Getting rid of hackers from any game is the most important thing that I can think of.
In WoW, those who bot were limited to gathering gold and leveling and were usually caught within a short time frame. But in Diablo I&II botters had almost no limitations in terms of progression. You can get the best gear without ever having to actually do the labor.
In Diablo inflation level of gear is ridiculous. Even though this was not the case in the early stages of the game. And as far as duping is concerned, I was told that it was/is dealt with effectively.
I personally have a hard time thinking up of ways of how to effectively deal with botters. If there was an easy way to do so, why has Blizzard not effectively dealt with the matter?
There are many experienced, creative gamers on these forums. With that said, I wouldn't mind having these people collaborate on this issue. What are the best ways you can think of to deal with this matter as it relates specifically to the Diablo games.
I agree. I was really excited recently to get back into DII since the ladder reset recently. Unfortunatlely, I had made a huge assumption that most of the duping/botting had been dealt with in my absence. When I found that I was very wrong, it really turned me off to playing and I did not stay with it for long.
This is the only reason that I would ever want any sort of subscription fee for DIII. It looks like there is little chance of that happening, so i at least hope the new version of battle.net will at least bring down the cheating levels to most reputable MMORPGs.
mh is the only thing i dont care if they have in d3 i dont really want bots, duping is eh
There should be no maphack, because Blizzard should get on board with the gaming industry and add in-game maps like everyone else.
It's one thing to not know what the terrain looks like the first time you explore it, but once you've been through the Blood Moors 50,000 times, you should know where the heck everything is! Please, do away with random map generators and allow auto-mapping features that persist across games. Thanks in advance, Blizz!
Dupers, hackers, and botters should all have their CD keys banned from B.net, and fined $1250 US. Simple as that. No one is going to risk paying over $1000 to cheat at a fucking video game.

I'm not really sure how they could enforce a fine, they aren't technically breaking any laws. They could sue individuals in civil court, but they'd be wasting time and money there.

Or how about a permanent ban on the account... That seems like a more reasonable, and possible solution.

I don't understand why people want to cheat on games, it's just not fun that way. I believe cheaters and hackers should be temporarily banned from Battlenet, and if they persist they will be permanently banned.
It's one thing to hack or cheat and not dramatically benefit from it, but the problem with hackers in Diablo is that they can get far by hacking (in terms of progression).
That's something I would love to hear answered, what is Blizzard's plan. Taking to account how Battle net is free, and the fact that it will require a lot of man hours to crack down on hackers... How can they, or what plans do they have to actually deal with this issue.
I wish this wasn't a current issue in Diablo 1 and 2 right now. if it wasn't then I would be playing it right now.
Well the way WoW stoped dupeing on their servers was threw their coders. The made the system so that every item had its own specific code and when an item is duped it copys that code. So all of a sudden there are two 11ks02's in the world instead of one and they then delete both.
As for botting for gold and items I think it will always be their no matter what game you play. However botting isnt the much of a big deal as long as theirs an eye out for them.
So basicly Botters will always exsist. But for dupeing if they code their game right they can effectivly stop it.

Problem is that a lot of duping in D2 comes from lagging out games with multiple load-ins. Those characters with duped items would never actually cross the same game, so this wouldn't help.
I'd support perma-banning CD-Keys of accounts found hacking/duping. Do they not do this already in D2?

Ahh, never thought of that. Tricky situation, indeed.
See my main problem are botters mainly because it seems that duping is quite easy to deal with. Botting is similar to duping in the sense that there is an abnormal amount of inflation in terms of items.
Now I was trying to think of ways to either stop botting or make it incredibly hard to do.
The one thing that keeps crossing my mind is to make something that is random and extremely hard for a bot's AI to beat. As far as what that something is... I don't know, maybe a boss fight or some kind of random text generator which will pop up every time you make a new game...
what do you guys think? anything on your mind that you think can be effective?
i hated the bots that came in for about 5 seconds and posted spam, they annoyed me and caused me not to be able to get into a game>_>
though i have not doubt blizzard will improve at stopping them, we must remember that d2 is 7 years old.
