So I'm not sure how many hardcore fans are out there for D3 but i was on this site everyday for years before D3 even came out, since the first day it was leaked. Have watched D3 go through many changes from release till now. First off D3 was a thousand times harder at the very start, there wasn't 10 levels to torment, there was 1. And it was hard as fuck. and you constantly ran out of gold for everything you needed and no matter how much you stacked GF and farmed you'd always run out even just having 1 char, let alone 4-5. Now torment has 10 levels, and level 10 is about 1/8th the difficulty of the first torment was. And now with gold i was able to farm a billion gold on my main in less than a week and that was before i even reached torment V because of alts, let alone 10. Even with the cube and dozens of crafting for every single class, i still never get close to even being low on gold, let alone any fear of it running out. So not only is gold not tradeable, its completely pointless. And now the only thing left to do for the endgame is try to see how high you can get on Grifts like you're playing some atari game. This is obviously just me whining and moaning but i figured i wasn't the only one upset with the significant nerfing of the main elements of the game.
For gold, when you start hitting the high GRs, and you keep empowering, you WILL quickly run out of gold.
As for power, at the start, there were 2 max lvl difficulty modes - Hell, and Inferno. In addition, difficulty was divided by act, so technically there were a grand total of 8 difficulty modes, starting from Act1 Hell, going to A4 Inferno.
Also, End Game was "Grind area A over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over, until you burnout and never, EVER want to touch D3 again (Or, well, I guess there was achievement hunting). There is a reason that people say Vanilla D3 sucked balls, and RoS saved D3, because RoS actually added REAL end-game to D3.
Now, it isn't so much that the difficulty levels are easy, as much as there has been HUGE power creep since the start of D3. Remember that in D3, BiS gear WASN'T legendaries, but actually rares with the "perfect" roll. Meaning, of course, that you didn't have all these new legendaries that increase skill damage by 200%, with sets that grant +900% all damage, with weapons that further increase skill damage by +100%, with all of these stacking multiplicatively.
Lets take Vanilla Natalya's Vengeance (Known as Natalya's Solace back then). It had 5 pieces - Boots, Cloak, Ring, hand xbow, and helm. 2 piece provided 7% extra crit chance, 3 piece granted +130 dex (Which was barely equal to an extra slot worth of dex), and 4 piece granted +20 disc. Compare that to today - 7 pieces total, 2 piece gives a greatly reduced CD on Rain of Vengeance, the highest damage-per-use ability DHs got, 4 piece DOUBLES the damage on Vengeance, and 6 piece grants +60% damage reduction and +400% increased damage for 10 seconds whenever you use Rain of Vengeance.
Also note that damage on skills got a HUGE boost going into RoS - Rain of Vengeance, for instance, started out doing 700% or so weapon damage. Cluster Arrow only did 200% weapon damage with 100% weapon damage explosions. Grenades did 95% weapon damage per explosion, and not a single primary skill for ANY class did more then 150% weapon damage per hit (At that was for the single target, high-damage runes!)
So, not only has the power of gear GREATLY increased since the days of Vanilla D3, the damage of skills themselves has been doubled across the board, with significantly bigger increases in some cases. Overall, though, anyone who wants Vanilla D3 back is insane, as the game is currently in a much, much, MUCH better place all-around. Can it be improved? Yes, but going back to Vanilla D3 is NOT improvement.
back to the original inferno (not talking about MP10 inferno as it didn't exist back then) you we're lucky if you could possibly take a character at around 300k damage and IF you did manage to get that far, you had close to 0 toughness whatsoever and would be one shotted by anything :\
you either managed to get damage, OR had some defense, it was impossible to have both at the same time ( and yes I beated inferno pre-nerf with a DH)
once they changed a bit the loot (and added up to mp10) the game had already changed quite a bit and now you we're able to get damage and a bit of toughness :\ with RoS, thing chnged quite a whole lot more
Totally agree! I like D3 much, much, much more than before in vanilla. Its more fun, and gets better and better with every new season, so blizz just keep up the good work. Im usually playing 150-250 hours / seasons with D3, and thats more than enough for me! Yes i liked vanilla too, beated it on inferno, but i have to admit, that it improved so much in a good way, that i never ever want to go back to vanilla.

That you do X more dps now compared to pre ROS, has nothing to do with the amount of useless difficulties currently present.
With all the new gear, and over the top set bonuses, we're limited to use those few attacks where we can stack these set bonuses / special legendaries.
Just that you had to gear up properly before you was able to farm the best gear made the gearing process longer.
And that part is what most people seem to find the most fun and rewarding overall.
The power creep from one season to another is getting a bit out of hand. Just go look at your "records" from past seasons and see how the highest Grift is spiking like mad. What used to be super tough a couple of seasons ago can be completed in a matter of a couple of hours from when a new reason is released.
ya my top 80 hardcore condemn sader in season 2 had level 40 gems and those took me FOREVER to get to that level. now 40 gems are like...less than an hour of playtime each. pretty ridiculous.
