Ok, so I know it has been a topic of other discussions, in other threads, but it was before BlizzCon 2009, so I wanted to come back on the subject again.
During Diablo3 Q&A saturday afternoon, someone asked the Diablo3 team a pretty interesting question :
How the hell is Diablo still alive?
Because, you know, I thought we killed him quite a few times, and destroyed his soulstone...
To this thoughtful question, a Blizzard representative answered, this most 'Blizzardful' answer :
We have not yet announced that Diablo would be present in this game.
That's it. Nothing else, next question.
So... My question is:
What do you think they mean, and how could Diablo not be in a Diablo game? Isn't it like Mario not being in a Mario game?
Discuss!

If you can't amaze people with your intelligence, confuse them with your bullshit.
and no, you don't need diablo in his physical form for the game to be diablo
I know you dont NEED it for the game to be Diablo, that's exactly what I'm asking... How?
Maybe Tyrael is the new Diablo like you say, but what I'm asking is : How can it be Diablo without(any kind of) Diablo in it? Will there be someone else turning into Diablo? If yes, how could this happen, and who would it be? Will the old prime evils come back and form a new evilish entity and call it Diablo? Or will a shard of Diablo's soulstone get inside the ears of Tyrael when he helps destroying it, turning him into the new Diablo?
That's the kind of thing I'm asking. I know Diablo isn't necessarily in his physical form in Diablo, but who will become the bad guy, and how could he become it, after we destroyed the f.ing soulstone?

personally i think blizzard is cryptic with their answer, as always.
but im not too worried of Diablo showing up b/c its their game thier lore and therefore they can do whatever they want. which is what they said regarding the female monk i believe.
but hey lurked i love ur idea regarding the the piece of soulstone getting inside the ears of tyrael, i hope thats how Diablo DOESNT come back, lol.

The one who makes it doesn't make it for himself. The one who buys it doesn't buy it for himself. The one who needs it doesn't know it when he needs it.
Tyrael was corrupted when he destroyed the worldstone, all the npcs tell you that
and he will probably be the diablo of d3 as in, he is who you kill
also, diablo will probably be present as the story is told throughout the acts, in what form or fashion is a surprise that you have to wait for!
also it is possible that Tyrael was already corrupt (which is why he interfered in diablo 2 against the will of the heavens)
as when Anya goes Anya "Strange that you say that the Worldstone must be destroyed. The prophecies said nothing about that. Perhaps all we have fought for will be lost…or perhaps we'll never need fight again!"
There was no plan to destroy the Worldstone, so Tyrael could be an interloper trying to cause an invasion of sanctuary
I dont think diablo will be in the game its going to feature the last 2 prime evils imo
lol what
mephisto and baal?
ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
also Tyrael: "Diablo and Mephisto have been banished back into the Black Abyss that spawned them and the corrupted Soulstones are no more." (In-game dialogue) they are simply back where they started, and perhaps the 2 demons trying to start the invasion of sanctuary are bringing them back too
If you don't mind I'm going to pull a page out of Harry Potter. You might be thinking "LOL HARRY POTTER ROFLROFLLMAO," but I still think it's relevant so deal with it. In the Harry Potter universe when Voldemort was almost indestructible because he had split up his soul into multiple objects. Who's to say ALL of Diablo was in that soul stone? I know, I know it's a far fectched idea, but I wouldn't be suprised if Blizzard explained it in a similar manner.
As for the people thinking we may need to destroy Tyrael, I just don't think blizzard would go that route. He played an important role in helping you save sanctuary I just don't see it happening.

"No one gets to heaven 'til they've lived awhile in hell and even then it's rare that you'll be going there."
IGN: For people that don't have a sense of the story of the entire Diablo franchise, can you give us a quick summary of what D3 is all about?
Jay Wilson: Yeah. Diablo 3 is an action role-playing game where you play the role of one of five heroes trying to save the world of humanity, we call it Sanctuary, from hideous demon invaders and ultimately Diablo.
Here is my guess -
in th ign interview jay said belial is in act 2. My guess is azmodan in act 3 and the. You think it's safe. But then wait... Diablo, mephisto, and Baal come back intheir twisted three headed form for act 4

Are people still in denial about Diablo being the 3-headed demon featured in the earliest CG trailer?
And did anyone bother reading the freaking manuals? The prime three could wander the mortal realm in disembodied spirit form just fine, they simply used the soulstones to anchor and focus their powers. Destroying the soulstones at the hellforge merely released their spirits back into hell, where they could later reform, but making return to sanctuary more difficult. These are the prime evils heading an eternal war, you don't just "kill" them.
I'm pretty sure the 3 headed deamon is belial simply because all the mouths on his body do not represent the lord of TERROR and rather more a lord of lies.

Just sent this to Seth. Its a link to an interview with Jay wilson.
According to him, Diablo is the main boss in D3.
Cheers,
