Since items will obviously play a big roll in D3 (as they have in past Diablo games) I was curious what everyone thought should be the most elite loot.
What should the most Powerful Items in D3 be?
Put aside the possibility (inevitability) of duped items in D3 for this question.
Magical?
Rare?
Unique?
Set?
Other?
I personally liked the game best when Rares (yellows) were the most powerful items in the game.
The reason being is the stats.
With Uniques items each piece had the same exact stats (other then minor stat differences for perfect versions); the same was true for Set items.
Rare and Magical items on the other hand had random stat attributes. This allowed for a much more "unique" drop and in the end you had a much more uniquely equipped character.
Rare/Magical items (or items dropped with random stats) make it so everyone is not clones of one another. If everyone is looking for the same pieces, everyone will look the same in the end.
Well we should think Diablo3 dupe free. I bet they have some kind of better system against dupes than d2 had.
But yeah I lilked the rares better. Rares are more unique than unique No one will have the same it's like possibility 1 out of million to get exactly same.. maybe same stats but then again it can be in a different type of item. This brings a lot of variety to the items people have.
I think the class sets (if thers class sets) should be powerfull but not the best. Also runewords are just about the same thing as uniques.. just the weapon/item type differs a bit. Uniques should be those fun items where some of them could be a bit more powerfull but they should have those fun stats like health drain or such
The name unique probably comes from the early days before LOD where if you had for example a SOJ in game no other SOJ could drop in that game. That actually kept the economy a bit more balanced when it comes to uniques. Since many people in hell games had SOJS so it was hardly possible to find a drop. (alltho you were able to gamble them..)
I hope rares are as powerful as pre expansion Diablo 2... where most people were kitted in half decent uniques and really good rares.
The problem was that there wasn't exceptional or elite (class items - NM and Hell) uniques until LOD...
I would like to see a nice balance of rare, set and unique end game... and I would love to see the re implementation of crafted (orange) items... to be slightly better than rares... potentially.

"If we're actually making the game worse with no other reason than to be different from WoW, then it's a bad choice." - Jay Wilson (D3 lead designer)
Dont get me wrong, i have never made a Sorceress in Hardcore that wasn't based on Tal Rashas to begin with, but i slowly moved on to Griffons and such.
Tals is the most useful IMO, at least for Hardcore.
So it sounds like regardless what the best items are categorized under, everyone wants the best of the best to have random stat attributes. I would have to agree
It's called unique because it's supposed to be a legendary item and not because of its stats, but since Diablo is a fast-paced game it makes no sense to put a 0,00000001% drop like in a MMORPG. But still, if werent for dupes most people wouldnt even come close to have a GF, or enigma.
What you guys talking is the exact opposite of when xpack was in development, people wanted uniques to be truly unique, in response, Blizzard made uniques supapowerfull, and imo, it's fine the way it is, but yeah, rares could use a little improvement, btw..i'm almost sure i saw a purple drop in the gameplay vid, could it be that blizzard is planning to add epic/legendary/artifact to D3?
Get real, folks, the diablo you all knew is dead, a few years ago i said right here in this forum that D3 had a pretty good chance of being blizzard first bust (i was flamed to death ofc), and what you know, its not even beta and its already looking that way.
After readin..... most..... of the replies there were some pretty good ideas. I really have a lot of faith in blizzard though seeing as they have released game after game after game after game that have been top sellers/world changers to the gaming market which to me seems like we are not giving them enough credit. Sure runewords will probably still exist seeing as they are really cool and a very unique way of twisting around the game and sets are also kinda cool giving you an added incentive to search for that last piece of gear or whatnot, but I'd like to think that after two previous editions of awsomeness and completely refreshing gameplay that they would continue that streak and add something completely out of the box similar to how runewords were a good subtle suprise.
One idea could be something like weapons that lvl as you do. This is not to be taken as "Based on character level" but instead as literally your weapon gaining experience and even perhaps evolving. The weapons would likely lvl at a faster rate than the character and evolve maybe once or twice in order to unleash their true potential. Each individual lvl should also increase the power of the weapon/armor marginally.
This would not only allow you to keep old weapons instead of tossing them aside but also add another motivator to keep fighting at the high end of the game... Maybe I'll make a thread for this tomorrow and see where it ends up...

Just my thought.
.
That item then becomes duped over and over [I know you said to rule this out, but as you said, It's inevitable]
Perhaps the D3 versions of Runewords will be on top though.
Take Ninja Slipper or Armageddon Fletch for example.
My mediocre attempt at making a Signature.

I hope we'll see a lot of sets though. Sets were always quite formidable items, even if low-level.
I can think of a few uses for some of the sets.
Tal Sorc - Honestly, this is only good in Hardcore where survivability is more important than speed.
IK Barb - WW only IMO, yet still sucks, my smiter has never lost to an IK barb.
Nats - No comment.
Trangs - Cheap pvm bone necro solution.
Gris Pally - FoH. Any other application is worthless.
Aldurs - USELESS
The most useful set items in the entire diablo 2 series was probably angelic jewelry.
For LLD at least.
My mediocre attempt at making a Signature.
All those sets would have been considered much more powerful and useful if duped items weren't apart of the picture.
We'll see if Blizzard can prevent it this time. And for how long..

rares on the other hand are called 'rares' for a reason =p
so given that i'd say rares should potentially be the 'strongest'
i dunno..
by the way, 11secrx7, i envy your car ;] been a fan of the fd's for a looong time =]
Thanks bro! Ya, they're awesome cars for sure!

Insert Runes in....

"everyone will be running around in the same stuff"
Exactly! That is the beauty of items with randomized stat attributes. The best shouldn't be premade.
Why are all you guys referring to D2 sets so much? Are you even sure they are going to bring those sets over to the D3 item list?
