I’ve been reading several posts lately of people saying that possible new features in Diablo3, respecification (respec) in particular, would reduce the uniqueness of characters since they would all be able to have the same skills at anytime thus making players only have one character per class instead of having several specialized characters, which would in the end reduce greatly the replay value of the game.
I think we could solve this problem while making the game more fun by improving the way we learn skills in Diablo3. Personally, I have always thought that learning skills was a bit dull in Diablo2 since you just learned new skills out of thin air by gaining a new level.
Of course we wouldn’t want a skill system like WoW where you just buy your spells from a NPC with the gold you made.
SO, WHAT’S THE IDEA?
Here’s my suggestion, what if we brought back the book system from Diablo 1.
Wait, before becoming crazy just hear me out.
Basically you would still have the tree skill system from D2, but to learn a new skill instead of spending skill points you would need to use a class specific item such as a book for a mage, some sort of magical stone for the Barbarian or enchanted potion for the Witch Doctor.
IMPORTANT POINTS
You could only use one book per level and there would be a minimum level requirement for higher abilities in the tree.
Those items could be dropped by monsters or found in bookshelves, chests, etc.
The highest level of spell would be of course less common, maybe as rare as unique items or maybe less.
Some of them could be sold by NPCs but not for the higher level of skills.
They could also be acquired via quests or class specific quests, perhaps even as a bonus point.
One problem I see in particular with this system is that players will probably get annoyed by waiting after a book just for prerequisites (prereqs). I think we could solve this problem by reducing the number of prereqs (and by that I simply mean that putting one point in a spell would unlock more skills.), and/or making most of them at least accessible via NPCs or quests as I have already said above.
Another solution could be to simply drop the prereqs but since lesser skills seem more vital in D3 it may not be do much good.
Moreover, I think it would be interesting to keep the synergy system and/or to make as much skill combos such as locust swarms + mongrel as possible.
ADVANTAGES
A first benefit of such a system would be to make everyone’s experience of the game more unique and more interesting. It would make maxing up skills a lot more difficult and thus more rewarding than in D2. Moreover, by making some of the skills drop only in specific areas and difficulties, it would encourage people in starting over with a new character so that you would find different spells than with your previous one and/or to collect books for some future purpose. Eventually every character you make will turn out to be unique in the long term depending on what kind of books you found all this only adding to the replay value of the game.
Another advantage would be to make respecs a handy tool for experienced player and not just a noobproof tool. At the beginning you could decide to put more points in weaker spells to help you go further in the game faster, and then later when you get all the books you need for the type of character you wanted you could reset your skills and place your points in more powerful abilities.
Furthermore, it is obvious that this new system would give a boost to Diablo 3 trading economy. You can already see players trading books they don’t need for other books or for other items. As I said earlier with the new enemy system, many lesser skills have seemed to gain a lot of importance in term of survival, which would make the most common books still worth something.
A final gain from this system would be to deter rush. In my opinion, rush was one of the most boring thing about Diablo2. Just sitting there waiting for some lvl90 guy to do all the quests for you or kill a bunch of cows until you are high level enough for Nightmare or Hell. With the new book system you could still rush, but you will end up with a character lvl60 with very weak skills. It would make it more worth it for the players to group up instead and go through the whole act together since you would gain much more skills by exploring dungeons and killing more monsters which is again good for the gameplay aspect and replay value.
EDIT:
Okay, I see that a lot of people don't like this idea at all, I'm starting to agree with them because I'm realizing this is just too complex...
Let's take another look at this. What if you kept somewhat the same system has in D2, but that they were special abilities that you could learn only through books. Let's say something in the flavor of town portal, identify or some sort of class specific ability like a stronger version of Frozen orb or meteor.
The main idea here would be to make the player stronger through a new type of drop.
You already have runewords and items, why not having unique abilities?
Sorry for the biased poll it was my first time

I don't agree but I want something new
I don't agree and stick with D2 plz.
I don't like the idea, npc should never sell skills. Skills farming is not good because people with more money will end up buying skills and getting stronger, then getting rare books then richer and etc. Not good IMO.

I don't care how many times someone says this, I'm never going to agree with them. I'm sure there's been a TONNE of players who after playing through the game as one character (no matter what spec they were) only kept that 1 class and made a different one. Those who screwed up their spec, or didn't like probably didn't even revisit the class because it was too tedious to go through it all again. Not everyone is hardcore and loves to have 3 different types of Zons and such.
And the rest of the ideas, I'm not such a fan of. I don't see it adding much to the game, only replacing one hassle with another.
Ouch, shut down. I voted no, like everyone else, because this is just over complicating the system that we already have with no real benefits. I think that they should keep the skill system the same. Out of all the skill-system games I've played, Diablo 2 has the best. If blizz does allow respecs it should only be up until a certain character lvl, say 10 or 20.

Actully is a nice idea, I think that it needs a little bit of development (on the books thing side). but it has some potential.
Maybe beeing able to respec only the last 1 or two skill points its a good idea. sometimes I just say "Damn!!!, that wasnt the correct skill", or It could just help at the beggining with skill testing.

Ask Andulien, he's the guy who got over 300 posts in two days. I guess rumors have just been crazy over the past few weeks, and D3 announcement only made things crazier.
it would be awsome if they got rid of the rushes, for me at least
i think there should be a reward for people that complete all quests (the main quests since there will be class specified quests and other lesser ones) before proceeding to the next act. it could be 1 skill point and or 5 stat points
at least for me, its part of the game collecting the heart, brain and eye
it would encourage cooperative play with people with close levels
What? That's nothing like Wow... Except for the fact WoW had like a few books that gave skils to classes for people who could complete a dungeon.. but then became trainable in the expansion anyways.

And the idea is bad. Why complicate a system that works with muddled requirements?
