This was a pretty major part in the game i don't see any proof of its existence i apologize if its already been answered. its not really diablo to me if this aint apart of it. probly the one reason that may get me second guessing on playing d3
The attribute system was really important to me when making characters, the toons i made when starting a new account had completely different attributes then ones i made after finding a lot of gear.
For example my first hammerdin would have a lot more strength, dexterity and energy than my later ones, because after you acquire an anni, hellfire and lots of elite items, you would find you wouldnt need to boost pretty much any attribute except for vitality, this was another thing that added to the replay value of the game.
I think I'd actually prefer if there were no stat point distribution, so each class would just have its own natural progression, and players won't have to worry about not putting enough points in vitality earlier when they first enter hell difficulty, or whatever. It's the skill system that's interesting and should be controlled by player choice.

Ranger - Ranged Weapon Mastery (fire a bow or javelins like a machine gun!), Traps (MK style!), Pets (lions, tigers, and bears oh my!) - physical damage based
Demonologist - Bone Spells (Necro style!), Avatar (shapeshift into a demon!), Furies (evil spirits that hang around you, giving party bonuses) - mix of physical damage and magic

The stat point system added a lot to the replay value of the game. Every class could have many different builds, making some stats better to have than others. Taking this system out would take a lot away from the game in my opinion.
I´m not sure if it is replay value... is it not just that you were making mistakes alot and therefor you had to make new toons. The same thing goes for the old skill tree. I´m really interested in seeing how Blizzard is gonna address these two issues.

I intentionally made "mistakes" as you call them. I challeneged myself to beat the game with a daggermancer. Or a swordazon. or a potion-throwing Barbarian. I understand that most people prefer to min/max, but I enjoy the challenges of building a class "wrong" and making it work.

Exactly. Being able to build attribute points to preference allows for a larger replay value.
Do I want to use this character for PvE or PvP type of desicions.
Maybe I want to have a magic caster run around in heavy armor and a maul, which having standard attribute points that you don't get to pick yourself wouldn't happen.

A points system is a must, it is the core feature to building a successful build of a certain class. Depeding on the player and the play style he/she chooses for that specific toon.
What kind of a qustion is that? Of course it needs to be in D3. If not included it would further dilute that true Diablo experience, and reduce it to far fewer character builds than was possible in previous games.. I'm too lazy to check it out myself, but I'm sure if someone just posts some of the item pictures that were show in the gameplay trailer it'll answer the question. If points are in then the items should show requirements (ie. dex, str, level..)..

Lace me with the words of destruction and I'll explode, but supply me with the will to survive and watch the world grow.

It'll already have a ton of play value and replay value. I'm not going to replay the same class with the same exact skills just to pick different stats. However, I'm not saying that others shouldn't be able to. I think they should allow respeccing of stat points.

I hope they keep the stat points customizable, yet allow you to re-set them for a price just like skill points. I wouldn't care much if they disallowed "re-speccing", but the stat point customization I am convinced is a must, in order to give the player more control. That was one of the things missing in WoW that really bugged me, and reduced the game into a cookie-cutter fest
On a sidenote, I love how people say "Toons" ... which was what was used to refer to WoW characters
ive look at a couple of items from the gameplay video and it didnt have any spec requirements... another thing theres stamina for barb where there mana for the witch doctor the blue orbs at the bottom of the screen differ in the shade of blue

To lose that would mean they had better put something else in that completely makes up for that.
The expectation though is to totally overwhelm diablo 2
