I'd prefer names controlled by Blizzard. I'd sacrifice my freedom of choice for not seeing "ew34Kalep_SICKOboob". Totally destroys any atmosphere whatsoever.
I'd go with blocking off numbers, symbols, and special characters aka underscores + forced capitalization.
In the worst case scenario they'll restrict curse/nacist names aka Hitler. I don't imagine Blizzard putting any restriction on Diablo III in terms of names.
i think d2s naming system works fine for the most part. i deffinately do not want to be stuck with lame ass fantasy names, those are fine for some people but i wouldnt be able to ever enjoy my character. funny names that clever people come up with make it just that much more fun. i mean, a profanity/offensive filter is fine, no numbers.. a space and maybe - or _
ps.. to whoever said the "xxbigboobs" or w.e names make them feel like they are playing with children... names like those, most likely are children, its a game not everyone is gonna be adults playing. ya they are stupid and childish but that just shows peoples maturity level when it comes to stuff like that. however... i would crack up if i saw Big Dick Willy in my game.
Yunno, saying Big Dick Willy reminded me of something I thought of earlier, If you ever meet a guy named Richard Groper, It would be funny because his nickname would be Dick Groper.

Wait.. big boobs = stupid and childish, big dick = hilarious?
I think that special characters and numbers should be out. I don't mind words or fake words. Basically it should be anything recognizable and easily typeable. basically for chat and such. Of course it may not matter if Blizard can get some sort of friends list type thing. It seems like I've played with hundreds of awesome people then never seen them again cause I can't find them.

The ability to use L as an I and vice versa in the font used online always threw me off and I'd not be talking to the right person. Same thing with 0 and o in account names.
Hmm, about that lately games have been hiding account names from public view so that only other people can get to see your character name. I wonder how that will play out.

I think that special characters and numbers should be out.
With the exception of the ' character. Mae'var and Gul'dan are cool names. Underscore and hyphen should be out though, and yes numbers should be out too.
But really special characters are not my real problem, as I like a name like Abm Al-Hazir, so maybe hyphen should be in, but not underscore, give me SPACE goddamn it!!, my problem it the complete stupid names like 'bigboobs' and 'hotsorcforyou' or xXx[insert crappy name here}xXx
I die a little inside when I see names like that. I really do. If this what society has come to? With the appendix in LOTR which I am sure many of you have read giving you several techniques from making cool names I really don't see why it is so hard to some up with a name like Wulfdain. I guess sexxysin is just easier.
I will be unoriginal and rip of the name of a character from a book or movie before I name my character something stupid like that.

oath of chaos... u sir... are an idiot... no censorship in america? if we fuckin saw what really went on in the war in iraq even 1/10 of what went on... bush would have been assassinated or impeached or both (not necessarily in that order)... i for one would have already killed cheney lulz...
You really should be careful what you say online because this stuff can be traced. In case you don't remember, or in case you aren't old enough to remember, during the wake of 9/11 the Writ of Habeus Corpus was suspended with a promissory from our good congress that it would have no effect on US citizens. Don't count on that. Suspended is suspended and they can do what they please now - especially since it is still suspended after more than six years. The suspension of the Writ of Habeus Corpus places the US constitution in a very precarious position.
Our honored forefathers placed an article in the constitution that allowed for its suspension in the event of an invasion, rebellion, or if in the interest of public safety. I can see 9/11 as an attack, but not as either of the aforementioned. They suspended it in order to free their hands so they could do whatever they wanted, however they wanted to do it. If it were truly suspended in the interest of public safety, internal security would have gone through a much more strenuous overhaul - this is where the National Guard is supposed to come in handy. The regular army would have a much larger presence in the middle east instead of relying on National Guard and Reserve recruits. I'm a veteran. I spent my time in the army in the European theater during the last years of the Cold Wars between the US and Russia, and during the terrorist antics of the Bader-Meinhof gang (you might know them as the Red Army Faction). Our government does what it wants regardless of consequence. A case in point is that torturing POWs is a direct violation of the treaties our nation is bound to through its membership in the United Nations. They don't give a shit.
If you ever stopped for half a second to think about it, part of the reason for the lack of media coverage on the war in the middle east may also have to do with corporate ties such as between media companies and major energy corporations. You can get media coverage on the war in Iraq, in English, by watching the news coming from countries like England and Australia if you wanted to see it so desperately.
The main point is that FBI software constantly searches the internet for keywords and flags them for further investigation. That is also not supposed to have an effect on US citizens, but I wouldn't count on that one either.
It's positively amazing what the computer you can put on your desk at home can do. I worked for the government most of my working life and I can tell you that the computers they use can make a state-of-the-art home computer look like a TRS-80. The FBI has more than 50 field offices and several hundred smaller offices scattered across the US. One supercomputer running in each field office (this is not a fact - just an example), and one minicomputer running at each of the several hundred smaller locations (you probably own a microcomputer), and they've got a search engine like nothing you could ever imagine.
You should really use your brain instead of your emotions...
I got so wound up I forgot why I was here. Oh yeah! Names...
I tend to swear like a sailor sometimes when I am injured or angered. I hate the thought of restrictions more than you can imagine, but after some consideration I feel that I really don't want to play with IFuckAss on battle.net. It is just too crude. I would like to think that name restrictions weren't necessary, but that just isn't true.
I really think it should be 5-21 letters, no numbers, no offensive words, upper and lower case letters, three spaces max, and two apostrophes max. That would allow for a wide range of name selections with the option to have something like Jon'Hu Quo. I think that would give it a nice little spice.
For the love of God, I hope he doesn't respond to that because I really don't this thread closed...
As far as names, no special characters (Sorry French people), no numbers, and I'm on the fence about spaces. In WoW, it's a little too strict to force you to name your name all alphabetical, because that leads to a name crunch. After it becomes so popular, people have to create wildly outlandish names simply because most of the sensible ones are taken. Given spaces, this wouldn't be nearly as bad, and if we're given underscores I think I'd prefer spaces.

Just for the record, I support the current direction of the art style.
I'm not sure only letters leads to a name crunch. It is just that everyone wants the same over used name like Cloud, Sephiroth, Azrael, Azazel, and BigBoobs.
So either they use i as l or l as i, I forget which, or they use numbers which make it look silly.
My problem is 15 characters is not enough some times, I use so really cool names in Baldur's Gate II, which allows up to 18 characters including SPACE and apostrophe. Where are Diablo II allows up to 15 and no SPACE and no apostrophe.
Musashi Miyamoto is 16 characters, including the SPACE, so it would fit in Diablo II without it, but it looks weird having multiple names without a SPACE in between.
underscores look weird. I prefer SPACE. However hyphen is ok. Abm Al-Hazir. That name looks fine to me.

i think it would be better to have a reasonable character limit so people can just have kick ass fantasy names instead...
edit : or regular names if you don't like fantasy names... just nothing childish or offensive...

Then pick from a list, I could sacrifice some sanity for haviing to look at that name then buy the game late and have to get a name nobody wants.

I have even copied a few of those convention to the forum so you do not even have to read the book now.
