Reading through the thread about Runes affecting Traps, someone mentioned something about turning Grenades into Smoke Bombs. At first, I thought "cool...the grenades would blind the enemies, which would be a good thing for a ranged class like the Demon Hunter." But then I thought, "would the name actually change? A Grenade and a Smoke Bomb are two pretty different animals..."
Since we know the specific effects of Runes on a few Skills, we can think about this question without having to hypothesize about Rune effects, like in the above example. For some Skills, like Hydra, I think the name would remain - despite the fact that we're all used to Hydras shooting Firebolts, there's nothing about "Hydra" that implies that they shoot Firebolts...so the name could easily remain, even if it's shooting Frost, Lightning, or acid. Some Skills, on the other hand, don't really remain true to their original name once Runed. Take Plague of Toads, for example. A single, giant toad certainly isn't a Plague. Nor is it Toads. So the original name doesn't necessarily imply anything about what the Skill actually does (except that there's a toad involved). Likewise, a dart that deals fire damage isn't really a Poison Dart. And a corpse isn't (technically) a weapon.
Good points - I won't be surprised if they end up changing some names to fit more generic behaviors. I think it would get too confusing if they gave a specific name for each modded effect, which would result in a ton of skills.
I don't think the runes change the name, but in the skill section of the UI it looked obvious what rune was in the skill. I don't know though, but it wouldn't be a bad idea.

I understand where you're coming from, but all those skills are going to be present anyway. Here some (not all) of them just have different names. I think it would add slightly to the feel of being "different" from another build of the same class when they're using Grenades and you're using Smoke Bombs.
The thing is, it could potentially be confusing. "Grenade" skill is Grenade. But you put something in it, its renamed in smoke bomb? The names can become quite different and not reflective of the original skill. And since you can change the runes, it just leads to needless confusion.
If a runed skill is to be given new names, the original name should also be visible, if nothing else at least in the tooltip.
Well for things like Zombie Bears and the huge toad (if they're put in) are completely different than their base skills, so maybe for certain skills it will change the name, but for others that are basically the same thing, it doesn't have to change to properly describe it.

Exactly. Which is what I was getting at with the Hydra example.
It's kind of hard to say how big of an effect something like this would have, because we don't know how many rune/skill combos would warrant a name change. If it's a fairly large number, it might become a little cumbersome, but if it's only like 3-5 per class (maybe more?) or something, it could be cool.

That's kind of the point. Because the skill itself is no longer reflective of the original.
