As of now, there is no set number to how many people will be able to join the same room and party up. Most recently, the number was said to be around 4 players.
Official Blizzard Quote:
On the Blizzcon show floor, the number of players able to join a multiplayer session of D3 was capped at four, half that of Diablo II. While Jay Wilson cautioned the group that this was by no means a final decision for the game's direction, it was a number that "grows more solid every day." In Diablo II, it was extremely rare to find an eight-person game where all eight people were playing together, and while playing and testing internally, D3 didn't feel right with a larger party size - there were "too many people."
Wilson also dismissed oddly-persistent rumors that Diablo would ship before StarCraft II, though he jokingly acknowledged that he "wished it was true."

We will have to get in a party to do some content or everything is "soloable"?
Every aspect of Diablo III is playable through single-player and everything can be completed single-player.
Official Blizzard Quote:
I think people will be most excited about co-op. Sure, you can play Diablo III as a single-player game, but at any point you can join your friends, they can come online and immediately jump in with their character.
Official Blizzard Quote:
Jay Wilson: Well, the main reason for immunities in the game was to encourage party play. However, we have seen that some players just want to play by themselves? And that is fine, if a player wants to play single player, the player wants to play single player, we're not going to strong arm them into playing with others.

There is a possibility of Diablo III being released on consoles. However, it seems unlikely as of now.
Official Blizzard Quote:
Any plans to bring Diablo 3 to console?
I don't know yet. A lot of it depends on whether we think the gameplay experience will be the same on console, especially regarding the controls. Also I'd like to keep our audience together. One question mark I have is whether the console owners would allow PC players to play against console gamers. I think the answer gets a lot easier if the console owners say yes. But at the moment they do like to have closed systems. But you know, I think what it really it comes down to is the game itself. We want to deliver what is the best experience possible so the controls and everything else have to be perfect. When you are developing for multiple platforms you sometimes have to compromise. We aren't willing to compromise. We have relationships with all the console manufacturers. I know they would love to have us on their platforms, ideally on their own and not their competitor! But it's all about the game experience.

Will there be a choice to play on ladder or non-ladder?
How will the attributes be distributed? I've been hearing from people on this forum that attributes will be automatically distributed based on our character's class.
The attributes will be distributed based on class. You are likely to augment the attributes based on items. Skills or skill runes maybe a means to augment the attributes. Quests may also be another option to increase attributes.
I have no idea on the numbers for the attributes and how much you get per level up. Likely changes are going to be made when the game is at the balancing and beta stage.
As for ladder or non ladder we will not know until we have information on Diablo 3's implementation of Battlenet 2. For starcraft they are going to use rankings and leader boards based on your skill level.
I can see ladders and leader boards. One thing that would be nice is a section for fan based tournaments

Will there be a choice to play on ladder or non-ladder? Updated 03/19/10
As we know it, Ladders will not be in Diablo III. Although it has not been stated directly, it has been said that they will not use ladder resets which negates the use of ladders.
However, this is not to say that there will not be leader boards of many different stats with the use of Battle.net.
Official Blizzard Quote:
There's no reason for Diablo III to have ladder resets. They're a quick and dirty method of resetting the economy to 0 in Diablo II. It works. For a while. Then the great purging begins again.

Stat/attribute points are automatically distributed. It is still unknown exactly the stat distribution per level and per class.
Official Blizzard Quote:
If manual stat placement was or should become the best system for the game then we would balance for it - bottom line. But the fact is, it isn't the best system. The game needs to be fun, it needs to be awesome. We're not going to cut corners or try to make it easier on ourselves by choosing systems that are less work. In fact I'd say the exact opposite is true. Some of things these guys do requires an insane amount of work, but it makes the game better, and that's why it's done.
Manual stats ultimately provide no better or more interesting customization options than other systems, and in fact by removing it we're then able to implement systems which are better and more interesting ways of character customization.
There's a last thread of "well why can't we have everything?" that auto-stat opponents hold to, and the simple answer there is that having a bunch of different systems all just sort of tossed in onto each other is not a clean or fun solution. We want a lot of customization, we'll have a lot of customization, clicking a button to allocate stat points in no way needs to be involved to make that true.

Is there going to be an open/closed battle.net like on Diablo 2? Or will our single player characters be linked to our multiplayer without having to create a separate character?

Very little is known right now on how Battle.net is going to work with Diablo III, mainly because they haven't done much work with it yet. It is unknown right now whether or not Diablo III will have an open/close Battle.net option. There will be an off-line mode but it is unknown whether or not you will be able to use those characters to play on-line.

only 4?!? i would personally prefer keeping it 8 or even changing it to 6.. but 4 wow? to me it seems like if one person on your party is bad then it would be hard to succed in a quest.
on that note i can also guess that D3 will have a lot more clans/guilds for the fact that people wont want to play with BK's.

It is unknown exactly how many skills each class have. With the separation of passive into the new trait system, the number has dropped significantly.

No, each class will begin playing the game at the same point. However, each NPC reacts to each class differently so the beginning will be slightly different depending on what class you are playing.
There is also the possibility of cinematics at the beginning being different for each class.
