Except that the other 2 games promoted PK and yet here they are.
Those 2 games were as popular as they were because of that aspect of the game, to ignore it is to be a fool or a ignorant BEAR SAVER.
/facepalm
PKing makes up maybe 15% of the players, that's being generous. PvP makes up a much broader spectrum, and people that just want to play makes up the majority.
PKing was not promoted at all, it was PvP used and abused to the point it bacame PKing.
you know what... I think the PvP system should stay the same, what should be changed though is, when some one creates a game maybe we should have the option to restricts the level of toggling the Hostile on, like, you can make a game where no one over 5 levels above or below you can go hostile towards you. that way people who are scared of being PKed can feel safer.
First of all Bishoak or whatever his name was is a carebear. Second of all in his "post" about PK he sounded like he was talking about the hostile system in D1:
"I definitely remember running with my friends, and someone toggles it, and bam everyone is dead and your one friend is laughing. Ok, ok, good joke I guess, and then you run back and *bam*, you've toggled it to get them back. After a while everyone usually agrees to a truce because it's just a waste of time. But I also remember running with random players and losing extremely nice items because of it?"
What the hell is he talking about? His friends going hostile for fun? Losing items? Toggling hostile randomly in a group of friends? YEAAAA OKAYYYY. This guy has no clue what-so-ever. He sounds like he never even played D2 - which the hostile system was far superior.
I also don't know how much more cooperative you can get with a game like D2 or D3. You join a party. You go kill. I see lots of room for improvement there!!!! NOT!!!!
I see the light. Those damn level 12's need to stop PK'ing those poor innocent level 97's. It's just not right. *Eye roll.*
Fact is, PK is about killing. Nobody is stupid enough to pick a fight that they can't win. And if they are, then it's there own fault. But for those of us who get picked on at 12 by the 97, it's not fair nor is it right nor is it what Diablo 2 was designed for. PvP is fun, and it's part of D2, but PK is about picking on people weaker then you and getting jollies from it. Diablo 2 isn't about picking on people, and from what I understand, Diablo 3 is about cooperation, not picking on people.
Then again, that's just how I see it. maybe if I was one of the few PK'ers then I'd see it differently. See the fun of killing all those level 12's. The joy in ruining the game for everyone else. Make myself feel manly by making little kids cry that there HC character just died.
On a side note: Say you joined a game and it's your first game. You make it public, hoping to make some friends online. Is it your fault that you made it public and got killed the moment you hit level 9? (That's why the Diablo 2 world is shrinking. Scaring people away.)
Wow your wrong about that last part in your post, Diablo 2 is or was shrinking because the game is way out of date compared to so many new RPGS/FPS/MMO etc. games out there now. That arguement is full of fail, the only reason Diablo 2 player base would be shrinking is like any other game they get replaced by bigger better graphics better overall everything. If you have only been playing D2 since it came out and no other game you are either very faithful for some reason or very narrow minded.
And if anything D2 player base is growing LOL but you didn't know that right? Cause I mean you know about D3...
I guess maybe you missed the part where online sales shows Diablos Battle chast set @ #1!!! on the US PC Sales charts.
Conversely I hated being ganked by xxx levels on epic mounts that couldn't be outrun (as convenient was it was when it happened when food was ready or I was eating anyway). WoW is great fun having reached max level, joining a great guild, grouping up with mates running stealth missions into horde cities, BG groups, fighting horde raids outside instances.
In that new post, you are confusing even level PvP with high - low level sandbagging where no number of low levels can stand up VS a high level toon. Guess which one is done by most "pr0 PKERZ".

I'm fairly sure he's talking about a player coming along when you guys are downing a boss killing you guys and then taking the items.
Let me ask you this, what does PKing add to the game besides things like (it's fun, thrilling, etc etc) because that's personal opinion.
thats why I suggested adding level restrictions to the hostility part only. so anyone of any level can join the game, but only people within a set amount of levels u specify can go hostile towards you.
like a lvl 70 can join a game with a bunch of lvl 40s but wont be able to go hostile on anyone unless they are within, say, 5 levels of his (65-75) or whatever the specified level difference was when the game was created. I see that as the best compromise.
I've always held to the thought that the PKing in Diablo 2 was simply there because Blizzard North (at the time) didn't have the time, the resources, or perhaps even the 'ingenuity' to come up with a proper PvP system that would've undoubtedly required proper balancing.
Given Blizzard's current talent and their ability to deliver damn good PvP in World of Warcraft's Arenas and Battlegrounds (Alterac Valley notwithstanding), I'm fairly confident with what they're going to offer us in place of rudimentary PKing.
It adds the most important thing that any game can ever have:
Skill
Being killed by someone multiple times higher than you does not add skill. Even if it's a even level PK how does it add skill? How is skill even that important, not everyone wants to focus on PvP, and I can gain skill just as easily though PvP as I can from being PKed. Probably more from PvP because I have more of a chance to fight back and plan a strategy.
Diablo and Diablo 2 were popular in spite of that aspect. Do you honestly think anyone bought Diablo 2 just to PK?
By the same logic, both games used 16bit 2d graphics. Does that mean D3 should, too?
No, I think the game should advance. I mean that is what we are doing right?
How are we progressing with now possibly no PK in Diablo 3?
I think that it has been such a big part of the first 2 that the community wouldn't know what to do w/o it if it didn't go along in the 3rd, it's just natural.
*An Aggressive player bounds towards Sir Charles with malicious intent*
"Reginald my old chap, it seems this savage brute intends to slaughter me!"
*Reginald proceeds to console Charles*
"Do not worry Charles my friend. In this world, there is no such thing as murder or acts of aggression, only consensual engagements!"
*Charles is relieved*
In this day and age of socially accepted guilt and passive individuals who cannot stand losing their 'control' over any aspect of a game. We are then left with a cold hollow shell, one that will be filled with intolerance and a lack of game play depth. In such a world where the common individual wants nothing to be difficult and acquire personal gratification with little effort for their 'on the go' lives. No hardships while engorging their selves within the very soul of the grim and foreboding universe the developers try to create. Instead everything must be compromised in such a way that numerous aspects are skewed heavily in their favour of a more generic game play experience. While they try to vindicate their zealous position, they hide behind innuendo, oxymoron, and hyperbole. All the while alienating a sizable portion of the community.
The gaming industry is following the path of the homogeneous 'politically correct', a pathetic and dangerous venture towards restricting the freedoms of players.
Example:
Two guys duke it out in a boxing match on equal terms. The fights focus on skill, perseverance, it's fun to watch, and fun to play.
Example 2:
You're walking down the street and a guy stabs you with a knife. There was no skill involved with him shanking you, it's not fun, and you would rather see the little bastard rot in jail.

PvP is fun. PKing is archaic and stupid.
You are correct, there is no balance to PKing. I see players that PK as no different than someone using a cheat or hack to gain an advantage. I remember when Aimbot first came out, what was equally sickening was how many losers actually bragged at their "skill". PKing is for stupid little 10 year olds to act out when mommy won't let them watch the bad movie on TV. Grow up for god's sake.
I would think that anyone would be embarrassed to actually defend a lvl 90 to PK a lvl 10.

make game
set level restriction to 5 levels
...
what's the problem?

Especially since why should I have to go out of my way to do that just to avoid someone randomly killing me for no apparent reason.
It adds the most important thing that any game can ever have:
Skill
There is no solution to the problem. People want both. You have to find a middle ground.

People want both sure... about 10-15% want PKing, the rest are fine with PvP or just the game.
