As an artist, if I am heavily influenced by davinci, i am not copying all the artists that influenced him, I am copying him. The influences can be traced as a sort of lineage, but I am still copying him.

Now, don't start with Zelda. Seriously, do NOT start with Zelda.

Don't do this but don't do the opposite either. Do the same but not the same! Woohoo!
I love you.
The adjectives make the difference clear. Negligible differences vs differences which are actually detrimental are two different things.

Plus it's a better system, and lets you hold more then you would with the "tetris" system.
Thats opinion. I like both systems, but I appreciated that diablo's tetris system was different from the majority of the games out there.

Art is one thing, I can accept that D3 took some art aspects from WoW, but game mechanics are different. It's like Edison inventing the lightbulb then someone creates it 100 years later and everyone remembers the second persons name.
Thus the big petition against what theyve done to the graphics. The new style has been greatly influenced by wow(or games that influenced wow if your prefer), as well as some of the mechanics; thus the concern.
Alright first off if this post is directed toward me, I never said style is not a big part of the game. Of course it is.
Secondly, the new style is greatly influenced by Blizzard the company sans Blizzard North. Hence Blizzard's signature art style.
What mechanics of Diablo3 the game are influenced by WoW? By mechanic I assume you don't mean gameplay mechanic... because when I watch the D3 gameplay trailer, it looks 110% like Diablo gameplay. If you are referring to the skill hot-bar and inventory system then yes they are similar, however these two thing in my opinion are welcomed additions to the game, and do not make the game play like any other game.
I think some of you are narrow minded and can't get passed the art style of the game, so you just assume, wrongly so, that it is going to play, look, and be just like WoW.
Pull your heads out of your collective asses and watch the game play trailer again, then sit down and shut-up until we hear/see more from Blizzard. If it turns out the game is full of fluffy clouds and bunnies when we get to hell, and not rivers of gore and impaled bodies, then you can chastise the damn game. But this constant fueling of speculation and nerd rage is really, really unnecessary.
well, im not worried. blizzard said themselfs. its a different engine. and with different engines comes different game looks. thats what they said about the lighting. becasue of the game engine they couldnt have the same lighting. so if it is possible with the game engine to make the shoulder pads look more realistic in size. do it. if there not able to change it. then we will just have to live with it.
once you got a engine. its hard to start over with a different one and wait another 7 years. lol ill take the shoulder pads.
my mistake, i meant interface (hotkeys and inventory) more so the mechanics. I cant of lump them together, although i guess they really arnt.
theres no nerd rage, im just disappointed that warcraft 3 and wow seems to be the style blizzards is taking for all their titles. I had been a fan of all three series, and then warcraft went downhill and seeing these influences in diablo is not pleasing. One because I find the new aesthetics displeasing and cliche, and two because I wonder what else in the game might disappoint me.
I had never questioned buying a blizzard game before wow... but with wow i became hesitant, and with the new look of diablo 3, im not expecting to like it. Ill still give it a try, as I did with wow, and as I will with SC2... but i'm not expecting to be impressed nor satisfied.
Im not expecting it to be JUST like wow... but i am expecting it to be un-impressive like wow was/is.

yes, but they're stretching the truth extremely. The light cant be done exactly the same, but it can be done to look similiar. That wasnt the goal, they decided to take diablo 3s lighting and make it appeal toward the mass of their wow market. The excuse was simply an excuse.
visually; with exception to auir, ive always found starcraft to take on a darker palette as well as utilize a much more grunge style. The old warcraft 1 and 2 had more similarities with starcraft than warcraft 3 and wow do with starcraft. Warcraft 3 was much a spit in the face of the old warcraft style as diablo 3 is to the previous two diablo titles.

I mean like the oversized shoulders, is what I was really talking about I guess.
I dunno there's just something that feels very similar about these two screen shots.

Well I like the new art style, I'm sorry Blizzard spit in your face :(. BTW Starcraft2 has a pretty bright and colorful pallet.
Note that Warcraft1,2 and Starcraft looked similar because they used similar engines and were 2D with Starcraft having a larger color pallet.
OH GOD NO NOT THE BAD COLOR! not the bad painterly art style! I want some gears of war in my diablo!!! NOOOOO!!! I CAN'T TAKE IT!! I DON'T WANT DA COLORZ!
You mean the UI? Because yes, the UI are the same.
Well not the UI, most RTS games have the same UI, I think it's the colors. While some of the Starcraft ones are darker, some seem like the exact same color in both pictures.
Can't really compare those 2 since one is WC3 and the other (by the looks of it) is SC mod for WC3...
Uhh no that one is starcraft.
Edit: LOL My mistake, that IS a mod of Warcraft 3... Wow... I guess it has been way too long since I played Starcraft...

Erm... Okay. I guess it's just you then. I find it myself that those two screenshots don't even look remotely alike. Don't know what "feels similar" either other than the fact they are both RTS, basically uses the same UI and are from a top-down view.
original warcrafts used more neutrals and shades than warcraft 3, starcraft used more neutrals and shades than warcraft 3, wacraft 3 used alot more vivd colors, less shades and neutrals and more tints giving it a very different look from the previous blizzard titles.
lol, its not a mod, that original screen shot is starcaft, its just a screenshot of auir... which is bright and more vivid a tileset XD

they Can implement a better lightining, they just dont want to. becouse they want you to be able to see everything on the screen in a nano second, but also becouse it would be heavy on old machines (and thats a good reason)
engines can be improved just as well as the game
and shoulder pad size is also a choice, an artistic choice, which imo doesnt fit at all in diablo
but they think its awesome1337nesscoolzor

Well obviously they don't LOOK alike. Ones 3D ones 2D, it just has something about it that seems similar.
It's called the same artistic director and the same company.
