These are all of the jobs they have to fill. Maybe this is the reason Diablo 3 is taking so long to release or even get some updates on. What do you guys think??

Well of course they'll be needing more employees, blizz is constantly growing. And I hope they'll keep growing
When the starcraft's done they'll probs transfer some personnel either onto a new project, or preferably assigned on d3. One way or another, finishing sc will lay off some pressure for them.
That does kind of seem like a lot...how many people are on the dev team anyways? This has gotta be at least a 10% increase in manpower.

My gf works at a much smaller company, and on their current project they have 120 people working on it. That includes artists and sound engineers, the whole works. You can expect more people than that working on D3.
It is mostly senior jobs so maybe they dont rly need them right now cause scince diablo is still in its testing type stages maybe they dont need them quite yet. Maybe they will get them a bit later for finishing touches or maybe they are up there cause the ones working on D3 now just want less preasure
I think they're just looking for more of senior positions to manage aspects. Most of the work is done by the regular workers. Seniors just overlook it all and make sure it's going in the direction Blizz wants.
I would say filling these roles aren't pivotal for finishing the product. That being said, I wouldn't doubt that a lot of the guys working on the game are probably swamped with more than they can handle at the moment. It's like, "we need this position filled because Dave has too much on his plate at the moment, and we can't do this until Dave finishes that. So this position will take some work from him so he can focus on that, and speed up the process."
Yeah, it's probably slowing down the development process when they can't fill all their job postings. But since they haven't said anything about a release date yet, it doesn't make any difference to us really.
We can't go, 'aw they need more people, so they might not make the July release!!'
Still, the time they take to finish a game is a bit too long.. almost 7 years of development and are barely developing content for the game?
plus, the fact that they don't reveal a lot is, imho, plain disrespect for the fanbase/community they have (which is by the way what made them what they are nowadays) - at least in alpha-development phase
Airandius, I definitely think you should go for the job. It'll good for you, and great for us to have someone who can tell us stuff :). As for the actual topic, I hope it's to speed up the process, but it's probably becuase they need to meet deadlines.
Lol. He would most definately get fired for sharing unreleased information with us.
... but it's probably becuase they need to meet deadlines.
I'm sure this is the reason. They said they're going to try for 1 major release per year. Last year was WOTLK, this year is Starcraft 2, next year is Diablo 3. D3 seems like it's still got a long way to go, so I imagine they're trying to play catchup so they can live up to that 1-title-per-year goal.
Most of the time as you begin development you don't even know exactly what it is you need, and people take on the task of multiple roles, as the project continues and people start to get a larger workload and focus more on specific aspects, then all of the sudden you might realize exactly what things you will need in particular, "Ok well now we need someone else to work solely on this. We are very familiar with this portion, we have finalized and fleshed out other things. We for certain need this."
I mean that happens frequently. If you really think about it, on a lot of projects it's hard to just fully flesh out a full force of people right from the beginning. The creativity aspect lags behind the need for work. "How is the inventory system going to work?" You can't delegate that to an employee if you don't know what they're going to be making. So then you come up with the concept, ok now you know what you need done. Now you can hire the guy to work on that portion.
Not exactly what Blizzard might be doing, but just some illumination on the subject.
Whatever the reason is the release date is a big concern to Blizzard and I know they act like they do not care when the game comes out. But Blizzard does care and way more than they let on. Blizzard is all about business and they have a great model for it. But think about it you make a game that takes 8-10 years to come out. No matter how many units you sell they have to be divided by the years to see what type of profit that game made for the company. The longer it takes the less you make plain and simple. People are not working there for free every year they do blizzcons wwi most of the time. So there is a fine line between how long you want to take to make sure you have the game done right and when it starts costing more money than it is worth.
Yes, many games, including next-gen games, are made by smaller groups/teams. I can't remember for the life of me what the game was, but I was watching a developers interview and they said their team was only 40 strong. It was for an xbox 360 game.
But anyway. Open your Diablo 2 manual. Flip to the back where the game credits are. There are, I would estimate (and not including repeats) around 150 people listed. And since then, Blizzard has grown incredibly thanks to the success of Warcraft 3 and WoW. You would assume that for Diablo 3 they would have at least as many, if not more, working on it.
Also, never forget that Blizzard has got 2 more projects not yet revealed (is 2 correct? lol =P):
- The new Blizzard MMO (which would certainly require 3D work..
- The other I can't remember where I read but I'm certain it was mentioned somewhere =D hahahaha..

This is quite correct, however Imo it very much seems like they are trying to speed up the production process. Blizzard has become a money making machine with WoW and the activison blizzard merge has left them with another audience to please, activision blizzard shareholders. Blizzard has 2 major games in production ( another unannounced one in the works or possibly production ) and obviously large rights and investments in the wow movie, all that stand to fatten the pockets of major investors.
hurdels in production can break a game, as we've seen with starcraft:ghosts and numerous other games, its getting close to a year now since the official announcement of d3 and very little new content has been shown. The hype is slowly diminishing, and we can see blizzard trying to keep people hungry with the d2 ladder reset and 1.13, new fansite policies, blizzcasts with snippets of petty information and bashiok aka Drysc's tight lipped communications.
If what theyv showed over the last year is the only material theyv deemed satisfactory, under the presumtion that blizzard would in their best interests reveal most of the content that reaches the standard, then it would appear to me that theyv reached a bloody big hurdel.
Obviously blizzard could just be hiding allot of their progress for a nice big surprise. Imo the gaming industry has shown that a steady stream of information is going to build and keep hype allot better than spontaneous releases of large information.
So there is a fine line between how long you want to take to make sure you have the game done right and when it starts costing more money than it is worth.
That is quite true, just remember Starcraft: Ghost...
And I'm so afraid D3 has the same destiny...
6 years in development, plus another 1 or 2... And they don't release a lot of new info to us, kinda makes me think if they'll really be able to release it.
When you think about it, D2 took plenty of time as well, and is full of flaws.. Just think about the Shop/Gold System (1 scepter/wand/staff early on and you're good to go for the rest of the game), Repetitive Monsters, 1-Skill-Builds, Useless Skills (Leap anyone?).. At least the action was fast paced and damn fun, and the items were plain amazing! specially Sets and Uniques, add a new flavour to the genre =D

Actually, if my memory isn't failing me yet, Blizzard stated that they have a MMO team, a RPG team, and a RTS team. Employees trained in each specific area, and wouldn't be transfered from one team to another.
In fact, (And again, if my memory isn't completely fubar'ed yet) the teams do not intercommunicate with each other, and so the Starcraft team doesn't know what's going on with the Diablo team, and vice versa.

Yes, they mentioned somewhere two unnanounced projects, and I'd imagine one would be a tie-in with either Diablo or Warcraft, as I would imagine the mmo to be in the Starcraft world, or a completely new franchise.

Again, if I remember correctly, they had alpha-stage Diablo 3 (either once or twice) and canned it, as they didn't like the way it was going, restarting from scratch. So I doubt they would can this without some very good reasons, after giving everyone all the information that they have.

It would be nice if this bunch of job openings is a "ramp-up" to get the game out faster. /wishfulthinking
