I was just thinking about the title system in Diablo 2. When you beat nightmare you become Slayer, then Champion, Protector... etc. Would there be similar feature in Diablo 3. If there is, would it be a lot harder to achieve those "special titles".
Archiving level 99 is simply not enough for many hardcore players out there. It would be nice if it has some crazy tasks to complete to keep unlocking titles to fulfill our bragging rights. For example, like the prestige mode in cod4, the 3 stars in the name in mario kart ds. Not everyone will have the skill to complete the task, so that when you see someone with a "special title", you know that they are truly hardcore.
I guess it would be similar to "hardcore" mode in diablo 2, but just wondering if there could be more to it in diablo 3.
I remember reading one of Jay's interviews not long after blizzcon 08 and I can remember them talking about "special" titles. Certain quests will give you a type of title added to your name... but that's all I can remember. They also say that they wanted to keep it simple and make it so that the title would actually mean something. But so far, they have not divulged much information on the topic... it could be a good question to ask though.
Well, they have said there will be achievements in D3, so maybe with these achievements will come titles. Either displayed in game or on Bnet 2.0
I know one of my favorite parts on LoTRo and Warhammer was getting some of the most obscure titles the game had to offer. It could definitely add some more replay-ability if people are trying to get some rare titles.

Yea, I too agree that there shouldn't be too much titles that it loses the meaning. (could even damage the bragging right if they don't know what it means)
But I think everyone can beat hell level, and can eventually get the ultimate title. I just hope that there is a difficulty that can go beyond that and award the crazy hardcore players. The tasks would not affect the game play or benefits anything in the end game. (could be extremely skillful to achieve that most people won't even bother)
But when we see them walking around in Diablo Realm, we would know that they are the experts.
I think some titles need to be obscure and people don't know what it means. I take pride in achieving what others can't "WHOA, how'd you get that title."

I think if they have too many different titles, they're going to be too obscure to know what they mean, and with all the titles popping up around the place no one care anymore. Aside from bragging rights, the titles in Diablo 2 also actually did have a use. They told you wether a person could go to a difficulty, and wether they were hardcore or not. Helps in teaming up with other people.
I guess there could be more titles than in Diablo 2, but how much is too much? When do they become too common and meaningless? Basically, I'm wondering where to draw the line. If every achievement added a title, it'd get a little crazy.
If you've played the game for a while, and you see someone with a title and you don't know what it means, then the title system has lost it's function.
Having said that, I think certain goals that are really out there - difficult to complete and only available on endgame - should provide you with a title. I'm talking things like getting the Annihalus and such. PvP titles wouldn't be too far out there either, but you'd have to be good to get one imo. Getting a title for every few PvP victories seems rediculous imo.
Also, something else I'm thinking is maybe when you unlock some titles they should be available to all the characters on that account, instead of just that one character?
Of course, with many different things giving you a title, you would have to be able to choose which you want to use. But that goes without saying.
Very well said !
I will love achviement as long as it's not unbelievable stupid things like drink a billion potions or die ten millions times.
I personally wouldn't care if everyone knew what my title means I have done its not like I need constant recognition for everything I have done. It's not like its exactly going to be hard look up how someone got a title either. It will be listed on the achievement or you could do a quick Google search. It is not a big deal unless your lazy.
Maybe the point of a title doesn't have to be strictly bragging rights, it can be funny, cool sounding or whatever. I do not really get the whole argument that a title should only mean this person is uber or has completed such and such difficulty level and any title that does not fall in line with that is stupid and pointless. This line of thinking seems to me to fall into the 'only the uber leet players should have such and such and fuck everyone else' line of thinking and thats bullshit as far as I am concerned.

I am a massive loser, don't let me drag you down with me.
Agreed, titles shouldn't be for stupid random shit like clicking on yourself 1000 times (via Warhammer).
They should be for badass things, like titles for how many pvp kills you have, how many monsters yoiu've killed, how many bosses you've killed, how big of an overkill (left over damage after you've killed something) you've gotten, ect.

Too many titles, some too easy to achieve, they become meaningless. Even then, the other titles are just for epeen and for kids to say "HEY LOOK AT ME I'M L33T I GOT X TITLE". Since they serve no purpose whatsoever otherwise and don't even change what you look like... I don't see the points of titles.
Titles to indicate progression though, like in D2 = nothing against it.
Ugh, completely agreed man.
Guild wars is another good example of that, some of the titles were just fucking retarded.
There was a title for spending money, for drinking beer, for dancing...
Basically they had a title for everything, and there were so many kids who would flaunt their titles like they actually meant they were good at the game.
Oh well, I guess they would be fun to get if immaturity wasn't a factor....

True, guildwars titles were ridiculoulsy hard to get, but the majority of them were still for stupid shit.
Agreed about the exploration titles though, those were actually a whole lot of fun to get.
I only ever got up to the lowest ranking of explorer (70% in game map explored, or so), couldn't get past that due to my shitty character :(.

So have his weapons.
"Breakfast Connoisseur" (my Hobbit's favorite), for eating a certain amount of breakfast-type foods
"Weird of the Worms", for killing X number of wingless dragons in a given area
"Blind Leaper", for managing to fall into several chasms in Moria (my kinship leader is a pro at this)
You also get trait buffs for completing some of these, so it's often worth the time to work for them. It would be cool to see such a system in D3.
At least I have chicken.
"Stayed a While and Listened"
Definitely sounds like an achievement. One for people who will actually stick around for the dialogue like me!
