IMO, diablo PvP can really come into its own if implemented properly, aft fixing up some thorny issues:
1) PvP was a fun part of D2, but no dedicated pvp 'mode' or mechanics to facilitate pvp. also since games were limited to 8ppl, it really cuts down on PvP opportunities, and D3 seems to limited to 8ppl max games too
2) Too much hacks&dupes!
3) No incentive for killing
Now, look at the Ureh wallpaper. Its not diifficult to picture roman colosseum type arenas inside. Imo, PvP would ideally:
a) Let you browse through all the people currently in pvp mode, so you can issue challenges. Maybe even a 'quick matchup' option like war3 to auto find a similar level opponent.
allow 2v2~5v5 matches. yes its WoW, but i aint throwing away an idea i like jus coz wow hijacked it
c) like trading in D2, can place wagers in form of gold/items. maybe even allow spectator wagering as well. exp gain based on lvl diff, but not aft 5 kills of same char - to prevent abuse
d) make specific PvP arena maps, like how u get deathmatch maps in FPS. Some with obstacles, some with ladders, some with random mobs thrown in to mix things up
e) you can check opponents' gear&stats before agreeing on combat. this's controversial..but at least if u suspect hacked stats&duped items u can pull out (btw how does WoW prevent duping? Dont think its as rife as D2)

I like the idea, but I don't like the idea of checking items RIGHT before a match. You'll have people backing out just because someone has a better set of items.
Besides they said that Diablo will have a armory similar to WoW's where you can check someones items and probably skills/stats also.
I really hope they don't make pvp concented, I very much prefered the forced hostilities, it fit the games all perfectly, people did not like it...but we all have to come to realize that it was a necessary evil.
Group PVP will be pointless if they truely stick with that 5 player limit (Worst choice they've made so far)
I am for group action unless they try to take away the danger that forced hostilities had. I'm probably the only one that feels that way though. I personally hated the forced hostlities in the moment but in the long run they gave the game spunk to me.
It would not make much sense for the citizens of a desperate society, under attack by the forces of hell, with a sense of dread and gloom wherever you look, to be pitting their heros against eachother in a display gory entertainment. Ancient Rome was a prosperous state, and the sense of security amongst the people allowed them to focus their attention to entertainment and look down upon strong warriors, seeing them as nothing but slaves to feed their bloodlust.
I think that having a dueling arena in D3 would contrast the storyline too much, and I really think that the developers will not put that in.

Erm... but you think the heroes killing each other for amusement somehow makes more sense?
Heroes that wish above all else to save Sanctuary?

You are not the only one that feels that way. I have been saying for a long time now that there are unpleasant aspects of the game that contributed to it's longevity. Nobody likes seeing their character die... it is indeed unfun. But how fun would the game be without the risk of dying? People often don't realize why Blizzard intentionally added so many contraversial features such as PK. They knew what they were doing and that's why 8 years later there are still so many people playing D2.

Agreed. Though what you say would only apply to games like WoW where you can encounter masses of diff people. with forced hostilities in a 8-ppl - nay 5-ppl game, the best u can pray for is waitin hrs for 1 or 2 ppl to find ur game, come in (losing element of surprise since u can c when they enter), ravish u or vice versa. And unless ur willing to go game-hopping just to find prey, u'd prety much fight the same ppl over&over again...and as u said no team PvP
Regular game content is designed with co-op play in mind, with nothing to facilitate PvP (i.e. make it interesting, organized, easy 2 find opponents). A proper PvP area should have no max player cap (allowing team PvP) ,ranking ladders, 'fun' DM maps/rooms, etc. IMO it'd make PvP games a much stronger aspect of D3 - par with MF & exp runs - as opposed to just a side dish
(BTW, if u really need to rationalize PvP with storyline...heros engage in arena to hone skills against one another, gain much needed loot/gold, for R&R - who's to say what career demon-slaying machines do for fun?? XD)

And how would pvp in D3 relate to the actual storyline?
The original post talks about having a dueling arena in Ureh for the heros to battle to the death. I'm saying that would make no sense for the storyline.

Hmm I think PVP was an insanely important function of D2 and definitely needs to be a big part in D3. The only thing they need to fix was the groups of people that ran around with duped/hacked items slaying everyone. This needs to be worked on and monitored very closely to ensure no dupes/hacks leak into D3.
I quite like the idea of being able to bet on an outcome of a fight. It would be great to have an NPC that stands at the town gate or "PVP area" that accepts bets but there is a flaw with this. What would stop two friends fighting, deliberately letting one win, and having a third friend betting all sorts of gold/items on the pre-known winner?
I have a few ideas as below:
1) To stop PK and ganking, it would be great to flag yourself as PVP active as opposed to being able to select an opponent yourself like in D2. When flagged as PVP active, you can only attack or be attacked by other players with the same PVP status. 2) If you use a mercenary in battle when fighting against another hero and you die, it should cost you no gold to revive your mercenary. 3) When you “save and exit” the game on battle.net, it should start a countdown from 10…9…8… etc… to stop players simply leaving when they about to die in PVP or vs monsters. 4) Have a PVP ranking system that can be seen by all players in both chat room and in-game. 5) While in the battle.net chat room, have a button to find you a “1v1 PVP fight”. It should then search for an opponent similar in level and rank to you who is also searching and once found and will teleport both players into a special 2 person game with no chat functions. The game should be simply a random, purpose built sealed arena and when one player dies, the game is over, ranks are adjusted and both players are returned to the battle.net chat room. There could also perhaps be an option to search for random 2v2 or FFA games where it randomly selects 3 players of similar rank/level?

I like the ideas, but I know there will be some fans of PKing who will hate suggestion 1.
I always found it silly when you died, no matter where you are your mercenary dies also. Even if he was at full HP.
pvp in d2 is perfect... go in game.... host who u want to... kill or be killed... its how pvp should be... if u join a duel game.... u should duel... if i host u u shouldnt have the choice of dueling me or not... either sack up or s/e
Hmmm, I must say I was hoping my idea would draw some more positivness heheh

Perhaps to keep everyone happy, the host of the game could tick a box saying "PVP enabled". Players who join can clearly see whether or not it is a PVP enabled game?
I quite liked the old D2 PVP system also, but was very annoying when you had a legimate casual party of people doing quests, you finally get 5 minutes before a major boss and some lvl 99 amazon joins the game and PKs your whole group.
To be honest tho, i'd be happy with whatever they come up with but would like to see more to it this time around.

I've loved that idea ever since it was suggested. Some people don't like it though because that means they won't be able to just enter any game and kill anyone.
I think this is something we're likely to see in D3 though.

Would be good if there were different kinds of stadia. One's that utilise the physics engine, in terms of pillars, and other destructible objects.

But the PvP in D2 did not have anything to do with the actual story line. That's the difference.
And neither would a Colosseum if it was implemented only in online play.
