So to try and get some ideas going for quests/side quests.. i thought maybe we could come together and try and figure out some innovative quests/side quests that can be done to vary the kill x monster y ammount of times... or kill x monster for z item and so on...
so i liked the whole clear the dungeon... act 1 den of evil
i think that should return
i think there should be along side the acheivements... side quests for entire acts
like zombies... there were a bunch of different zombies throughout act 1... why not have a side quest like kill x ammount of any type of zombie.. before defeating the act 1 boss
and obv the # will be rediculously high and to actually do it.. u'll prob have to grind zombies for a bit
other side quests could be like finding certain shrines where there is 1 in each area... and each shrine gives u a certain piece of item or something.. and after like 15 shrines or w/e you get a class specific item.. or a generic random item like a ring (soJ? :P) and obviously the shrines will be out of the way and you would have to go adventuring for them and randomly placed too (if their keeping the whole random map generation thing)
i think there should be really hard quests ... that most people wont actually do... like kill the act boss.. solo... before x lvl
it'd be kool to see a quest where you have to kill a mini-boss... sorrounded by gaurds... but u can't kill any of the gaurds... u can dmg them... just not kill them... and obviously the gaurds could have like slowing effects or ensnare type spells or something so u just can't run away... or u have to kill the boss first before killing the gaurds...
i definetly think though that if ur one of those people that are good at rushing through acts by yourself.... you should be awarded... so finishing an act before a certain ammount of time.. should get you something... even like a level up
i'd like to see quests give more than just exp and money and items and buffs...
i want to see quests.. such as like really hard quests... giving you a certain title.. or have ur footprints fill up with blood... more like visual stuff... and gives you recognition... like wow.. you were able to beat that quest?
i wouldn't mind seeing quests that could take up to a few hours to complete... obviously giving a huge reward at the end... but not like grind 10000000 yetis... but more like go grind everyone in the entire act... looking for specific white/grey items... that only drop off certain monsters(but u dont know which drop of what... and it should always be different).. to like combine to give you a really good item... or some kick a$$ perma-buff or stat bonus or w/e
well enough with my wall
i know this thread was probably already made... but i had some good ideas.. and thought maybe we can start fresh... and bring it together
sorry if i repeated alot of stuff of what other people said
Well the more I read what you put the more it reminded me of World of Warcraft. I do agree they should keep things like the Den of Evil. However, "kill X amount of mobs" quests should NEVER be implemented into Diablo 3. I agree that quests should be more rewarding. They could have side quests where you have to go into places you normally wouldn't. Like in D2 they had "the pit", "the cave", fake tombs, etc. Those could prove to be useful. I will never agree with grinding quests though.
like zombies... there were a bunch of different zombies throughout act 1... why not have a side quest like kill x ammount of any type of zombie.. before defeating the act 1 boss
This is not WOW. Kill x amount of y quests are boring as hell. Diablo quests are not. They are all cut a bloody path through 5 levels of a cursed tower, hack some evil witch who baths in the blood of 100 virgins, apart and take all her gold.

I'm not really up for grinding quests. I hate it when you have to kill a certain amount of monsters. Like what the hell? Why are NPC's always so specific to the exact number? And how the hell do they know how many I've killed?
I actually might enjoy a quest thats a bit like Cluedo. Try and figure out who the bad guy in town is (like Nihlathak), but if you get it wrong and kill the wrong guy, then you fail and the real bad guy gets away.
... nah, too hard and complicated.
I'd love more quests like Halls of the Blind or the Chamber of Bone (completely PACKED with skeletons). Cool little challenges like those ones from DI that come with their very own rhyme!
Or a little quest like Valor from DI too. That was cool, having to go around, flicking switches and eventually getting the treasure (Arkaine's Valor) in the middle.
Though those quests are probably the kind of things that they already plan on having in DIII. I guess thats what they mean when they say 'randomised dungeon quests' or whatever they said.
DII quests were good too, especially Izual and the Hellforge ones. And the Countess, and Anya.
I just wish I could talk to the bad guys before killing them. They are so hasty for a fight.
hmm, first of all that kind of quest wouldn't really go with the story...and those kind of quests are annoying (search and destroy X amount of 'insert bad guy here').
What i think, is if they make the first quest almost exactly like the first quest in Diablo 2 (Den of evil). It would be really cool, just imagine starting the game and you are told to go clear the den of..., tunnel of...etc. It would bring back a lot of memories, and also you could compare the games and see which is truly better 'for those complainers'.

"Not Even Death Can Save You From Me" ~ Diablo (II)
one of the reasons I couldn't stand WoW was these 'Kill x amount of monsters' quests. So this is a BIG no no for me.
Plus I don't think Achievements for the blizzard accounts will have any rewards, so that makes these quests twice as useless.
I like the idea of the post above. We know that Diablo III will be filled with random dungeons, or maybe even dungeons that appear randomly. It would be fun to have a sidequest/random quest revolving around some of those dungeons. Not just clearing them, maybe even to go get an item rumored to be in that dungeon, or a rumor is going on that a miniboss is being summoned at a certain cave and you must either stop that from happening or have to face that monster.
I think things like that could make this game super fun to play through.
For balancing reasons they can't add scenarios like: "Finish the act in X time and get a level-up" also this pushes players to skim/rush through the acts and miss all the extras which im sure Blizzard want to avoid players doing.
To be honest nearly all side quest types can be categorized to 3 main types:
-Obtain X item(s)
-Kill X monster(s)
-Find X location(s) or item(s)
Pretty much all of the quests in D2 fall into these categories, Examples... ACT 1: Slay countess (kill a monster) ACT 2: Make hordoric staff (obtain items) ACT 3: Find gidbin (obtain items) ACT 4: Smash soulstone (find location) ACT 5: Kill Baal (kill a monster)
Blizzard just seems to have a knack for making these seemingly mundane quests stereotypes into interesting tasks. EG: If you really want to generalize the countess quest in act 1, its essentially "Kill a monster", but Blizzard make it sound cool, have to search for an abandoned tower and venture down 5 levels, wade through blood and death to get to a possessed evil monster protected by guards and can loot and pillage her tower when done as a reward.
I don't even mind the quests where you kill X amounts of monsters or find X items. I quite like them as long as its not all the time.
I think some of the side quests should have different outcomes so that it goes towards achievements. Say you can pursuade a guy to stop whatever hes doing, if you fail, you have to kill him, but you lose the achievement.
Also, in order to make sure the steps to gaining the achievements are different, Blizzard could implement a system where the initial side quest changes at random. So sometimes, you need to ask X person instead of Y person, and aquire certain pieces of information that comes at random each time.
Like what Atrumentis said, you can try to catch the bad guy, but there are many more useless npcs (that just gives gossips) in D3, and the character has the bad guy randomed when he receives the side quest. So you will have a range of potential bad guys, and whichever one it is will not affect any outcome (besides losing the option to gossip).

Yes generally speaking quests fall into those basic categories. However like you said Blizzard managed to remove the hum drum mandanity of the quests in Diablo.
I do not mind a straight grindfest but I take issue when it is every second quest.
I guess the real difference is in Diablo each quest had more story to it, WOW's quests are exact formulae. Go here kill this exact number of bad guys (usually upwards of 12). Diablo was more go here kill the bad guys, but it never told you how many there were. And with the exception of the Den of Evil the number was no more than 7. The Den of Evil didn't start counting numbers till you had 5 left.
If grindfest quest doesn't feel like one, I have no problem with it. Baal's minions. What a bloody grindfest quest that was. wave after wave of minions, but I don't feel like it was a grindfest, not like kill 12 raptors in the barrens and bring their heads back.

There could also be some generic puzzle type quests that revolve around configuring some stones or something in order to solve it, or riddle/clue based quests...but the latter are one-timers, unless you resort to randomized ciphers. Both of which, actually, could be welcome to me.
umm maybe i am mis-interpreting something different between quests and side-quests...
to me side-quests are something u do for fun... an objective that u do just because u want to.. and quests u have to do .. to progress in levels/story
no one is FORCIING you to do the side quests.. and sure u can take 2 paths... u can do just the quests and move on... and be in act 3... while me on the other hand would do all the side quests as well.. and be in act 2... you'll still be the proper lvl for the act... but it's more so for the thrill of the game.. and replayability and what not...
and like the kill x ammount of any zombie... is just meant to be something u finish before finishing the act... like it'll probably mostlikely be done by the time u get to the end... but you might have to go back and kill an extra 20 cause u were short some.... or w/e
yes i realize u guys don't want the whole WoW style quests back....
this is the point of this thread... USE some creativity...
blizzard DOES look at forums.. and if they see someone come up with a great idea.. they could possibly still use it...
and who knows what you guys can think of...
another one i jsut thought of... was a race type quest... not a timer.. but an actual race...
where u have to run through a massive ammount of mobs... and get to point b... as fast as u can... and ur reward is based off of how fast u did it... this quest could even be repeatable... but obviously the repeat reward is not as a great... and i think there should be like a world record... and if u beat it.. your name is put in the quest description along with what lvl u were and class... and should be restricted to only when ur in that act... wouldnt want a max lvl char coming back to just ruin it....
so if it's in act 1 than u must be in act 1 and unable to access act 2 to be able to try and break the world record
The grinding type quest are a no-no for me. I do like the idea of having a qeust related to the random dungeons that appear, like you could talk to an NPC and he/she will tell you a rumor of an item that is hidden in the random dungeon in whatever wilderness. I also like the idea of the random dungeons having their own little back-story, like when you are running through a cave or something you find certain items or tomes that hint to something tragic or evil that may have occured in that dungeon. I think it gives the world a sense of size knowing that things have happened and are happening everywhere.
As long as the quests have a awesome storyline behind them I like them. Like the Moldy Tome you read about the Countess, or the NPCs you ask about The Butcher. I love it.
so what if you were told to go to a certain area... and you were told that there is a massive army of (insert monster... we'll use zombies in this case) coming towards the town... and you have to leave now and kill ALL the zombies... and there would be like 200 of them... and you just go on a mass killing spree... and you can't let any of the zombies reach town... or the townspeople start to dislike you or something and affects like merchant prices or what not...
i think that sounds kool
another one i just thought of... is like if u were to go to an area with a bunch of dead bodies.. and u have to find out what happened to them... because it was like the rogue encampments army.. and they never came back... and they wanted to know what happened to them... so u could go to like all the bodies to read a little description of how they died and find clues... and you go back and you have 3 choices to choose from... 1 gives a really good reward.. the other 2 does something else
there should be some online-play and single play only sidequests. For example, (online) Reaching a certain temple then getting your group into certain randomly generated formations (5 seconds remaining. Get in this formation!) that will send a signal to Tranghoul where to send a battalion of the followers of rathma. Then hold off the enemies until a 24 (or like 6 depending on the strain on systems) man group of Lvl 80 necromancer npcs show up. For singleplayer, a battle against the dreamer (maybe there's more than one, i can't remember right now) where you smash into your own character's perception of himself, slightly higher stats and same gear. I also think there should be a universal quest, a temple with virtually no monsters but tons of freaky traps (imagine walking down a hallway and diving to the side as the severed head of a demon is shot from the far door. Oh yeaaahhhh.)
there should be some online-play and single play only sidequests.
They have made it clear that they will not restrict any gameplay content to be multi or single player only. I think this is a good thing...although it was pretty damn cool summoning Uber Diablo. I hope they continue to add some secret world events like that in D3. That was pretty much the most awesome fight ever.

That was awesome, but I always wished you could do it in solo also.

I really quite like your later ideas there ZonerZ. The fight against yourself would awesome but would need to be made so that you can't just take off your weapons/gear, activate the quest so that it makes a mirror image of you, then you re-equip your weapons/gear and pwn yourself easily. Regarding the temple FULL of inventive traps, that is a brilliant idea... having nearly no monsters but heaps of damaging traps to dodge, timed traps, rooms with puzzles, stones you have to move around to gain access to other areas etc...
Brilliant, just brilliant!
