i have a question do you think now that they have life and mana orbs....that there will be weapons and armor you could get that gives you percentage of finding a health or mana orb?
for ex:
Armor of Life:
10% for monster to drop a heath globe
Armor of Mana:
10% for monster to drop a mana globe
(of course theres gonna be an item that will have both effects...)
kinda ran through my mind as i watched the wizard trailer
I believe there is a Barbarian skill which increases the chance to find health orbs. I could see it being a possible modifier on items, although I doubt it will be too powerful because we wouldn't want health and mana orbs dropping all over the place.
Its not like having 500%(outlandishly high) better chance to find mana orbs is going to be silly overpowered. That is improvement from say 10% -> 50%. In return, you have to give up whatever health/resists/defense/IAS/FCR/etc that you could otherwise have gotten from your items. Eventually you will run into a ceiling where you can't kill the enemies anymore because you rely on killing crowds to survive.
I believe we will see plenty of this; orb enhancements have already been represented by skills. And since orbs are, at the moment, the primary concern for survival, the ability to improve their effect is crucial to the production of a unique character.
It would be a good skill if soloing, or if you are the "healer" of your party online. I can already seeing it becoming an extremely reliable skill in Hardcore mode.
One question on the side though.
(If orbs are not technically "items" how long is their life span after drop? I was curious since if you greatly enhanced their drop rate but you were too busy or couldn't reach a particular orb would it disappear after X amount of time or would it stay there permanently?)
Someone enlighten me on this matter please.

I imagine it will be somewhat like how they're doing corpses now. Once you leave the screen they will disappear.

So in other words, during the period of a heated battle they would be permanent... Hmmm. Interesting.
Thanks Daemaro.

seems like the orbs were inspired by God of War, though in that game the orbs get pull by Kratos when you walk close. i'm glad blizzard is making you have to walk 'into' them to collect them, otherwise it would be easier to survive. and i'm hoping d3 is a good challenge.

well i have a question, what happens when you are fighting a boss and there are no 'crowds' around you to get orbs? Do you basicly just take it and die?

I think they've mentioned or at least brought up the idea that bosses will drop orbs as you hit them. I also remember hearing someone talking about having fountains around a boss that slowly regenerate so you have to time when you're using them.

Boss might have periodic summons that you can target to get some orbs to drop.

So far bosses seem to have mobs of things around them. In the demo when they fought King Leoric he had skeletons with him you could kill for orbs.
Ever wonder what the drop rate on a Health Potion was in Diablo II? I'm sure it was pretty damn high as well...
Specially in Act 4. I felt like there was always a lack of good drops there, the spin off being that monsters dropped pots like its going out of style. I downloaded D1 two days ago and I'm currently on Level 15 (First Level of Hell pas the Caves). And I definitely noticed that monsters in D1 were much less likely to drop pots after dying. Combine that with the lack of "special skills" that a fighter has at his disposition, makes for a really challenging game at points.
Now before you ask, yes I did go pure on him and didn't make him a fighter/wizard. He's a classic fighter so I'm basically relying on things like Defense, Life, Leech, Damage, ToHit%, Speed, and Faster Hit Recovery to stay alive. Then you take in account that D1 has alot less gear available to wear and boost these features, I really start to wish D1 had health globes.
To resume, I'm just hoping that Blizz doesn't make globes drop too often or it will go a long way into unbalancing the difficulty level of the game. However it would be understandable if they upped the drop rate for Normal mode to help the learning curve and the transition into this new system. That's why most players probably waiting to try out Nightmare and Hell mode. It's going to be crazy!

Don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet, but there aren't any "Mana Globes", just "Health Globes". Mana has wicked fast regeneration instead. Not quite as fast as Fury/Stamina/(whatever was in the gameplay demo), but there's a lot more Mana than ___ per sphere.
Edit: Well, according to that Diablo Wiki site, they're created by a specific Wizard skill, Mana Recovery, instead of dropping. I didn't know that. Wonder why there are no screens of them?

They're all in the wizard video. Dont remember if it's the official one or the one on youtube though.

It would get overpowered if you got a health globe/mana globe every 2 kills.
The health globes were implemented to prevent invincibility, not encourage it.
There is also a wizard skill that increases the find rate of mana orbs I believe. So items may not be a far stretch.
Actually it's a lot like that but instead of directly obtaining the life from lifesteal you have to pick up the orb.
