I'm going to try to make this as short and sweet as possible, but it might be difficult.
I've just become aware that Star Wars: The Old Republic (swtor) is now available for pre-order on various sites (even Curse is running an ad campaign). It's not really questioned that the game is going to be pretty huge. It already has a massive following on the official swtor forums if you haven't noticed, and the game is on one of the biggest budgets for a game of all time. It's been on the many top ten lists for this year along with Diablo 3.
Since both D3 and swtor will be coming out this year (or at least scheduled to), do you think swtor will have a negative impact on D3's success?
They're completely different kinds of games. How could one necessarily hurt the other? Most games I see coming out will only serve to compliment one another anyway.
I know a couple of people who only have time for one game and as such they won't even be purchasing diablo 3 because of they hype of swtor. That's the main reason I brought it up.
Hmm, starting next month I'm gonna be pretty damn busy with school and work. But I always make time for games. I can really see myself alternating between D3 and say Skyrim and being just fine with that. Guess that's just me though.
D3 is dark fantasy arpg, SWTOR is.. "light" sci-fi mmorpg?.. completely different markets i guess? i'd say skyrim will be more of a competitor.. WoW might see a loss in subscribers, but WoW always sees a loss in subscribers when new MMO's are released.. lol
Well everyone doesn't limit their preferences to one genre, like I presume you do.
I'm pretty sure SW:tOR will be released a lot sooner than Diablo 3 so if it's boring people can just prepare for Diablo 3 instead, if it's not boring :'(

I think it all comes down to how dedicated you are. MMO's I guess take up a lot of time (never actually played any) but I mean, come on this is Diablo 3 we are talking about. This is Blizzard. Now I admit that KOTOR was an awesome game and SWTOR will be much bigger and better. But in the end though it may be enjoyable, I don't think it will be as revolutionary as D3 will be. Every single game that Blizzard has released, be it RPG, MMO or RTS has revolutionalized its genre and became a staple for any other game that followed for years. I think it's a safe bet that soon enough every major ARPG that will come out will be ripping off ideas from D3 left and right.
The question then is, if you are an ARPG fan are you really willing to miss out on something like this? It depends on whether you like more action or more RPG because SWTOR and D3 will each cater to a different side of the RPG audience. In the end it comes down to what interests you in RPGs and whether you want to witness a part of gaming history or jump into another (no doubt stellar) MMO. It's also I think about the money that people are willing to spend because naturally supporting an MMO requires a lot of money input from the buyers.
But I think that for us Diablo Fans this is not really a question. Everyone who considers himself a Diablo fan will be getting D3 and will be playing it to death (and beyond). In the end we might be happy that some people will buy SWTOR instead of D3 because those people are obviously not dedicated enough to the Diablo franchise to care about it...and in the end that will mean a larger percentage of D3 players will be "hardcore" fans (don't mistake with Hardcore players)..which I think is a good thing. The more hardcore fans, the more passionate and dedicated and high-level will the D3 player community be in my opinion.

A soft answer turneth away wrath. Once wrath is looking the other way, shoot it in the head!
If there can be only one, sorry SWTOR but its Diablo. I do understand the argument that some people have time for only one game, I do fit into that category. For me it has to be the big D since it is going to be providing me with tons of game time, ability to play with friends, talk with friends over three games, meet new people, use a market system, and all this without monthly fees.
I probably won't play SWtOR unless it's free to play. Paying for 5 years of WoW was enough for me.

My place really was here. I was too foolish and stubborn to notice. But, what I truly hoped for then was here. Why do I always realize it When I've already lost it.
Yeah, i am of the same opinion as everyone else; different games entirely, and thus not a threat.
Not to mention just judging from all of the SWTOR videos i've seen, the game looks terribad. The graphics look about 6 years old, gameplay looks boring (this is coming from someone who still has a wow account), the quests look boring, and it looks too dialogue heavy. A threat for D3? not at all.
Hmmm. I generally play one game and that's it. I like to stick with one game and get really good at it. Also, unless you're not working or not going to school, I don't see how you have enough time to play more than one game and really get into it. I don't see myself playing both of these games and because a lot of my friends see it the same way, there definitely is a conflict for some.
I think this is a valid concern - or issue, I guess. I've got a good friend that introduced me to D2 back in the day - and WoW, for that matter - who just preordered SWTOR. He's been pushing me to play it and I have to admit, it does look enticing. But if I've learned anything from my several years of WoW - the first year or so of a new MMO usually undergoes some radical changes. So D3 it is for me and maybe TOR a year or so later, once they work out the kinks.
There is a 90% that blizz wil end himself, and a 10% chance that another company wil end blizzards WoW.
I remember so manny games came out that wure supose to be wow killers, like age of conan , remember ? Haha so manny people i played wow 2 gether sayd this wil kill wow that wil kill wow, i never agreed.
I am not saying Tor wil kill Wow, but if someone has a chance, its Tor thats one thing for sure.
I've been very wary about calling any MMO a "wow killer", because I don't think there is such a thing. Wow will always have it's place. Wow will always be a great game and one that changed the MMO industry forever.
There are still other very wonderful, thriving communities in other MMOs and there's no reason to disqualify another MMO as totally legit if it doesn't "kill wow".
That being said, if there is some MMO that has the potential to take a larger slice of the MMO market pie, SWTOR is it.
Edit: I realize that's not the point of this thread, but I thought it interesting enough.
If SWTOR didn't exist, yes I'd expect to see more D3 sales, noting substantial though. As mentioned many times, they are different genres, and while admittedly SWTOR will likely have a larger fan base only because Star Wars is so huge, the people who enjoyed WoW, Diablo, or look up to Blizzard in general will likely still try D3. I personally have zero interest in SWTOR, and will likely never even play it. I'm sure there are people on the other side of the fence as me who feel the same was about D3 though.

Different kind of games, but yes, its always a smart move to avoid close releases to other major titles out there(skyrim, MW3, SW, just to name a few).
It wont be huge, but it will definitly have an impact on D3 sales, keep in mind that people who are not familiar to D3(which blizzard is aiming for ) will probably favor other titles if they have limited options.
Get real, folks, the diablo you all knew is dead, a few years ago i said right here in this forum that D3 had a pretty good chance of being blizzard first bust (i was flamed to death ofc), and what you know, its not even beta and its already looking that way.
Probably not to any great degree like perhaps it might be to something like WoW or Guild Wars 2 which are all competing with each other for a much more similar market than say Diablo 3 is.
I remember so manny games came out that wure supose to be wow killers, like age of conan , remember ? Haha so manny people i played wow 2 gether sayd this wil kill wow that wil kill wow, i never agreed.
I don't agree. I don't think ToR could kill WoW. They are on complete opposite sides of the genre. The only game I could see affecting WoW would be Rift, and the only reason would be that Rift takes the problems that WoW has and pretty much fixes them. In my opinion at least.
That being said, Rift would only have, like you said, a 10% chance, at most.
Wow will always have it's place. Wow will always be a great game and one that changed the MMO industry forever.
WoW will die most likely not because of another game or because of Blizzard, but because it will run out of lore. Eventually you will have to go to K'Aresh or Argus or wherever Sargerus happens to be at the time and defeat him. And then WoW will be over. No Sargerus, no WoW.
Warcraft 4 then gets introduced. Guess what! Turns out Sargerus wasn't the bad guy! Somebody was controlling him, and now its WoW 2, a mad dash to save Azeroth from the new bad guy, from level 1.
I could see Blizzard having two MMO's out. If they make Titan different enough (Read: Action MMO like DCUO vs MMORPG like Rift) the crossover wouldn't be nearly as bad as most would think.
WoW will not die because of ageing. I can almost guarantee you that Blizzard is planning to do a game engine swap in WoW. I don't see it dying because of it getting boring either. With PvP and better PvE, the only way I can see WoW dying is because it runs out of Lore.
Also on topic: I haven't seen a single ad for SW:TOR. The way I found out about it is one of my webcomics featured it.
