How do you guys think they are going to set it up? Hopefully all the high level character classes will not end up striving for the same ultimate items.
My idea: Make the random rares be the best items.
Back in original pre-expansion Diablo 2, you would find yellow (not gold) items which had the best randomly generated stats and their amounts, like +%damage, +x cold damage, etc.
The uniques (gold) had great use as well, such as Iceblink (freeze target on hit), Tarnhelm (+1 skills, % magic find), etc. which had unusual yet very useful attributes that were never present on the rare (yellow) items of the same type.
For example a helm would never have +skills AND magic find, and no other armor had the "freeze targets on hit".
You had many randomly generated rings with +life leech, etc. but at the same time you also had unique rings like the SOJ which had +skills and others (no other rings had this)
In essence, the best items in the game, especially the weapons were still the randomly generated items. People sought these out, but there was not that cookie-cutterism which is present in games like WoW, where every one ends up getting the same arena gear via grinding honor, and what not. You didn't see people running around with the same sets of armor or weapons. Every one was unique and special, and proud of it. And when you got into a fight, you did not know what to expect.
I hope somehow, in some way, they manage to pull this off, without simply increasing the number of catalogued unique items. In my mind, one thing that truly makes Diablo special is the skillful randomization of levels and items. This added so much variety and replay value. What do you guys think?
i believe that the 'best' items should be the randomly generated ones, in this case, 'rares'
uniques should be good this time around but there should be a limit on 'how good' they can be by end game
so basically.. rares should definately be stronger at end game
possibly easier to roll good stats but harder to get it to drop?
i dunno haha
i never played pre-lod and such, so i never knew what it was to be 'unique' as you say, but it definately seems like it adds alot of value to the game because not everyone is cloned lol
i just realized i edited this post like 34732 times hah.
I think uniques, overall, should be the best like they were in LOD, but since rares have random stats, they should have a chance (maybe 10%, I dunno) to be better than uniques of the same type.
I think that rune words could help fix alot of that. Add more runes make them a tiny bit more common and make a whole bunch more runewords. With more rune words and awsome YELLOW drops, people might not be so inclined to only wear "Unique Uber Gear".
They would have to Stop duping also.... duping got retarded in D2 and D1, but I noticed it affect the economy of D2 Alot more.
OT: I just hope the dupers are as dumb as they were in D2 ... i got about 200SoJ by telling a duper Iwould help him Xfer his hacked sojs... yea right when he dropped his 500th (roughly I lost count at 300 and he kept bringing more chars) i was like "idle hands do the devils work" "TY!"
above this i think items have to occupies more than 1 space ...
i mean, what's going to be the fun when you get uniques or completing a set without looking their different appearances between the regular ones?
cocobuffs what u said about everybody using the same ultimate items cant be avoided, even rare items can repeat their "randomness", which makes ppl to want the BEST combination of "stats" possible

my english may not be as good as yours, but im sure that my portuguese is... http://xinube.mybrute.com/
I wish uniques would have the best stats but I want rares to have the potential to have better stats than a unique due to its random generation, just like in Diablo 2.
However, there has to be a trade-off... Uniques should always have more stat placements.
Before LOD uniques were mostly used at low levels since they had no lvl requirements back then. But some items were used a lot longer than others, depending on class. Like Tarnhelm on paladins, barbs.. for some extra MF and +skill. Wormskull on necro (or tarnhelm but wormskull was cool) Umes lamet was a good wand for necro and also sorcs(rares with cast rate and mana and resists were the upgrade). Also Wall of the Eyeless along with magefists were common on sorcs since with those 2 items and wand you got 3x fastest cast rate which was the amounth that people kept as minimum for static+orb build, next and last step would have been 4x (2x fast cast jewlery).
Barbarians and bowazons were imbuing like mad.. My first lance imbue was 330 omg!1(about 366 is maximum) that was so insane. Bowazons liked to gamble the cheapest leather gloves and shoes. Barbs could do this also but they kinda needed some defence as well. Most bowazons also used twichtroe all the way since the ias was important especially if u used gothic bow also goldwrap(10 ias) and 10% ias gloves was needed. Some amas used chu-ko-nu since it had some sort of fast speed (that I don't remember so well) so you didn't have to use twich at least.. so that also brought a lot of variety.
There were barbs with yellow swords, black swords, blue swords, red swords even orange swords with flee modifier Armors were dark, red, yellow etc.. different kind of armors, helmets etc.
Sorcs with blue wands, red wands, yellow wands.. studded armor, quilted armor, etc. Was nice that with classes that didn't really need the armor value and those that looked for lightweight low str requirement armors with lots of resists and hp had a lot of different armors they could use, just find one with best stats.
Lots of variations thats what I liked. I also liked the fact that if you found a rare item you really had a chance to get even better I doubt there was anyone with really the best stats. I did some brute forcing with a hero editor once and still even if I chose the best modifiers they didn't come with their absolute maximum values
I also liked the fact that you could find these good rares nearly anywhere in hell and also normal mode. I found a helmet with 3 resists (cold, fire, light) and maximum life (59) from river of flame normal skull pile..had that helmet on my sorc untill the end of Orginal D2, many people offered a lot of good stuff for it. I liked the way that you were exping all around and rares dropped and you found a lot of good items this way.
RARE items are really the UNIQUES there is no other same kind. (well dupes )
diablo 2 did the loot very well, and i hope d3 can live up to that.
IDK if we will see ALL the stuff from diablo 2 LOD in Diablo 3, such as rune words, charms, and so on...but i like the style it is right now....there are many unique items that are good, but sometimes rare can be just as good and MAYBE better. but the REALLY good unique items, that are n early impossible to find are usually the best.
Oh and some rune words are pretty good, so those balance things out too.
I'd be happy with an item system similar to diablo 2. At the moment I can't think of too many improvements to it other than somehow limit how quickly some people can MF and amass a huge stock of wealth. The only thing I didn't like about the old item system was the item inflation.

Hmm, I have never found powerful rare items, but the most overpowering were magic (blue) circlets that reduced damage. I think with the circlet -22 damage I was able to tank a bunch of mobs in the whole act V and they did 0 damage to me.
I hate the idea of cookie cutter gear setups. I really want the rares (or otherwise non-unique) to be the best.
