancing/drops/quests/story(!!!)/interesting builds, which I hope they don't.
Yeah, it's so different, it's hard to say one over the other. Like comparing StarCraft to Heroes of Might and Magic.
I will play both, though I am more excited about Diablo 3. I am also excited about Skyrim, even though I absolutely loathed Oblivion.
It received many accolades, but I did not like it at all.
The voice acting was atrocious, peasants speaking in a crackly voice one second and then in an upper class voice the next. That terrible pie dialogue system. The country side was all the same damn thing. Monsters leveled with you, so you kinda always sucked. The oblivion gates were all the same variations and just felt 'meh'. The gist of the story just wasn't engaging enough, save the prince, then he died. And it was littered with so many crappy quests.
I didn't even finish the game, but my girlfriend modded the hell out of it just to make it bearable enough to play through.
I don't know, a lot of people liked it, but I just couldn't see what was so good about it except for the good graphics. Morrowind was better.
I'm really hopeful that Skyrim turns out better.
Hopefully skyrim will be more like morrowind then the disappointment oblivion was for me, the witcher 2 as it stands is the best RPG to come out this year it will be quite hard to beat.
Skyrim will most likely win just because it will have the larger community of players and the most popular game will obviously be more recognized. Of course like a lot of us here, I would rather Diablo 3 be the winner, but that doesn't deter me from at least trying Skyrim when it hits the shelves.
I bought Morrowind back in the day and disliked it it and gave it to my friend. He loved it and got all the gear. Idk. Elder Scrolls has character design that I cannot stand. And first person fantasy doesn't work for me at all. I was always more into stuff like Kings Quest, Heroes Quest then Diablo as I was growing up.
I'm just a Diablo guy. GOTY won't really factor in for me either way.

Guild Wars is not an Action RPG, just an FYI.
Im just talking general PC Game of the Year award not saying the 2 games are similar but they are both highly anticipated giants. Anyways in my opinion its a toss up between GW2 and D3 if they come out the same year (GW2 is actually scheduled for late 2011). Skyrim is much lower on the list, it may win XBOX GOTY but not PC GOTY.

Well, it all depends on how good these games actually are. If D3 is too repetitive etc.
But if both are executed perfectly, I'd say D3. Skyrim isn't breaking new ground and it has all been seen before. D3 on the other hand is trying things that has never been done before.
Same gameplay and random loot fest, the only drastically different feature in D3 are AH. Anyway, not being ''revolutionary'' doesn't mean its bad, if its not broken don't fix it.
Skyrim is the big favorite for game of the year, thats a fact. Actually, the best thing Blizzard could do is NOT release D3 this year, so many big titles coming out..
Get real, folks, the diablo you all knew is dead, a few years ago i said right here in this forum that D3 had a pretty good chance of being blizzard first bust (i was flamed to death ofc), and what you know, its not even beta and its already looking that way.
Dark Souls is a "spiritual" sequel to Demon Souls, which won Gamespot's 2009 game of the year. The problem with Demon Souls is that it is only offered on PS3. Dark Souls is offered on PS3 and xbox 360.
After looking at Dark Souls, I think it has more of a chance at 2011 game of the year than Skyrim does. But, I still think D3 would beat them both...

DUDE! yeah, totally. I'm 100% getting Dark Souls. Diablo 3 is the game i'm excited for but Dark Souls is in 2nd place. I played the previous one, Demon souls, and probably put around 250 hours into it. That game will kick your ass and force you to think, but it's such a good dungeon crawler.
Rarely do i play games set in medieval settings that scare the crap out of me and force me to be so strategic with combat, but that one does it really well and makes it a ton of fun. I also love the world that they create, how dark it is, and how creative the environments are.
My favorite level is what's basically a lepper camp in a muddy canyon crevice, at night, hundreds of feet above the canyon floor suspended by narrow rotting wood bridges...its awesome!

With that said, no other game comes even remotely close to those two on my list of most anticipated games.
I whole heartedly agree.

However, I was really looking forward to Skyrim, until I heard about Dark Souls coming out October 4th. Here is a link to the latest trailer,
