I seriously doubt they will announce the beta while people at the event play a 1-year old demo. I think you should interpret "nothing is happening" pretty literally.

Blizzard loves spreading rumors. They get social media and they understand how powerful this kind of thing can be for their game.

Maybe, maybe.. I'm not really counting on anything. But that last part of the paragraph really reads out in a sarcastic way.
Edit: Well to answer Kalvax's question, "How much more clear must the message be?"
You could say, "We will not be announcing any new information concerning the beta at Gamescon" that's a bit more clear. "Nothing is happening" is a pretty convoluted message. Obviously things are going to be happening.
Fact: They wouldn't post that nothing is happening if nothing was happening. Bashiok saying "nothing is happening can't be any more clear" is probably best visualized with him shifting his eyes left and right while pulling off a bad poker face. Beta? I dunno. It'd be cool. I'm not terribly hopeful on that end, but it'll be something.
As a side note, any rumors you may have heard about a gateto Diablo’s Burning Hells opening in Cologne are completely unfounded. Seriously, nothing is happening at Rudolfplatz from the evening of August 16 — especially nothing to do with demonic invasions.
I find it odd also that Blizzard would intentionally bring it to light as being a rumor. Yet most places where discussion has taken place over if Blizzard would announce beta at Gamescom is filled with most saying they believe they will not for logical reasons.
Yet on the flip side as seen with the rumored RMAH before the press event NDA lifted Blizzard kept quiet. With another Blizzard rep responding I would say it means just what it says. Though if Blizzard brought it to light on purpose would that change the standard of them replying to false rumors and keeping quiet on true ones?
Not sure what to think yet I will not get my hopes up.
There is NO REASON Blizzard would EVER say nothing is going to happen. That throws away press, seems stupid. Then they were specific as to WHAT will not happen on the 16th... Demonic invasions...
They MUST be messing with us. I definitely think a diablo 3 related announcement will occur on the 16th, maybe beta will start. I do not think they are being serious. They are trolling so hard to generate hype.

they also could be saying that they will be using a 1 year old version of the game as not to "spoil" anything.
I have a feeling that the 2010 Blizzcon demo being used at the event is unrelated. Blizzard will probably make adjustments to the beta build up until the moment they flip the switch for those able to download and get into the beta. I imagine they have to get the demo build installed on the computers and transported to the event which could take some time.
Unless the beta was ready a week ago and they do not plan on making adjustments before it goes live then i could have seen them putting that on the machines for the event. Beta being their main focus creating a new demo build outside of the beta would have been manpower pulled from it and that would have been a bad choice in my opinion.
If we do hear anything I imagine it will be a more detailed timeframe for the beta start as starting a beta while key personnel are busy at an event would be odd.
My guess would be that it may pertain to the "Inferno" leak that came about earlier. Its a bit of a stretch but "gates to Diablo's burning hells", of course I could be reading too much into the wording however. This may also be the final "system reveal" prior to the beta release, as I highly doubt they will announce the beta date at gamescom
I think there's a good chance it means something. Gamescom runs from 8/17 - 8/21. Why did Blizzard choose the evening of the 16th in their teaser? I think it means that at midnight, something will be posted online, be it a beta announcment, another system reveal, or otherwise. Time will tell.

And doing a great job of it.
If there was some rumor, where did it come from? If there was no rumor, what does it mean?
