The whole Artisan mechanic got me thinking if having a Pets mechanic - improving upon WoW's pet system - would be better than having mercs:
1)Can't equip pets, but can "grow" them by using salvage/gold, just like artisans. Provides another sink for both resources, while improving pet's size/stats/skill boost/appearance
2)Instead of hiring, you obtain pets as if they're rare item drops from mob - give them random skills/stats, trade with other players, etc
3)More interesting than having a limited selection of mercs like D2 - having a fetish/demonlord fighting with you would be pretty awesome IMO. Tying new pet choices to achievements system could work too
As long as they do NOT put in ridiculous choices like WoW (space marines lolwtf??), it should be fun

i think pets are an awesome idea, although i'm sure many people disagree.
only thing is i would prefer it as a main trait of a specific class as opposed to a mandatory feature for everyone.
in neverwinter nights 2, many of the classes had minions/familiars/pets and it just took the glory out of having one.
i think hirelings are better in that sense because it feels as though you're simply adventuring with another player and the uniqueness of certain classes (i.e. the witch doctor and possible "hunter") are preserved.

"Pets" don't really cut it for Diablo 3... Think demons or angels. Something more Diablo 3'ish.

Life is only another stage of death, in fearing death you can not live life to the fullest. Some of the world's greatest feats were accomplished by people not smart enough to know they were impossible.
there are pets. the Witch Doctor has them.
but pets in the WoW style dont fit that well. each class would have to get a suiting pet. Barbarian is easy, war hound but what of the Wizard? mana worm? nothing like that exists in Diablo. and demons arent suited for pets, they're too chaotic.
as a mechanic it messes up things even more if you want to be able and give orders. the mercs as we saw attack whatever they see, no real control there and they usually die quickly. as is supposed to be with everything that's not the player. Diablo has always been about a hero destroying hordes of evil, never about a hero and his loyal pet
I'm not a big fan of the pet idea. I just don't see animals running along side us and fighting the demons with us and this is coming from someone whose favorite class is the Druid. For him it was fine because it fit his lore. But for every player to have one? What animals would they be?
I think human helpers just fits Diablo much better.
I would seriously consider not buying D3 simply to make a statement that they went over the top with the whole "snatch things from WoW, even if they seem suitable". I'd understand if the WD got some pets via some skill or something, but really..pets are so fucking annoying. The entire concept is fucking annoying.
stop thinking WoW and start thinking mechanics.
the idea of pets that followed orders existed long before that, you're just QQing about irrelevant crap.
we already agreed that its not fitting the Diablo franchise, not because the pets are in WoW (just about every single skill resource btw, havent seen enough of that whining) but more because giving orders and having active skills on the pet takes the focus away from the characters. which are supposed to be in the spotlight.
Blizzard already showed they dont really care about what people think when they "snatch things from WoW or whatever game" if they feel it helps create the thing they want. And they're usually right to do so too. I was here the day it was released and remember the crying over the graphics style. the same one people love now. just a sidenote.
WoW is a cookie with chocolate, because everybody eats it people like you say that new cookies should not have chocolate. Even though there were other cookies with chocolate before.
Do you see the idiocy?
I don't eat chocolate cookies. Does that mean I'm a nobody?

What mechanics? It not fitting the Diablo franchise is exactly what I meant when I said it'd be going over the top. What are you even rambling on about?
Who gives a shit about graphics? People who did when D2 was released are fucking morons. Games like Heroes 3, Blood, Worms, and such have shitty graphics, but are awesome games.
Point is, using things that are made famous by WoW, regardless of the fact that WoW might have taken such things from other games, is really a dumb thing seeing as how almost everyone is just waiting for them to pick out something out of WoW and put it in D3 just to start bitching. I don't care about a lot of things they might or might not have taken from WoW, but something as blatant as pets is just..*shudders*
I don't like the pet concept. I don't even like mercs in D2.
Imo some classes are meant to walk around surrounded by servants/allies and others are suppose to be lone walfs. Add this kind of system just kill the second archetype.
Imo there are many ways to add dephth in the game w/o giving everyone a summon.

Imagine controlling your character and then at the same time you have to control the pet and his abilaties and attacks and at the same time worry about your health. You will be all over the keyboard.
that's talking about how it will affect the game. its not about WoW, or Everquest or whatever else. Its about Diablo III.
What annoys me is kids that cry "hey its in WoW it doesnt belong in Diablo". Enchants are here too. And most obviously snatched from WoW. Still looks good in the game.
and to state the facts, they didnt get famous from WoW. They got rich from WoW. Warcraft 1 made them known. Warcraft 2 even more so. Diablo was the breakthrough and Starcraft finished the job. They're growing in popularity ever since.

Assumming a similar mechanic and system to D2, you would presumably equip mercs with armor and weapons that your own char could actually use.
What would you equip a pet with? Sharper teeth? Spiked collar?
They can easily find a way around this but a merc is just simpler.
Another point would be the presence of the WD. The guy already has pets and if you give pets(though they'll be different) to everybody, you actually take away some of the uniqueness from that character.
None of these probs with just having mercs in the place.
Also really lame and lazy argumentation by bringing wow or torchlight comparisons in here... By mentioning the core elements that the blizz team singled out as characterizing diablo, Jay never said anything about mercs(at least I didn't hear anything about it). So it's not like they are irreplaceable either.
