Well I've been thinking lately about how Blizzard is going to make better use of Gold in D3.
So I thought of the potential uses for Gold that might make it a very "needed" part of the game. So I thought I would bring some of these Ideas to light with the rest of you and hope for some of your thoughts.
In previous Diablo1 and 2, Gold was simply used for purchase of potions and repairs of armor. lets not forget Gold was handy at lvl1 through lvl10 buying all the garbage that the NPC's had.
So, to possibly make better use of Gold that doesn't seem "Over the Top" we should look into things like upgrades to your equipment. Allow me to elaborate....
In the videos and demos we have all seen on youtube, Gold seems to still be very abundant. Sometimes dropping 300-600 pieces of Gold per kill, even more from bosses.
So Im pretty sure we will have vast amounts of Gold at our disposal and we wont have to "Gold Farm" as they do in WoW.
With this in mind I can only think of ways to make better use of Gold with investing....No not like the stock market, I mean like saving 100 Million Gold to add 50 defense to a single piece of Armor. Or 250 Million to increase damage of a weapon by 10 in either Max dmg or Min dmg.
Or things similar to this, making Gold a VERY sought after and useful attribute to D3.
With the constant findings of new and better equipment, Gold would be handy for when you want to make the equipment "Godly."
As for the amount of times that you can perform an amplification to your equipment, I think you should be able to do it as many times as you like.
But, with the consequence that the price Doubles everytime for the same upgrade.
Thats just one way of making Gold a valuable attribute to D3.
Thoughts? Ideas? Revisions?
Cheers!

Gold amount drops in the demo previews are hardly representative of the final product. Gold will likely be as valuable in Diablo 3 as it is in WoW and useful for one thing: the auction house.
There are two uses for gold which I would like to see in the game and which I think will be very useful but not OP.
First there is Respeccing, I think it is a great mechanic but it should ofc cost alot, so you can still correct mistakes but not completely overhaul your character every day.
Second there is Desocketing, which enables you to remove gems and such from weapons and armor. This is something I would like to see implemented in the game aswell for the same reasons as Respeccing.
I think respec will be more a kind of quest instead of only gold and easiness to obtain.
I expect something like socket or desocket, items or gems and depending what you choose the other part will be destroyed.
I would something to boost your items as your wish, indeed you need to pay for, exponentially equal to the number of upgrade you've done and ~power level of your item you want boost.
The havn't balanced yet, most of the items in the game currently are just items to play with, think of them as test items.
They threw in a random amount of gold drops in the game, they will tone it down once they near the end of development.
Not to mention that we don't know what things cost yet. 300 gold could end up being practically worthless or a huge amount of money depending on how they set the prices on goods and services.

I went outside once. The graphics were good but the gameplay sucked.
Repair, Upgrade, appearance, mercenaries, transmute of some sort, a stat change of some sort, unlockables perhaps, and of course, buying items. These are all things that you could possibly do with gold in D3. I really dont see D3 ending up like d2 where gold was thrown in the millions on the ground. Blizz are working hard on D3, a good and stable economy is one of their top priorities. So i say, worry not my friends.

not that it makes a difference but id like gold worth alot but like still have to carry alot around if that makes sense. like 1 WoW gold worth 1,000 D3 gold or should i say 1 copper in WoW equals one gold D3.(i like gold :P)

Respeccing, auction house fees and Socketing items/skills come to mind also.
I'm looking forward to see how the economy will work out. I just wish the game would hurry up and get here.

Yea I like this idea and the expanding storage space.. As long as you have something to spend your gold on then it doesn't become useless. Making items better with it..ehh not in my taste to be honest.

euhhhhh WHY ???? You'll need to have a very good reason... You better like to "manually trade" like in d2, fu**ing waste of time and annoying work to mostly fail your trade because one of the players don't want trade...

So please explain why do you think auction house doesn't fit for d3 ?

No one needs a reason to have an opinion. And I'd recommend him not to waste his time explaining to you. He said enough in his post to understand his point of view.

????????????????? damn it SFJake.....
I don't ask to you...
1. Yes every opinions have a reason otherwise it's a caprice and an unfounded thought.
2. I don't see anywhere explaination to understand his point of view "to not have an auction house".
3. Don't post useless post like this to try to destroyed others questions.
THX !
I wanna know why someone wouldn't an easy way to trade, it's a fair and easy question ?! no ?

Forgive my blanket response, but I won't even be as concerned about what I can use gold for in D3 as long as I don't have to pick it up off the ground anymore.
