Ok so i was thinking to myself when diablo 3 is out will they have the same security systems in place as they do in Wow. as in if your account was to get highjacked for all its items and accounts deleted you could just open up a thread to retrieve all the lost pixels. Or will it be like the game Runescape where people phish/hack/R.A.T the victims accounts to get there items/accounts for them to keep with no way with getting it back?
Since wow and diablo are both made by Blizzard, I would safely assume it will be like wow.
I'm gonna have to disagree with you on that.
In WoW, a player is a continuous revenue source. If someone lost their gear because of phishing, they might quit and thats a lost customer for next month. Also, since that person is paying monthly, Blizzard can afford to offer that kind of security service.
Diablo 3 isn't monthly, so I doubt they will have the monetary resources to deal with small claims like that. It would be awesome if they did, but I can't see this happening.
I don't even know why WoW has item return policy if you get it hacked.
Its partly your fault for getting hacked. 90% of the time, you get hacked because your careless with information thats suppose to be kept only for yourself.
And Diablo 3 is highly going to emphasis that whatever happens, they are not responsible for it.
Why would they be?
I disagree with you. Blizzard, not just wow, has great customer service. For them to deny high quality customer service for one of their games just because it does not have a monthly subscription is rediculous. Blizzard has to maintain a high quality of service as a comany, notjust one of is games.
If that doesn't convnve you then we will get technical. All Blizzard games are now done through battle.net. If some gets your info, the can get your wow and diablo characters. It's not like they would only restore the wowones when the diablo one is equally effected.

Both Scyber and Shadow have good points. Blizzard is getting much better with account recovery in WoW, though it's partly because the player are cash incomes. I feel now that Blizzard is running the show in stead of B-North they'll have a serves where if you loose your gear and show proof they'll do a reasonable job in servicing you.
Personally I'm going to get the !>FREE<! Mobile Authenticator App for my phone.. It's free.. Everyone with a compatible phone should have one. If not, dropping $6.50 on the key chain version key chain version wouldn't be a bad idea. I'm sure they'll have a Diablo themed one.

Blizzard recovers Starcraft 2 accounts, so I don't see why they wouldn't do the same for Diablo 3. All the new Blizzard games are essentially on one account: your battle.net account. You use the same login for every game. Recovering a WoW account is pretty much the same as recovering a D3 account. Blizzard keeps logs of everything such as what items your character had, so they can give new ones if you get hacked.
Now this won't be for cases where you make a mistake. Like if I accidentally dropped an item and someone took it. That would be all my fault. For cases where someone actually gets into your account, Blizzard will be "assessing" the damage and giving you compensation. I have an authenticator from my WoW days though, so I don't have to worry about these things anymore.
Thander hits the nail on the head: There is no difference between WoW, Starcraft 2, and Diablo 3 accounts any more. My battle.net account was hacked one time and I got it back through Blizzard support easily. All of your Blizzard games (definitely anything running on bnet 2.0 which includes Diablo 3) are linked together on a single Battle.net account which has full access to Blizzard support for account recovery.
Blizzard logs your account constantly. If you file a claim they will investigate it. If the find suspectious activity (all ofyiur gear and stash being sold in a few minutes) then they can restore your character to a time before this event happened. It's really not all that difficult. Sure, there may be some people who abuse the system but these people know what they are doing.
I don't see why you think it's impossible?

If you file a claim and they find it to be legitimate, then they can see what items you had before you got hacked and then replace those items. It's not like they get back your original items. They just create new ones for you. They will usually flag the user that got all of your items and banthem if there are multiple occurances. Blizzard has access to the actual servers so they can do whatever they want.

Considering it will be tied into your battle.net account you "should" have access to customer support with any account related issues. Older games like d1, d2, sc1 etc were on an older platform where you could essentially create a dozen accounts and run rampant.
D3 will most likely follow the same account structure as wow & sc2 where you login with your battle.net account name & therefore you will always be able to recover your account and possessions.
It is possibly exploitable. However, these people know what they are doing and now have tons of experience with these situations. So, let's say you play with a friend constantly. Then you trade items to him and then claim that he hacked your account and stole stuff. They may be curious since they see you play with this person all the time. But hey, people get in fights and possibly did this. So, in your favor they replace your items. Now, you get back on-line and start playing with this person again. Then Blizzard is like WTF? They flag both of you for suspicious activity. If you put in another claim, especially with the same person, they probably won't help you.
Keep in mind that on Blizzard's side they can see pretty much everything you do. That is one reason why they require you to use battle.net, for your security.

I think they would also strip the items your friend "hacked" off you. Also I'm rather fond of how easy it was in WoW to block people from contacting you (spammers). You could simply right click on their name in the chat box and Block and Report, good day sir! I think accounts that amass too many of these will get reviewed and possibly banned, so spammers shouldn't be a huge problem like in D2.
Well then you are right maybe, but that seem very exploitable though. For example someone gives a password to a friend and he takes most of valuable items and then trades them and then that guy files a claim, and I really really doubt that blizzard is going to replace him those items.
I always thought that's the reason they never return you your items in D2 because it's just looks like impossible to proof anything and just too exploitable for scammers.
How would this even be an exploit? They would permaban the account that 'hacked' has the items and probably delete the old versions while sending the hard to get items back to the original owner. It would just mean that the person who got 'hacked' would have to sit around with no items for a while, get his friend banned, and risk Blizzard catching on and banning him too, just so that he could get back the items he already had.
And at least in WoW you have a limited amount of times that you can ask to recover an item from a vendor that you accidentally sold it to or something, and you can't get back stuff you traded unless its proven that you were hacked (which obviously would be pretty easy if you logged on and found all your items gone). And again, the person who steals the items gets banned, so thats a pretty high risk just to get some items you could go grind for.
Right, but when you recover an item they delete the old ones and possibly ban whoever currently has them if they can prove that it was hacked (which isn't terribly hard when they have access to the servers). So its not like there would be two copies of the items floating around either way.
Well for starters the most important items are going to be BoE, so that wouldn't be possible for items that you have to work hard for. And in WoW, you basically get the item back in your mailbox and you have to pay whatever you got from the vendor for selling it (in the case of vendored items).
Doesn't blizzard keep tabs on your location too whenever you log in? I could of swore I had an D2 account suspended once because I had my cousin who lives far away log into my account shortly after me. This was a long long time ago so my memory might not be accurate.
I thought they still did this, but seeing how getting your account hi-jacked in WoW is kind of the norm for people who are clumsy or gullible, it might not be so.
